Help a new bowler trying to decide between balls... ?
« on: July 31, 2017, 07:19:27 PM »
Hey guys, I'm new around here and haven't bowled since I was in my 20's - 35 now.
I have never bowled on a skilled level before and generally TRY to roll straight shots, though I would like to learn to hook in the near future.
I have looked at the Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone Black Ice, Roto Grip Dare Devil, and the Motiv Venom Cobra and Shock but I'm not sure if any of these would fit what I SHOULD be using.  I definitely need some outside opinion before buying a ball due to looks and the reviews of bowlers with WAY more experience.
I have read online that a Rhino is recommended for beginners but I'm wondering if there is a step up that I could control for the moment and could possibly offer some further techniques in the future instead of simply becoming a spare and having to purchase another...
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer - it's definitely appreciated!

I assume you have shoes?  Usually recommend those before even getting a ball.  Lots of people will have opinions but if I had to pick one ball that could handle virtually any lane condition and under $100 my vote is for the Burgundy Hammer.  Its not the best ball for most conditions but one of the most versatile entry level balls and remarkably strong as well (won't jump when no oil like many balls).  Then again you may actually want to start with a plastic or weak urethane ball for your first ball because later it can become your spare ball when you buy a 2nd or more balls (spares are criminally underrated by beginners, and it hurts scores).

No shoes yet but by far an easier item for me to decide on than a ball... for the moment anyway.  I have looked at some Hammers but not that one specifically.  I'll check it out.  Thanks for your input!

No problem but you do want to think about a 2nd plastic or urethane ball (or even first) for spares if get serious.  The Burgundy even with my low rev style would be a challenge to pick up 10 pins with.  Guess you could use a house ball for a spare ball but that is not ideal (easy to learn bad habits if ball doesn't fit).

Edit:  That Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone Black Ice is a house shot killer and on my want list but not sure that is a good only ball to have.  Also fundamentals are key not ball you use.  Guarantee Chris Barnes could grab a house ball and beat the majority on here with their go to ball.

judd82,

There really is no "easy" way to approach this, other than to tell you that bowling balls have become somewhat specialized in what they are designed to do.

Even with years of experience, it is very easy to end up making the wrong assumptions about a ball, especially given that there are so many choices out there.

First, let's look at what info you've given us:
  1. You're new to the "skilled" level.
  2. You "try" to go straighter, but would like to learn to hook it eventually.
  3. You're looking to get into you're first "serious" ball, but don't want total junk either.

My first thing to ask is, do you know what weight of ball you want/need?  Not that it makes any difference, as they come in many different weights, but you need to choose a weight that is comfortable for you. Many men still use 16lb stuff, while I prefer to use 14lb stuff, but have friends who use even lighter stuff with good results.

Once you know what weight you want, and since you try to play straighter while learning to hook it, I reccommend staying away from both the high end AND the low end of the spectrum of balls out there. Usually, when you go to either end of that spectrum, you end up with something either too strong to start with, or something too weak to tell when you're doing things right.

Now, given all that, my reccommendation is this: Let's look at balls that are a KNOWN factor for being controllable, affordable, and reliable.

First one that comes to mind is the Storm HyRoad. In this modern bowling environment, balls can come and go in only months, but this ball has been around for YEARS because it has been just that good, and that irreplaceable in Storms lineup. It is NOT entry level, but it may well be the best ball they've ever made. It comes in both a hybrid (part solid/part pearl), and a total pearlized version.

Second is the Ebonite Cyclone. This ball IS considered entry level, but it is much more than it first appears to be. The core in it is very decent, and the coverstock on it was Ebonite's premium coverstock only a few years ago. I have seen it win tournaments on the professional level, and is another good choice. Lots of performance capabilities built into this one, but is one that gets overlooked by many.

Next would be the Ebonite Gamebreaker2. The concept behind this ball has been around since about 2000, and is still going strong today. They created a ball back then that just, simply put, worked. The USBC rules changed since then, so they altered the ball slightly, but the concept is still there, and the ball is still one that gives great results. It is the same coverstock as on the Cyclone, but is not pearlized like they are, and has a much better core inside that makes it a perennial favorite for many bowlers looking for control, reliability, and performance.

Along the same lines as the Gamebreaker2, is the Storm IQ Tour. The only reason I mention it behind the Gamebreaker2 is value. Storm usually commands a premium price, and the IQ Tour is more expensive, but fills virtually the same spot.

All this is just food for thought. There are a myriad of choices out there, and each one has its own merits. There really are MANY good balls out there, these were just a few that come to mind because they keep popping up in conversations about how good they are, how much people like them, and how well they perform.

From the list you have, I personally would lean toward the Venom Shock. Smooth, predictable and one of the best out there.

I would also look into getting some coaching. Ask around for good coaches in your area and maybe try to lump in some coaching with the purchase of that new ball you are looking into.

Definitely agree with this.  If you ask enough people, you will be recommended every ball available.  Find a qualified coach (which may be the hardest thing to do) and have them assess your style, ability and conditions and then recommend a ball for you.  Us internet warriors can only speculate.

Also, don't be against getting a used ball.  For a beginner, used equipment can be the best starting point.

As a beginner, looking to step up into the next level, as far as equipment goes, I would go with an entry-level ball, with a dull surface. The dull surface will give you more forgiveness with release mistakes. I really like the Boost series from 900 Global, but the Shock, Cyclone, and even a Storm Torrent would be good. Simple, readable ball reactions.

If you can get it very cheap perhaps but not sure I would ever recommend a used reactive at least from a stranger (if drilled already).  Too easy to get a dead ball and then waste $50+ on the drilling and plugging.  Urethane or plastic would be fine used.

Guys, thanks a lot for all the help.  I have thought about coaching already and I will be checking out the balls recommended here.  Luckily, one of the guys I work with bowls league/tournaments and has offered to help me.

Juggernaut, I really appreciate your time for the thorough break down.

It's cool to hear some opinions directed at my current situation rather than just random online reviews that I don't fully understand at this point.

One more important factor:

 DONT OVERTHINK THINGS.

Just get you a decent ball, and go have fun. You can get lost in the minutia pretty quick, so don't spend a lot of time on the "what ifs" and "why nots".

Just get you a ball and go have fun.

^this.  Never let bowling start feeling like a job or cause stress.  Let it be something that you look forward to.
