What is the best knee support to use while bowling
« on: February 06, 2009, 02:19:04 PM »
A few years ago i injured my knee, which happens to also be my slide leg. My knee is healed, but the stress from bowling seems to have weakened it considerably. My doctor told me to wear a knee support while bowling. I wanted some input as to which knee support out there would be best without limiting the motion of my leg or knee while bowling. Any input is appreciated.

I suspect that bowling hasn't weakened the knee. After all, it's still exercise (albeit minimal). Everyday life without regular exercise will weaken the knee, and you are just beginning to notice it due to the bowling.

Most neoprene supports will keep it warm and offer some support. But, as someone who has had a partially torn ACL since 1993, I would suggest doing some physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint.

The "heavier" the brace or support, the more limits to your range of motion. Some are actually designed to limit range of motion to decrease your chance of injury. Good luck.

i have been doing physical therapy to stregthen the muscles. i think some of the problem has to do with the fact that i also work in a glass shop and am constantly lifting and carrying heavy glass panels all day. Im thinking that maybe wearing a neoprene support while bowling and a heavier brace while working may be the solution. I went to my doctor today for advice, and he wasn't very helpful and thats why i came on here to see what other people who bowl use.

I just use an ACE bandage.  That way I can wrap it to support where I need it and with as much pressure as I need.  I think with the normal pull-up types you can either get too much or too little where with the wrap you can get it just how you need it.

I would look in to finding why you need it while bowling though.  I used to have to have my knee wrapped even if I was only throwing 3 games for league or it would be killing me the next day.  Turns out that the shoes I had didn't have enough slide to them.  I got some SST8s with the customizable soles and now I only need to wrap my knee if I bowl more than 30 or so games in a week.  That's all assuming your knee is strong enough to hold up, as notclay said.  I'm relatively young still but my knees took a beating when I was younger and strengthening them up is key to keeping up now.

Gabriel94509,

As you continue to work on the muscles, an often neglected part of any strengthening routine is stretching.
If you don't work on the range of motion through stretching, the patella (knee cap) can put a bunch of pressure on everything underneath and cause some real discomfort. Keep up the strengthening, just make sure that you view the stretching as of equal or more importance.

Sport authority sell many different braces that are good. Cost about 40 to 50 dollars. Best 1 I have found slides over knee then has 2 main straps. Very comfortable. Still have full movement.

This Air Mesh material is hands down the best breathing knee brace made, I live in Vegas where it is just plain hot. I still do not get overheated bowling like using the other neoprene braces from the sports stores like Mueller or Mc David brands.

Gabriel,

I was having a lot of pain in my slide knee as well last year.  My wife is a physical therapist, and she was able to get me one of these:

http://supportsusa.com/knee/bioskin/bio-skin_q-brace.htm

It isn't cheap (she got a big discount, being a therapist), but this is a really good support.  The material breathes easy, it is comfortable, and provides a lot of support.

Like noclay said, focus on strengthening the area around the knee.  My wife had me doing squats and lunges.  Give that a try in conjunction with a brace.  Good luck.
