I have heard this description a few times, but have never seen what it means.

No tap is this..If you bowl and get a 9 count, that counts the same as a strike.. If you bowl a no tap tournament and you hit 9's on all 12 balls, thats a no tap 300.

Hope that explains it..

Could also be an 8 pin No Tap, meaning a count of 8 or better is scored as a strike although the most popular version is the 9 pin No Tap as explained by jkiser01.

Yeah that answers it. Now I am curious as to why would do they do this? I understand handicap but this type just seems to be try to inflate scores.

One other question so if I leave a 10 pin you don't even roll at it and they just put up a strike?

Why?  For Fun.  It allows people who normally wouldnt, the chance to run up big scores or strings of strikes.  It is usually handicapped and run as a one day or night tournament or sometimes as a fun event at the end of a league (only open to the league bowlers).  It is not sanctioned so the scores do not earn any ABC/WIBC awards.

You are correct on the 10 pin.  Leave any single pin and you dont shoot at it.  Automatic scorers can be programmed so that the score is automatically scored as a strike and the pinsetters will automatically reset the deck.

You will often see no taps or 3-6-9's (you get an auto-strike in the 3rd, 6th and 9th frames) used in pro-am's, 'cause it makes the games go faster, and everyone gets to throw a big score, maybe even beat the pro.  Whoopee...

A No Tap tournament can be sanctioned for ABC awards for a regular 300 game etc., that may take place during a No Tap. The automatic scorers show if there was a regular strike or a "No Tap".

A no-tap pro-am is one thing, a no-tap tournament is a completely different story.

Unless it was a charity benefit or something, I would quit the game before I'd bowl a no-tap tournament.  What would be the point?  You could throw 11 real strikes in a row, and lose to a guy who left 12 consecutive 5 pins.  I can just see these clowns pumping their fists in the air, like they're good or something.

If you don't like the way bowling is scored, find another game to play, or put up the bumpers and play bumper ball with the kids.  It ain't real bowling!

A low-average bowler once said something about No Tap giving him a chance to experience the pressure of trying for a 300 game.   Granted, it is not the same as the real thing, but he was saying that it gave him some pressure so that he would be able to use that as experience for the future.  Normally, he would only have a small string of 4 or 5 strikes and then get nervous, so having the opportunity to throw longer strings was helpful in his case.  As I said earlier, it is primarily for Fun.
