Ball Review: Avalanche Black/Electric Green
Date: 6/17/09

Bowler Information:

Initial ball Speed: 16.5 - 17 mph
Tilt: 10 Degrees
Axis Rotation: 30 Degrees
Rev Rate: 300-340 RPMs

Coverstock - PowerKoil 18 Pearl
RG min - 2.524”
Differential - .024”

Drill Specs:
Pin to PAP - 4.75”
Degree From VAL: 40"
Vertical Pin Orientation: Up
Drill Angle - 60"
Small P2 Extra Hole

This new Avalanche is a welcome addition to the best value price line in bowling.  The old reliable PowerKoil 18 Pearl shell provides slightly more traction in the oil when being compared to the N'Control Powerboost used on the blue pearl Avalanche while also providing an extremely quick response to friction at the breakpoint.  This ball follows the trend of all of the Brunswick balls by being extremely clean through the front with lots of movement down lane.  The ball was intended to provide me a stronger response version of the Avalanche Solid when the solid was running low on energy and this ball provides all of that and then some.  It is maybe a board weaker than my similarly drilled solid avalanche with a later more defined transition at the breakpoint.  If you need reliable backend at a fantastic price point...turn up the electricity with the Avalanche Pearl Black/Electric Green.

I drilled this gem with a 60x6x70. I needed a compliment to my Rattler with a 2 1/4 pin. This fits the bill great. This ball is similar to the old pearl. I feel it is a little flippier then the old. I thew it on THS and I could get in some and the ball would still corner great with good carry. I do have alot of hand so my reaction is far different than the average rev rate. this ball will need dry boards to react properly. A great addition to any tournament bowler's arsenal.

Pin: Above fingers
GC: on midline 1 1/4 out
Surface: 2000 with Brunswick factory shine

Condition: Sport 36 and 39 feet

Strength: The ability of this ball to clear the heads and midlane while playing down and in and maintain carry was very impressive. On the 36 foot sports pattern after 4 to 5 games I was able to move right of the track and use the dry to the right and tug up the track line.

Weakness: Long oil patterns and carry down to the right of the break point.

Overall: This ball will fit great in great when the Rattler and Wild Thing start to check up early and start to hang corner pins.

On bowlingball.com they have a Mika K. layout and thats how I had this drilled up.  Wow what an amazing ball and drill pattern. I have about 8 games on it and already shot a 299,300 back to back (in practice) but, I just got done bowling on this pair in league that night so they had some games on them.

It goes real long then BAM it crushes the pocket. It hits a lot harder than I expected and the overall hook is way more than I was expecting for a light bulb core and a low end ball. I truelly believe this will be one of the best low end balls of the year, IMAO.

5" pin to PAP above the fingers
No weight hole
OOB finish

For those of you regularily bowling on shorter sport patterns, and looking to add a ball to your arsenal, I HIGHLY recommend the black/green avalanche. Every Avalanche has it's own reaction and place. The Solid was strong, the silver blue pearl needs more friction for consistency, and the Slide has a skid snap look. The new Green Black IMO has the best overall reaction of the series. The PK18 is a great pearl coverstock and the Rampage was one of my all time favs. It reads the lane better than the Slide when they are both in OOB finishes.

I was bowling on day old Viper pattern and the solid Avalanche was too strong for the line I wanted to play, but the B/G let me play outside and gave me a very strong finish to the pocket.

The ball doesn't flare very much becasue of the low diff, and I don't plan on drilling an extra hole.

Like the Corvette this ball gives the most bang for the buck.

Layout:
45 by 5.5” by 45
no hole
OOB surface

Bowler Stats:
325 rpms
18.5mph

Condition:
39’ THS on Pro-Anvil

I have the “old” Avalanche Pearl (White/Blue) with a more extreme layout since the pin is further from my axis and the VAL angle is closer to 25-30 degrees. The Av. Pearl B/G is a very nice connection between my Av. Pearl W/B and the rest of my arsenal. It has the length I needed and a smoother response to the friction than the previous pearl. Don’t get me wrong, it has an angular backend, but not as much as the other Av. Pearl W/B due to the layout.

On the fresh I played a line with a laydown of 10 out to about 8-9 at the breakpoint with great results. If I got it outside early, the weaker layout allowed the ball to skid a little more instead of picking up early and going through the nose. Likewise, if I tugged it inside a little, the weaker layout combined with the cover allowed for more distance for the ball to transition when going through the inside of the THS, resulting in a good amount of hold area without lacking carry.

Like the other balls in the series, I’ve found it to be able to play almost any angle on THS with release and speed changes and I never saw the carry suffer. I plan to test this out on viper later on.

The Avalanche Pearl B/G is officially the first ball out of my bag whenever I’m bowling on THS. It has easy length, good backend movement, and has just the right amount of response on the dry boards created by the pattern or by transition. I feel like this ball could easily be a benchmark ball for those with higher rev rates and/or those bowling on conditions with lighter oil.

