Regarding white textured thumb hole tapes...

I don't remember when, but sometime way back I decided I liked Master brand white textured thumb hole tape best. Trying to think back why, I kind of remember only comparing it to AMF's tape.

Recently, just to test some others, I ordered some small packs of Brunswick's and Ebonite's white textured thumb hole tape.

Surprising myself, I find them all three brands, Master, Brunswick, and Ebonite, equally good, with no discernible differences that I can tell. Makes me wonder if the original supplier to all three bowling supply companies is the same manufacturer.

Any and all comments on your experiences are welcome. I just thought I'd throw out what I have found.

I think the master tape is slightly more gritty than the others, and since i am like the only person in the world who likes texture at the back of my thumb i use that.

Pardon my ignorance, but when you say back of the thumb, are you referring to the nail side or the pad side?

If I put tape on the nail side, 1) my thumb would look like hamburger, and 2) it'd ruin my manicure

I like 1/4" white insert tape on the pad side because in winter my hands are ice cold and it helps with holding onto the ball and the thumb slug seems slicker in winter.  I've tried cutting down the 1" white tape and it's such a gunky mess even with really sharp scissors that when I discovered the insert tape I was really happy.  Now when I see it in pro shops or on Ebay, I corner the market!

I like the white tape in the front AND back.

The black stuff, besides making it tough to get the residue out without alcohol, makes it feel like the old vinyl inserts where my thumb was coming out in the backswing.

It's all a matter of personal preference.

I also like my tape at the back of the thumb. I like Master tape the white textured but I also had tried the Super Textured too because I don't like to squeeze the ball but lately I can't find any of the super textured tape no where.

Use Ebonite's 3/4" white textured in front and Magic Carpet in back on an ovaled thumb hole Switch Grip and have a couple of different sizes for large swelled thumb.  

Have used Master in the past and it did seem more gritty.

Master for me also seemed just a tad rougher/grittier while Col and Storm white tape was a little smoother.  In order of roughness...aside from gator type surfaces.

1) Master and AMF Bowlers tape
2) Brunswick and Ebonite
3) Columbia and Storm

I also use white tape on front and back of thumb but do not always recommend it for customers.  Dependent upon the bowlers skin, age and toughness, this is not always a good thing.

I feel it depends on each individual as to what their skin toughness is and it also attributes to how long they have been bowling (or worked with their hands in profession) as our skin should/will strengthen and get tougher with more use or exposure to friction.

There is no right or wrong here folks IMHO.  More so a matter of what feels good and what works for you.  Good post Charlest....

Right now (last 2 years) I do not use white tape in the back because I use Vise-Grip Hada Strips on the back of my thumb. My thumb skin is looser than average and this allows me not to use Easy SLide or baby powder on my thumb. They're so good, my thumb no longer looks like a bowler's thumb; it looks normal. I use mostly the red Hada, rarely the blue. Still need white textured in the front for sizing purposes.

I tried using smooth black tape, but I don't like it at all.  I use Ron Clifton's Magic Carpet in the back, and textured white tape, if anything, in the front.

i use tape on front and back also...3/4 works best for me...i almost oval my thumbhole with tape...about 5 pieces stacked in front and 1 on back...

Very good answer, Rick! I had been wanting to try the white tape in the back since I see a lot of people, including my coach use it. I figure, if its works for them and are successful, it will help me too. But, unlike them, I haven't been bowling that much, so the skin on my thumb is not tough enough to deal with that friction, causing me to hang up. I switched to black tape in the back, and I'm coming out the ball alot cleaner. Also I use the hada patch blue tape.

One of the biggest differences in each companies tape is the adhesive. Bowlers Tape is the best regarding residue left after the tape has been in the ball a while and is removed. It seem to leave the least amount of goo.

Hey Buck,

I have found from trial and error that there are certain thumb tapes that I can utilize with white tape on the back of thumb and certain ones I can't.  I've had more success with Vise thumb tape (TT-25 beige/tan in color) that allow me to not stick to my white tape on the back of the thumb and allow for a very clean release.  Hada patch was a little too grabby and caused more friction then desired against white tape.

Newguy is also dead on with the amount of adhesive that is used, I found that "most" black tapes are also very "gooey" when we remove them.  This is why I suggest to my customers (if possible) to place a piece a black on top of a piece of white tape and you can have a slick feel without the worries about cleaning out residue when you remove it.  

There are also different cleaners/wipes that can remove that adhesive when necessary w/o leaving any residue. Columbia had a great product but I also found acetate pads from my wife's work (hospital) that can clean and leave no trace of it.  Hope this helps explain some...
