Having problems w/ABS- Need Help!
« on: February 21, 2005, 05:57:33 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar to the problem I am having.

I just purchased a new pair of ABS Tour Ultras and used them for the first time last week during league.  They worked fine.  I took them down to the same center today and threw 6 games of practice.  At the beginning of the 4th game, I noticed a gummy substance building up on the heels.  In experimenting with the shoes, I have already tried all of the heels and most of the soles in different combination.

Upon inspection, ALL of the heels have this gummy substance built up on the bottom, and after sticking so badly I dumped myself on the lane, I switched to the most slippery combination of sole and heel to see if I would stick again.  Sure enough, I didn't slide one millimeter and ended up on the lane again.  It was really embarrassing.  I got one of the employees to come clean the approach after I noticed some black buildup on the approach in my slide area, and it surely came from the heels I was wearing.  A careful approach revealed that I STILL couldn't slide, and my #4 sole looks like it is 20 years old already.  It started out white, and now is mostly black, like the substance my heels were leaving on the approach.

This is extremely frustrating considering the money I spent on these shoes.  I am afraid there is no fix for this.  Has anyone had a similar problem?  How did you resolve the situation?  I really think these shoes will be great if I can solve the problem.  I will probably have to replace the #4 sole for sure, but I also don't know if the heels are salvageable.  How can I keep this gummy substance from building up on my heels and therefore the approach?  Would love to get some input from anyone with experience in this area.

Thanks for the input, guys.  I have decided that I do need to allow for a bit of a "break-in" period before I get too concerned.  As I said in a previous post, I didn't have quite the trouble the second time I used the shoes, so I imagine it will become less and less of a problem as time goes on.

Some comments on what I have read -

The heels on the ABS are higher than Dexters but quite a bit lower than Lind's classics.  There is always going to be a buildup on the front of the heel .... it's just dirt and grime .... some players (like me) need that dirt to be able to slide, the heel has to be "broken in" a bit for me to slide.

Stanski, you say that the soles are worn out, are they truly worn out (no nap left) or are they just dirty?  I use a stiff wire brush quite a bit on the ABS buckskin sole, and all that brushing does lead to the sole having to be replaced after about one season.  But if you have never scrubbed that sole, it really shouldn't wear out for many seasons.  If the sole is never cleaned or brushed, you will start to slide more and more as it gets dusty and dirty.

Saw Freak, I know literally hundreds of players with ABS and almost all are happy, if you still have problems you might want to contact Dynothane directly and see if they have any suggestions for you.  Unlike some of the monster sized companies, they are usually very willing to help you out if you contact them.  I agree that after all the $$$ you spent on the shoes they should work for you.

I can guarantee you that it is not just dust on there... The coloration of all the soles is gone except in random spots where I don't slide (on the inside part of the sole mostly). The actual material is worn out on the shoes. I do not use a brush on my shoes, before every shot i wipe my hand on my shoes to get any crap off of it, got the habit from basketball. I am just surprised that these soles would not last longer than they have.
