AMF Cobra Pearl
on: September 04, 2017, 07:58:02 PM
Well I guess I just completed my urethane collection by picking up an old Cobra Pearl urethane.  Was originally going to get the Sumo (Mo rules) but decided have enough strong urethane and that I needed a weaker pearl ball.  Anybody still throw this piece?  Considering it got a remake (solid version anyway) it must have been decent back in the day.  We shall see.

It's a really pretty spare ball these days, just like my red pearl hammer is.

The color was called Gunsmoke on the Cobra pearl.

These old pearl urethane were murder back in the 28ft "short oil" era.  ;D

Technically, the remake wasn't the same thing. Strong resin cover on a low flare light bulb. Wish it would have been urethane.

I need to drill my Bull Whip SE now. Lol

Kind of what I figured but didn't want all hammers as I wanted to check out some of the other urethane from that era.  Still might get that Sumo at some point as that is more than a spare ball even these days (heard may be hardest hitting urethane ever made, Mo Pinel knows his stuff and that core is huuuge).  As for the remake yeah saw it was reactive and was like nope.  Thought about a new Purple Hammer but can't get one for $65 with free shipping like I did that gunsmoke Cobra (usually only need to plug and redrill fingers on most these balls, and this one was a single drill).  Plus old urethane holds its surface better.  Finally wanted a urethane for those conditions when everyone else is using plastic.  Old Black Hammer was still too early even with polish.

(edit: ended up picking up a Sumo too, ok that's it no more old urethane)

Just wait. Somebody will post a Phantom. Or an Axe. Or an E.U.I. Tank.

Lots of good ones out there somewhere.

Had a blue urethane Pin Breaker once. REAL good ball. Wish I had kept it now.

In one of my leagues I've been using my Ninja SE Pearl as my go to ball and I am honestly impressed. Last year I finished with a 200 average and now after 5 weeks my average is 217 and I just shot 298 with it. Impressed by how consistent it is for a pearl.

I am sure AMF has some good modern balls but what drew me to them for this thread was the urethane balls they made in the early 90s when Mo Pinel was working for them (dude behind Radical's sick hooking balls).  He put a monster core in the Sumo (thus the name) which was unheard of in those days and why it may be the hardest hitting urethane ball especially of that era.  The Cobra pearl was pearl urethane that competed with the red and blue pearl hammers back in the Faball days.  You may know this already but not everyone is as old as me and knows just how far AMF goes back (rubber ball era for example way before my time).  Old urethane is often better than new urethane in some ways (some times surprisingly strong even today and tends to hold its surface much better).

I bowl in a 70-lane, beat up, wooden lane house that hasn't been resurfaced in years.  Even my most mild reactive equipment has been over reacting this year and it's been a struggle to shoot much more than a low 600.

Out of desperation, a few weeks ago I pulled my old Sumo out of the basement and have been killing it with 700's ever it since.  I had forgotten the power, carry, and how much movement the Sumo has...the rack just explodes.  I think you're totally right about the old urethane being better than new.  I've tried newer urethane balls on these conditions, but they have been too over-under.  This thing is so smooth and consistent, and with the big core, has a decent amount of track flare.

Yep I have found I can use my Red Razor, Sumo and original Burgundy Hammer on THS even on synethics remarkably well.  That Sumo is a special ball for sure with a Mo Pinel special core.   Will say though that Visionary's new urethane is a lot more like old Faball urethane than most anything else out there (considering made in same factory by same family).  Love my Crow too but my absolute favorite ball is my Ogre Urethane.  The perfect spare/dry ball and its both beautiful and damn near indestructible.  My AMF Gunsmoke Cobra is beautiful as well and also a great spare ball.
