Couple of shoe questions
« on: May 20, 2017, 10:48:10 PM »
Question 1. What is the "best" shoe out there right now? I think I must be a slight toe dragger based on the condition of my sst8 that were on their last legs two years ago... That I am finally deciding  to replace since the traction sole fell off when I was bowling tonight.
Question 2. I have an older friend who is looking for a new set of shoes that have velcro instead of laces. Right handed. Size 9 wide. Doesn't need anything fancy like interchangeable soles. Just a step above rental house shoes. What is out there in wide shoes with velcro?

as a toe dragger myself, I like the 3G tour ultras.

my first pair, I had to replace the toe cap once in the almost 10 years I wore them before other wear/tear caused me to replace them.  I went with the Dexter SST8 and 2.5 years later the plant foot is splitting, and the Velcro is worn to the point that it wont keep the rubber sole on it.

the dexter was a good, comfortable shoe.  but just not going to hold up to my toe dragging.

There is no such thing as a  "best shoe". Shoes are very taste specific by individual, and no shoes is "the best" in every aspect (comfort, support, toe durability, etc.).

Having said this, I'm a bowling shoe junkie and I've owned most of the higher end shoes on the market. This includes the Dexters (SST5, SST6, SST8, The 9), the TPU-X (Pyramid HPX equivalent), and very briefly, the 3G Tour Ultras.

Of the shoes listed, the only one I really didn't like were the 3Gs. There is too little foot support, and while they probably have the best toe guard available, it protrudes too much for my taste. Others will jump up and down and protest this, but it just goes to show that shoes are very individual.

My favorite would be a tossup between The 9 and the TPU-X. The 9 isn't the best at any one thing, but good at just about anything you would want from a shoe. The TPU-X is pure comfort -- beating the 3G Ultras at their claim to fame. Their weakness is almost no toe protection. If you're a toe dragger, you'll probably destroy these shoes within a few months. I fixed this by having a shoe repair shop cement a piece of black leather around the toe. The mod has worked out great.

There is no substitute for trying shoes on to see what feels best. It's really no different from the process you go through to buy regular shoes.

Steven, I currently have Dexter SST 8's, the blue and white SE's. I have them in size 7.5 wide. In your experience, how do Dexter's sizes compare to the TPU X's and 3G's?

I'm size 9.5 in all the shoes I've owned. I've never had the wide size, so I can't comment on that angle.

had 2 pairs of SST8 and both got alot of use
I'm 6-3 and 275, approx 30+ games/week
so they got abused, toe was coming aprton the 1st pair of SST8, so I got another pair after 3 full seasons of 2 nights/week + plus tourn and summer league
This current pair is on season 3 as well
I just switched to the Hammer Force (by KR)
Comfortable and flawless out of the box for the 1st night I tried them last week.
The Original Dynaroos were the best I had ever owned IMO
