Can one person make a difference?
« on: October 12, 2017, 10:14:38 AM »
Every week it seems as if my opponents have the game/series of their life, at minimum they bowl well over their average against my team.  If this was limited to the last few weeks I would chalk it up as bad luck, but its been going on for 2+ years in 2 different leagues and houses.

The thought has crossed my mind that maybe its me that is causing everyone to bowl out of their minds when they bowl against me.  I play straight up the 5 or 6 board with med-heavy oil equipment (I come up the back of the ball, 350-375 revs and 15-16 mph) which is possibly burning up the outside enough to create a wall that players can bounce off of.

I have read that a 2 handed bowler can tear apart an oil pattern, can 1 bowler do the same but in a favorable way, i.e. create a wall?

Maybe its just a REALLY long string of back luck at the bowling alley and I am overthinking things.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure that one bowler can overly create what's already there on a house shot as in the wall. If you really want to know look at your record by game. If your supposition is true you should be losing much more often in the second and third games than you are in the first when the effect should be at it's most pronounced.

It's hard to say what's going on without seeing your opponents and how they bowl and the line they are playing.  You described yourself but not them.  Best advice I could give is to try to come up with a strategy early on to beat them.  In one of my leagues there is a large number of 180ish avg no thumb crankers and lofters.  They are beginners and new to the game.  Majority of them are guys in their early 40's in decent shape who can muscle the ball down the lane, but being new they lack the finesse and experience.  In game 1 they can put up big numbers on a fresh pattern but by the middle of game 2 they are done for.  No hold left for them so everything overhooks and they can't get a right side spare to save their life.  I think this is because of our strategy on breaking the pattern down.

Our 5 man team has two scratch bowlers playing the 2 and 5 spot.  I'm #2.  Our strategy is to survive game 1 and keep it close because we know game 2 and 3 are in the bag.  We play similar lines starting 15 to the breakpoint and break the pattern down eliminating their hold.  We gradually increase our speed to keep that line and then move left if we have to.  We pay close attention to each others shot to guess when to speed up or move left.

If this scenario fits what's happening to you; then maybe start your night off playing a little deeper and with less speed and more hand.  That way maybe you can move the wall just a little farther inside and give them problems.

Depends on if that one person is throwing an EPX T1 down your line.  Amazing how fast that ball sucks up oil.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

Yeah. I can blow an absolute hole in a pattern with my Incinerate within 6 frames.

Not me at least.  Too busy throwing that EPX down the 7 board to create some miss room.

If I am friends with a team then there will be some friendly banter back and forth, but if I don't know the team I let my bowling do the talking.

Yes - be that team they hate! Their anger with bowling your team will screw up their focus and they will make poor shots.
