Double Thumb Bank Review...
« on: September 02, 2010, 10:22:08 PM »
Threw it tonight in sweeper, on a 35 foot THS, wood lanes.
I throw about 17mph with only 250 revs, so I get away with stronger balls on THS.  In short the Bank covered as many boards as my Big Curve, but had the back end of my Red Death.  Which to me was an impressive combination, but didn't turn out to be the ideal line for me.  What I found odd, was that as I threw my Bank, I didn't like the reaction as much I enjoyed the Pin Down demo ball I had thrown 2-3 weeks prior.  But it ended up being a line up issue, not a layout issue.  My Big Curve I stand Right foot (right handed) 30 board and throw over 13 at the arrows.  My Red Death moves me 2-4 boards right with my feet, depending on the volume of oil, using the same target at the arrows.  The Bank was able to play both of these lines, without needing any hand or speed adjustments.  This is what stood out to me most about the Bank tonight.  It was flexible enough to let me play multiple lines, without having to screw with my approach or hand.  As I searched around to get lined up, I remembered the line I was throwing with the pin down demo, and moved over to it just to give it a shot.  This is right foot on 15, throwing 8 or 9.  At this line the ball sails down the lane smoothly and picked up in the midlane, and just made a strong... 'turn' to the pocket.  'Turn' is what I'm using to describe something in between and 'Arc' and a 'Snap'.  The ball didn't make a 90 degree left turn, but it didn't make a casual corner either.  It just made a strong and pronounced move for the pocket, and continued through the pins beautifully, and gave me a lot more pin reaction than any of the previous lines I had thrown it on.  I struggled all through the first game trying to find what the ball liked, ending in a 156.  Second game I used that 15-8 line and threw 8 in a row.  I'm horrible with adjustments and my mental game is weak.  9th and 10th frame were in the pocket, but both left a weak 10, both of which I wiffed for a laughable 246 with 8 in a row and 2 opens.  I should have been paying closer attention to my ball reaction and stayed on top of my adjustments, but as stated that's one of my weak points.  Switched balls for the 3rd game and finished 4th in sweeper.  Afterwards while waiting for the calculations, i continued to try some other lines.  I found that with just a touch more finger in the ball, I could actually throw it 35 at my feet, to 15 at the arrows and still make it back to the pocket, but not strong enough to carry the 10, even in multiple tries.  So oddly enough, with no speed or hand adjustments, I was able to effectively use the ball from 30 down to 15, with only a 3-5 board difference at the arrows.  The carry was good, I got 3 strikes I didn't deserve, but again, I remember the demo Bank having exceptional carry, not just above average.  I think next week when i go back down to get my Mutant drilled, I'm going to throw them both side by side for a comparison and I'll add a reply to this.  I took some video tonight, but the video is on a broken down shot, seeing as how it was after our league, so I think I'm going to make another one tomorrow night on a pair with fresh oil.  All in all I'm still very pleased with the ball, and had it not been for failing at 10 pins I could of had a 268 on my first night, and I'm by no means a great bowler.
