Author Topic: Need help picking a ball for my Dad (Read 5642 times)

My Dad has a Breakout that he loves more than any ball ever. The problem is that it is all that he currently has. It works great for him on med/heavy house shots and most sport shots. But when he encounters short patterns or strong backends he can't control it. My question is, he is looking to only add one more ball and wants to stay with 900 global, which ball would be the best step down for these ocassions and give him a similar look as the Breakout? He is left handed a little rev dominant and likes to play 16 out to 5-8 on ths. I'm thinking a Rip it, wisdom pearl, or hybrid hook??

There are a couple of great choices for lighter/short patterns from 900 Global and there little brother company AMF. The Amf Cobra Special Edition might be the perfect ball for what your father is looking for. It has a nice strong cover and a very mild core to make it very controllable on those patterns. Also the 900 Global Hook Hybrid is a very good ball. Could be a little jumpy on shorter patterns just because of its higher flare potential and polished cover. And the last would be the 900 Global Hook Black/Green. It would be a little sooner than the hybrid but a little smoother down lane as well. These 3 balls would be awesome choices for lighter/shorter patterns and are all very affortable. The Rip-It i think would still be a little too much of a ball for those conditions and would also be hard to control.

The cobra would be smoother on the back correct? Would he drill it the same as the breakout and let the ball itself be the difference given he will only have 2 balls plus plastic?

Absolutely, the cobra is very smooth. If that is a drilling that your father really enjoys than keep it the same and let the ball manipulate the motion. I believe the break out was an asymmetric core and the cobra is a symmetric core. So the cobra could be drilled the same without worring about mass bias postion.

And yes its smooth on the backend. It only has a .017 differential. Thats what make it smooth.

thanks for the replies, but I worry bout the cover being so strong, in fact stronger than the breakout, on the cobra that it might hook too early?

Have you considered a Wisdom? S65 coverstock and symetrical core should give your dad the look he wants. I have a teammate who has one. It looks very smooth through the front end and has a nice arc on the back end. By the way my teammate is not a senior bowler and is in the category of a cranker. So I was amazed at how smooth the ball is for him.

One side note about the Wisdom(s):
The one that should be useful to him is the current Red/Silver one, which is better for slower speed bowlers. It probably has the least backend for any of the 900G balls which would be considered a step down from the Breakout. The Hooks are all stronger balls than the Wisdom and are incredible values for the money with a wide variety form pearl to solid to hybrid.

The original and older one, the Black and Gold one, is a ball that tends towards the skid/flip, which is not good for slower speed bowlers.

The folks on this forum may know but where does the LOng Shot fall in this mix ?? I have seen other bowlers use it and it looked pretty good for them but I have not used one personally..

But it's been discontinued for so long and has not been seen new for such a long time, I don't believe many people even give it a 2nd thought any more. It was a good ball but is much stronger than the Wisdom, with stronger cover and stronger core.
