DV8 describes the nightmare as a ball that “Finished with a Rough Buff Finish, the Brutal Nightmare skids easily through the front and mid-lane with an extremely quick response to friction on the backend creating a highly continuous motion that pummels the pins. The Brutal Nightmare with its new Class 8 Hybrid Reactive coverstock is the most skid / snap DV8 ball to date and should be used on medium oily to oily lane conditions.”
I have always struggled with asymmetric equipment revving up too quickly and burning up all it’s energy before it gets to the pins.  So with the Brutal Nightmare we decided to try something a little different.  We drilled it to retain as much energy as physically possible.  We decided to go with a 90* x 2.5 x 50* layout.  This would allow the Brutal Nightmare to get down the lane, and make a smoother move on the backend thus retaining as much energy as possible.
I LOVE this ball on a house shot.  It is strong enough to handle the oil in the middle but it is smooth enough not to overreact if I get in into the dry to quick.
My first night using it was on a house shot and I was pleasantly surprised with the reaction I saw.  When I would normally see a the ball rev up and burn up, the Brutal Nightmare floated through the heads and made a strong controlled move on the backed.  When I would miss out it still retained energy and made a strong move, and while in the past I would have left a plaque ten, the Brutal had plenty of energy left to carry.
I have also used the Brutal on the Earl Anthony 40’ pattern.  The Brutal gave me a great reaction look on this pattern.  While others were having trouble with their ball either struggling to handle the volume, or struggling with controlling the breakpoint, the Brutal gave me the best of both worlds.  It was strong enough to overcome the upfront volume, but did not go sideways off the friction.  And, once again, it still had energy at the pins.
While I drilled the Brutal Nightmare slightly unconventional, it does exactly what I was hoping it would.  This layout will allow me to use the Brutal on a multitude of different patterns, when I need easy length but a strong controllable motion.

I drilled my Brutal Nightmare with the pin above my middle finger and the mass bias 1 inch right of my thumb.  It works out to be a 5 1/2 pin to pap for me.  I also put an x-hole 1 inch past my pap.  I have used the ball only on house shots so far in a couple different locations.  This is the strongest ball down lane in my bag.  On a fresh house shot I am standing 3 boards left of my Nexxus!  At first the ball is almost too strong when the backends are completely clean.  Then when the carry down and transition periods hit this ball shines.  I can open up the lane and not worry about losing any of its capabilities to turn the corner.  This ball also responds well to changes in my hand position which is a huge like for me.  I can keep my hand behind the ball and not have it respond to the friction too fast.  But at the same time I can get my hand around it and create an even stronger backend reaction.  I am looking forward to using this on longer flatter patters a couple of games into a block when there is transition.  I will be able to move further left and stay inside of other bowlers allowing me to open the lane up more.  If you have any questions feel free to send me a pm and I will be glad to help.

LANE CONDITION

Length:40ft

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

COMMENTS

Layout: Pin above ring finger with the mass bias next to the thumb. Pin-PAP: 5"

Likes: One of the biggest things I was loking for with this ball was for a longer reaction compared to my Brunswick Nexxus f(p+r) drilled with the same layout, and longer reaction is exactly what I got except with more overall hook than the Nexxus. The Brutal Nightmare is very clean through the heads and midlane and stores a lot of energy for the end of the patter. Even on old wood lanes this ball stores more energy than any assymmetric ball I've thrown. This ball has great continuation off the dry and even gets through heavy carry down from urethane balls and plastic balls used in prior leagues. This ball is great on the fresh and on the burn as it retains most of its energy for the backend giving this ball a very quick response to the friction and a very continuous drive through the pins.

Dislikes: Although I love the quick response to friction, sometimes this ball can be extra skid/flip and become unpredictable. This however can be overcome with a different layout to still get the quick response but not the unpredictability.

Likes: This ball came with a cg almost on the pin so I had to go pin down, and I wanted something to compliment my nightmare drilled similarly and that is what I got. I have a ball to step down to if the nightmare gives me too much of an over under reaction when there is not enough oil. This ball picks up well in the midlane and allows me to keep my angles straighter through the front for those heavier oil longer patterns.

Dislikes: If I try to open up the angles too much it loses some cornering power and hit, thats why I drilled a second one 75 x 5 x 75 to be a little cleaner and more angular which it is.

DV8 Brutal Nightmare

REVIEW

I drilled the Brutal Nightmare  with this dual angle layout  mainly for med to med heavy oil conditions.  The ball gets through the head real clean for me .  This ball starts tro read the break point and when it does it has a strong continuous move through the pin deck where the ball goes through the 8 pin.  I can line up on 35 and play deep inside from 20-22 out to 10 and it has no problem making the move.