My Black/Electric Green Avalanche Pearl is drilled 4 1/2 X 1 1/2 with a 4" pin buffer. X- hole on axis. This puts the pin under my ring finger. In degree terms this would be a 0* X 4 1/2 X 70*.
With this layout and surface, the ball is very early and continuos. It needs head oil and is fairly smooth off the breakpoint. With a different layout and surface, this ball can become quite a bit longer and sharp on the backend. I originally had it drilled pin up and polished and the reaction was totally different. For me, it was too over/under in that form, I like the new layout better for the conditions I use the ball on(fresh).
Having Powerkoil 18 Pearl coverstock, the ball will last a long time and is very versatile. It responds to surface changes well.
All in all, a very good value and I would recommend this ball to anyone.

Brunswick Avalanche Black/Green

Ball Speed = 16.5 mph
PAP = 4 inches by 3/8 up
Pin = 0-1 inches
Surface = OOB Finish
Layout = Pin is 4 inches to my PAP in the center of my grip with the cg right below

I drilled this ball specifically for a tournament in Minot, North Dakota (The Fisher Motors Shootout).  Their lane surface is new guardian and the lane pattern was Off the Beaten Path, part of the Kegel Challenge Series.  This pattern on guardian surface, hooks so much and burns up so quick.  If I did not have this ball I would not have made the finals.

I'll start by saying that this ball may read the lane better than any pearl I've had. It is very smooth and predictable and I have yet to see it under or over react. It clears the fronts with ease and retains energy whether you are playing up the boards or inside of 6th arrow!

If you are bowling on a THS, shorter oil patterns, or need something late in the day I highly recommend having this ball in your bag.

Ball Name - Avalanche Pearl Black/Green

Bowler Specs

Right Handed
Tweener
15 MPH
4000 Polished Surface

Description - The Avalanche Pearl is back with a new color (Black/Green) and coverstock that is sure to turn some heads.  This year's version features PowerKoil 18 along with the ultra reliable light bulb that produces a stronger, consistent ball reaction.

Drilling - This ball is drilled 4 x 5 with no weight hole.  This ball will give the look of a basic "over the label" drill.

Reaction - The reaction is definitely stronger that the previous avalanche pearl.  I am sure that is due to the change in coverstock.  This ball picks up  earlier and is more aggressive off the spot.  It hits the pins with force and power.  This ball can be used first out of the bag without fear and even can handle a tad more oil also.

Overall - The changes with this ball have put it in a class by itself (among mid-priced balls).  If you want big bang for little bucks, chose the new Avalanche pearl Black/Green.

Thank you to Billy O, new product rep Brian Bever and all the good folks at Brunswick.

Ball: Brunswick Avalanche Pearl Black/Electric Green

Ball Specs:

2" pin
3 1/2 oz. top weight
OOB finish

Drilling:

5 1/2" pin to PAP/pin under middle finger
CG in palm
No X-hole

I drilled my Avalanche Pearl to combat drier lane conditions.
This ball has been a great addition to my arsenal. If the heads begin to dry up I can still get this piece down lane yet not squirt right through the break point.
I find this ball most useful when I need to attack a dry condition. It allows me to control areas of the lane that many weaker balls simply want to overreact to. When other players are watching their equipment get through the heads then look as if someone kicked them uncontrollably to the left or right, I am able to keep the Avalanche in play shot after shot.
Every competitive player should have a ball like this in their bag. This ball will keep you in play when the lanes burn up and the scoring pace goes down.

Thanks again to Brian Bever and Chuck G. at Brunswick for all of their support!

THIS BALL IS AMAZING!!!

PAP 5 3/4 and 1/2 up
Lay out 4x4 correction hole on pap

For this ball being on a skid flip lay out it rolls amazingly smooth so predicable but yet makes nice transition on back end with out any jump of misread and just sends pins flying into the pit. I recently pulled this ball back out just because of the fit on it but fell in love all over again shooting 697 811 734 and 622. 811 being my first honor score (248, 297, 266) running the front 9 twice at state. i haven't changed the surface at all haven't needed to with this its a perfect combination for your lighter oil shots gives me plenty of room though accross the lane with how much hand i have. This ball is a fantastic put out from brunswick! Proud to use the B word!

Avalanche #1
Pin 5.5" from PAP (above bridge)
This ball was a lot stronger than I expected, providing great length and a very strong backend.  I found it particularly effective on burnt out lanes going sideways through the pattern when everything else was hooking early.

Avalanche #2
Pin 6" from PAP (below middle finger
This ball was drilled primarily to play parallel to the lane on burnt up patterns.  It was really effective at Canadian nationals on the Stockhold pattern (low volume 34') on a really old wood surface.  This ball has also been useful on some drier house patterns where I can play the oil line.  Honestly my favourite ball in the bag!
