2016 Open Championships
« on: January 24, 2016, 03:25:19 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any special room rates or hotel discounts in Reno during the 2016 open championships? If so, where do I find those or do you just call the hotel directly?

Thank you!

It's only 400 miles further from Billings to Reno than Billings to Denver.  Why would you drive 7 hours to get on a plane?  It's a couple hour flight and a couple hours between the two airports, you net about one hour saved each way.

Our very first year in Reno was at the Sands.  It was cheap.  Kinda rundown by comparison.  They've upgraded some, but not enough to make me want to stay there again.

Also, I wouldn't walk anywhere from there as you will encounter some pretty rough looking folks.  It's been scary enough picking up bracket money there and walking to my car in the parking lot...

I've had good stays at both the Peppermill and Atlantis, and both were a short drive to the stadium.  If you have a car they are easy choices.  I don't like to rely on shuttles to the stadium.  Too many bowlers with too many bags going to the same place at roughly the same time before each squad.

I've heard this before about downtown Reno. What kind of utopia do you live in that makes Downtown Reno look like such a "bad neighborhood" that the walk across the Sands parking lot is scary?

No Utopia here.  I grew up in a pretty tough area that's now gang infested.  I just had my wife with me, and kept my eyes open.

If I were wanting to rob someone in Reno, that's the place I'd hangout.  Lots of bowlers have gone there to pick up lots of cash.   The locals know what's going on between March and July.  Most are very nice people.   A very small percentage are not, as it is in any city.

You can put on your Chuck Norris boots and ask for trouble if you want.  Why don't you pitch a tent in their parking lot?

I've lived in Reno. I currently live in Stockton, CA.

If downtown Reno is a scary place for you, then you should consider a CCW.

"Chuck Norris boots"?  :o ;D

He had boots to kick butts with... ;)

Downtown Reno isn't that scary to me.  I don't want to live in CCW either.  We walk all over the general downtown area because we're usually at the El Dorado or Silver Legacy and it's convenient.

I just remember the walk from the Sands to the stadium being one to keep your head on a swivel, so to speak.  I could be wrong...

I agree! Kind of creepy. abandoned buildings and more than a few panhandlers along the way.

When was the last time you were in Reno?

2 years ago, and every single time that the tournament has been held in Reno for the last 25 years.

Then you should pay more attention to your surroundings. Reno has been through some tough times, but the last couple of years it has made a major comeback. The town is reinventing itself so as not to be dependent on the gaming industry. Almost all of the downtown has been renovated.

Milo,

You live in Stockton, Reno is like walking on the beach to you.

I always felt safer outside the Sands than inside, but I haven't been there in 5 years or so.

Reno is getting better. I totally agree with that. Hopefully, the renovations worked their way between the Eldorado and the Sands.

;D ;D  Yea, there is something to be said about that!

Honestly, Reno has improved a lot in the past couple of years. The housing crisis hit Reno/Sparks really hard and that was on top of every Indian(sorry "Native American") tribe in California opening up a casino and hurting the gaming industry.

Not that Reno doesn't have some rough areas(try the Neil Road area), but a couple homeless dudes hanging out between South Arlington and South Virginia doesn't make it a bad neighborhood.
