New to 900 Global
« on: June 12, 2017, 07:31:36 AM »
Hey 900 Global Folks,

I'm new to Global and would love some information on this company.  Are they owned by anybody else?  Do they partner with another company?  What type of balls do they generally release?  Who designs their stuff?  etc. etc.

The reason I'm asking is that I once upon a time had a 900 Global Inception that cracked, and replaced it with a Redux.  Both balls are very different than I expected, but I've found uses for the Redux.

Any and all information would be great - especially in comparison to other companies.

Thank you!

Global is not owned by anyone else. Storm has bought into their manufacturing side so they can make more Utah balls in San Antonio. For a while there, the Storm poured Global pieces were very Storm like. Now they're getting back to a motion that isn't as skid flip as Storm, but isn't as arcy as Motiv. AMF is part and parcel 900 Global designed. Nick seifers designs the stuff.

I wasn't impressed with the look of the Redux. What kind of motions were you expecting?

Thanks for the info, Mr. Doom.

For the original Inception & Redux, I expected an arc-y shape and both pieces go much longer than I thought.

I drilled the original Inception something like 45* x 4 x 65* with a P3 hole.  This put the pin at about 5pm from my ring finger, and the PSA pretty close to my VAL.  I've used this layout a few times on pieces, and my expectation was a rolly piece for when the heads were fresh and overall heavier volumes.  What I got was a piece that didn't do squat in the fronts and saved a ton of energy for the back.  But when it flipped, forget it.  It either saw it and ripped the rack or it saw it too quick and burned up its energy.  It was over/under, even with surface (fresh 1000 pad).

Unfortunately, the entire bridge caved in on the Inception and my driller replaced it with a Redux.  I drilled this one to flare more - 50* x 5.25 x 65*.  This puts the pin at about 4pm from my middle finger, and closer to the mid-line than my original Inception, and the PSA pretty much in the middle of my thumb & VAL. There's no hole in it (yet).  This is a new layout for me, so I had no expectations of the shape.  My thought here was, "Stronger cover, but hybrid rather than solid. Also, it has a core that'll want to push a bit further.  Let's make it flare more and smooth out the shape."  What I got was a ball that seems to flare maybe 4 inches total.  It's less snappy than the original Inception, and much more continuation when it decides to flip.  The ball loves playing straighter - it's an absolute beast playing straighter.  But if I have to move in - I switch to literally anything else.  I can play in with this ball when there's some head oil and VERY dry boards at the breakpoint. I'm going to put a hole in it in hopes of making it flare a more and round out the shape.

The Inceptions were meant to be a shape very similar to the Dreams. I believe that the Inceptions have the "Storm additive" which is why they have the R after them. (Don't quote me on that) I had a Dream and have a Dream On. Both are 60*5*35, and I don't get along with my Dream. The On I love. Even with it being 4000, the ball is super angular for me at any grit. I can't use it on a house shot. Just bounces too hard. The layout you put on the original Inception is very strong, but the cover is just going to be too clean to make it the reaction you're looking for.

Now the Redux, with the lower diff, stronger cover and higher RG are going to be a different monster. It looks like it likes straighter angles. I don't like the look of it in my honest opinion.

Now another thing, and this is just me. I hate extra holes in my 900 Global Assyms. (Loved them in my Track Assyms, though!) Breaks, Banks, anything. They become very over under for me as well. I wouldn't put a hole in the Redux to make it flare more. I would use it for what it is. Strong cover that allows you to keep the ball kind of in front of you. If you're looking for a rounder shape, I would need to know what condition you are facing so I could recommend something.

Hey Doom, thanks for the insight regarding holes + Global asyms.  Now I'm hesitant to try that, since there is no reverse course there.

I originally got the Inception for one reason: sometimes I need a ball for 5-10 frames to help me turn the corner on heavier volumes.  I have a Storm Optimus solid at 1000 grit, and it's great for most heavy conditions to be honest.  But sometimes, when the pattern is longer & heavier, the Optimus solid waves at me as it floats down lane and murders that 3/6 pocket.  In a previous life, I had a *lot* of success with a Brunswick C-System 3.5 drilled similarly to these Inceptions and the ball tipped & kicked out corners. Since then, I've had a good handful of stronger solid asyms and have trouble matching up - regardless of layout.

I'm a speed dominant player with a lot of axis tilt & rotation.  I'm about 325 RPMs, something like 37* axis tilt, 70* axis rotation, and generally between 16.5-17.5 mph on the Qubica machines.  Basically, I have no problem getting a ball to push down lane and I sometimes fight very strong responses to friction due to my axis numbers.

Any and all insight would be awesome honestly - and any brand.  I just want stuff that can help me out during the first game or two during tournaments.

Well, I don't know what tournament conditions you're seeing, but if you need a strong ball to even out the pattern, try a Truth or Night Hawk Stealth. Ball down from there would be an Infrared, ball down from there would be an X. Don't have an Infrared, but my X is sneaky strong. I can use it on the fresh on my heavy long house shot as long as I keep the breakpoint somewhat in front of me. Once I start going dime dime with it, back in the bag and I'll change to a Night Hawk SE or a Drift.

Thanks Doom - I'll take a gander at these pieces.

And to clarify, I'm thinking of patterns like the older 42' version of Scorpion; most patterns with more than 27 mL of oil; USBC Open Championships Singles & Doubles patterns (from '15, '16, and definitely this year); etc.

Take a look at a Stealth. F78 is plenty strong and the core keeps things simple.
