Slowinski Foul Line Drill

Since I want a stronger wrist position, I came across this drill.  When going to the step of cupping the wrist slightly, I feel stress in the fatty part of my hand below the base of my thumb.  Is this normal or do I need to make span corrections?  If, so what would need to be corrected?

The trick to cupping the ball is to cup the wrist while NOT squeezing the ball harder.  Try to learn how to start cupping the ball in the downswing of your approach.  Look at all the big power players like Fagan, Rash, Russell, and Mallott who throw one hand conventional.  Their wrists are not cupped in the backswing.  Cupping the ball at the start will add "muscle" to the swing and will hinder how high the ballswing can go.  Look at slow motion film of the modern release.  You will see what I am talking about.

It sounds like you are squeezing the ball. I did something similar when my thumb was a little big and it started to hurt like hell.squeezing is BAD no doubt about it.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Slowinski is an interesting read.  Very tech oriented.  On the subject of cupping the ball, he contradicts himself.  In the foul line drill, he says cup the wrist (try to cup it when your hand gets to that positiion in the swing, not before.  In another article about finger position for more revs, he says cupping is bad and can hurt the wrist.  He is a proponent of cocking un-cocking the wrist ala Fagan and Malott.  Which is correct?  The one you can learn how to do and repeat.

There are many wrist devices out there that you can "dial" the amount of cup you want.  Try one out to learn what if feels like.  Wrist devices do allow the thumb to exit the ball quicker, you might find yourself adding tape to the thumbhole to counteract the effect.

Buy a wrist support such as a Mongoose Lifter or Robby's they are designed to support the worst
Not everyone has a strong wrist as that's why they were designed

I am a proponent of wrist supports. I prefer the Mongoose. It allows me to maintain a firm wrist position without sacrificing a loose armswing. I do not use the adjustable
supports because they affect  ball span. The more "cupped" the adjustment, the greater the effect it has on shortening your span. For this reason, I had my span re- measured with the Mongoose secured to my wrist. It made a huge difference.

Thanks for the responses. I have a Robby's but don't use the cupping settings because of the effects it has on span.  Think I just need to keep my wrist in a strong position overall, but it just feels stretched.

Would a cool Max or a brace similar allow your hand to be "below the equator" as needed at release?

Robby's helped with my release when i returned to bowling after 17 years away. 12-13 years ago I used Robby's for about a year or so because I "topped" the ball and rolled like a spinner. when I was a youth bowler in 85' I wore something similar.....
