Finger tape
« on: December 18, 2014, 11:15:31 AM »
Lately, I have been getting a cut on my ring finger, just below the top knuckle. It use to be only if I bowled more than 8 games or so at one time. But recently, it has happened in one set (3 games). As you all know, bowling 2 leagues there isn't enough time for it to heal completely.

What finger tape do you use? I have been looking at the Vise Bio Skin. I have a roll of the Vise NT-50 tape.

If you use finger tape, how many nights do you normally get out of a roll? And how many sizes bigger do your inserts need to be?

Thank you

Is "below the top knuckle" between the first and 2nd knuckle or between the first knuckle and the end of the finger?

Between the first & second knuckle. Right below (towards palm) the knuckle that goes in the insert.

I don't know if this will help, but I used to get the skin cracking in that area a lot, until I realized that I was jamming my finger too far into the ball. Now I make sure the finger hole is tight enough so that I cannot put it in past the first knuckle. What seems to happen is the skin stretches and cracks; for me it wasn't really a cut but the skin getting dry and cracking from the stress of stretching too far.  It's an odd feeling when blood gets all over the finger hole and you lose the grip because of blood oozing from that cracked skin.  ;D It didn't hurt but the blood oozes out anyway.

I don't know if that's your problem or not, but it's worth a check. Try making sure that that finger is only in up the first knuckle and not beyond.

FYI a band-aid with Neosporin under it and on the cut/crack will help it heal MUCH quicker. Keep it on overnight.

I Have 2 large knots on both of my bowling fingers at the first knuckle/joint...and I am fine if it just my one night of league each week....but when I bowl more than 1 set per day or a set on multiple consecutive days--which usually only happens when I have done tournament type bowling, my skin would rub and hurt and sometimes the skin would break. When I go into those bowling situations where I know I am going to be bowling a lot in one day or over a few days, I will put skind protector on before I start bowling, and that has helped quite a bit, but I would still get broken skin once the games piled up.....About a year and a half ago I have come across something called Marathon liquid Skin Protectant....it can be a bit pricey depending on where you buy it from--I got it off ebay--but Since I started using that ...I put it on before I start bowling....my skin hasn't broken yet...even when bowling 9 games a day---something I could never do before I found this stuff. Me? I put it on my fingers and then I put the skin protector over that..I haven't tried it without the skin protector on over it, I am so used to putting skin protector on before I bowl tournaments----but it works for me...Marathon Liquid skin Protectant. Try That, it might work for you.

Is this a recent issue, or have you noticed this from time to time?

In the winter months, I do use hand lotion (STOP LAUGHING!!!). I had the same issue about three years ago and since the additional care, I have not had the issue. Ounce of prevention.....

just get the bio skin blue finger tape......... stuff is awesome..  i use to use vise grip tape but that stuff is blaaaaaaaaaa...

i think if you go on buddies pro shop, you can get 4 rolls and get free shipping..

i've used bio skin for years and never had a issue with it, i can no joke almost bowl all day long and have this stuff still on my fingers,,  with the vise grip stuff, once my hands started getting a bit sweaty it would start to peal off...

and as for dry skin and such, if you have a Rite Aid near by, get some liquid vitamin E, and use it just like lotion..  i have a small bottle of 28000 iu which is thick like syrup, and several of the bigger bottles which is 4000 iu, and is thinner

Thank you all for your input. I think dry skin is a part of it, but it is also caused from my inserts. Thus, I will try all methods suggested with the first being lotion. Seems to be cheapest.

For the bio skin blue finger tape, isn't that made by Vise?

For the intense dry skin that working men tend to get, try to make sure the lotion has Vitamin E and Aloe Vera. They are the most effective over-the-counter treatments for skin problems.

I've tried blue and white.  I prefer the blue as the white was a little too sticky for me.

Update: I have recently been use the Vise NT-50 protection tape and have had zero issues with my fingers splitting open. The feel is good and comfortable. The issue I am having is the size of the finger inserts. I put in larger inserts but do not think they are large enough. In your experience, how many sizes larger did you have to go when wrapping your fingers?

Thank you!

I also had the problem of occasional cracking behind the first joint due to dry skin and overbowling. A combination of lotion (applied well before bowling if possible) and either the Vise Bio-Skin blue or silver tape seems to have solved this problem for me.

I recently purchased the Vise Bio Skin Ultra - White to try out. This material does not work for me. It is too sticky and always bunches up, no matter how well it is applied. I also have trouble getting it to stay attached. I never had this issue with the Vise NT-50 yellow.

For those who have posted and use the Vise Bio-skin blue or silver, do you have similar issues to what I stated above regarding the white tape? Is it tacky like the white or smoother?

Thank you!