Most assymetic balls wobble to much for me  but the Brutal Nightmare  does not.  I can miss right and not fear that it won't make it back to the pockter.  It is the best look I have had  in a long long time.  I have also tried the Brutal Nightmare on a route 66 Kegel pattern and had no prohblems with the ball over or under reacting.  When the pattern burned a bit I chased the oil line in and it still has enough recovery.  This ball is a must for your arsenal.

Lane Condition:  Mexico City

Length: 41 Feet

Volume:

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc) Sport

I am a left Hander, and my ball speed is 16mph.

The DVA Brutal Nightmare has been a ball that I have been waiting for, for a long time.  This ball I had to do some surface change because the conditions we have been bowling on were shorter, and the ball was just burning up to early, so I polished more and the first Brutal I drilled, I polished it for shorter patterns, and the second Brutal I drilled, I left it out of the box, and I used this one on the Mexico City and it allowed me to pray way out, and I was the only one to play that far out, with any ball reaction.

This ball has alllowed me to play inside and open the lane up on a THC.  This ball is a ball you have to make surface changes on certain lane conditions.

If you get ball, you will not be disappointed!

This ball works great on long and oily patterns!

Likes:  Gets through the heads very clean with strong backend reaction!

Dislikes:  This ball is not meant for Short Patterns.

Great Job DV8 on another Fantastic Ball!!!

Brutal Nightmare 45x4x45 in box finish
Patterns:  Stone Street (43'), Easy Street (37'), Middle Road (40')

I drilled the Brutal to compliment my Terror which is great for going sideways through burnt up lanes.  I wanted the Brutal to allow me to do the same thing but on tighter lanes.

Likes:  The Brutal bridges the gap between the Terror and Nightmare by being medium in length and giving me a strong arc off the spot (but not as ridiculous as the Terror).  It fits well in my bag for medium-medium/heavy oil and can be manipulated enough with angles and release so that I can keep it in my hand for an entire night of league or most of a tournament.  What impresses me the most about the Brutal is that even though this ball is a strong asymmetric, I don't have much fear of it running out.  The Brutal is your house shot killer!

Dislikes:  Extreme wet or dry where you should be throwing something else anyways

DRILL PATTERN

Dual Angle: 50 x 5 x 30

X Hole (If there is one): 7/8'' Hole on the Axis 2'' Deep

LANE CONDITION

Length: Multiple

Volume: Multiple

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): Multiple

COMMENTS

Likes: Very strong off of the spot and continuous through the pins

Dislikes: None

This ball is absolutely amazing. I didn't think there could have been a ball that would have hooked more than the Nightmare, and they just keep doing. Machuga said it best in the video for DV8, this ball just flat out hooks. You can put it on ice, and it would hook. I had used it at the 2013 Insidebowling.com Open, and it worked pretty well there for me. As well, I have used it on my local house shots, and I am at least 5 boards to the left with my feet than I normally would be.

The great part is that it looks like sometimes it is going to just keep going right when I throw it that way, and then all of a sudden, it gets a huge burst of energy, comes back left and destroys the pins, sending them everywhere. It is now hard for me to get that ball out of my hand, because it is so good.

LANE CONDITION

Length: 38-40 feet

Volume: Medium

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): Just THS so far

Drilling - Pin above ring finger, MB just right of thumb

Coverstock prep: Box finish (500 plus Rough Buff)

COMMENTS

Likes: The hybrid cover keeps it from rolling out at your feet, but the strong surface finish and core still make it a very, very strong ball. This ball can really chew through some oil!

Dislikes: Nothing notable

PICTURES AND/OR VIDEOS

The Brutal Nightmare is only my second DV8 piece - the Endless Nightmare was my first - and I am extremely impressed with it! The ball comes with an intimidating 500 box finish plus rough buff. When you see a ball that appears to be as dull/matte as this one, you expect it to roll super early and have nothing left down the lane. That is not the case with the Brutal Nightmare. Yes, the ball does pick up quickly, but it doesn't die out in the heads, which allows the ball to still store plenty of energy for a big move down the lane.

For me, the Brutal is best on the fresh. Now, my THS is medium volume at best, so I have to start fairly deep in order to give this ball the fuel it needs. When I throw it properly, it makes a smooth, strong arc off the spot, and the hit is fantastic. The one downside is that I rarely have any miss room inside. That may seem like a weakness, but it's not. That just shows you that this ball hooks harder IN THE OIL than it does off the dry. That tells me that if/when I use this ball on truly serious oil, it's going to come to life and be even stronger than it is now! The hit with this piece is already top notch - very strong pin action, especially on mixers - so I can't imagine how good it will be on more volume!

All in all, if you're looking for a piece for medium-heavy to heavy oil, the Brutal Nightmare is going to be as much ball as 99% of bowlers will ever need. It is smooth, strong, and surprisingly versatile. If you have a chance to pick one of these up, do yourself a favor and take advantage of that opportunity; I don't think you'll regret it!
