BVP Ambush
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: Not Available
The Brunswick BVPâ„¢ series has been developed to provide the widest range of reactions available at the popular mid-price point.  The BVP series provides any bowler the ball performance they’re looking for at a price they can afford.

Technology
The BVP Ambushfeatures a Pearlized Low Load Particle coverstock.  Known for mid-lane recovery with controlled and continuous breakpoints, the Brunswick low load particle ball reaction has been a favorite for many types of bowlers on both high scoring house shots and more demanding sport lane conditions.

The BVP Ambush’s version of the low load particle coverstock is an updated version of the same coverstock made popular by the Fuze Eliminator, Danger Zone Pro HPD and Navy Quantum.  The BVP version includes a hint of pearl in addition to the particles.  The Ambush’s Low load particle coverstock delivers more traction in the oil and more gradual reaction to the driest parts of the lane than pure reactive coverstocks.

On typical house shots the BVP Ambush’s low load particle coverstock helps smooth over reactions to the driest parts of the lane creating a smoother but more predictable ball reaction that many bowlers prefer.

On more demanding sport shots the BVP Ambush’s low load particle coverstock increases mid-lane traction helping to create mid-lane recovery and improve the skid/roll/hook ball transition when reactive coverstock balls are going too long .

Utility
•Out of the Box: With its High Gloss Polish finish the BVP Ambush will match up well on medium-dry to medium-oily lane conditions.
•When dulled:The BVP Ambush’s hooking action will increase and its arc will become more even, creating a better match-up for oily lane conditions and help blend the over/under reactions seen on wet/dry lane conditions.

Reaction Setup
The BVP Ambush can be drilled using the standard drilling techniques developed for two-piece balls, see the included instructions for reaction characteristics and layout details.

The BVP Ambush is finished with Brunswick’s Factory Finish High Gloss Polish.  To bring your BVP Ambush back to its original factory finish sand the surface to 400-grit then use Brunswick’s Factory Finish High Gloss Polish.  Available from your local Pro Shop.

Stats
Ball Speed 17-18 mph
Revrate  425 or so
Tilt approx 15 degrees

Layout 5 inch pin 45 degrees, 1 inch above midline, small hole on val even with thumb.  Box finish....

This ball compliments the Vapor very well.  It reads the lane a touch earlier with a smoother move to the pocket.  It reminds me a lot of the Fuze Eliminator, which was one of my favorite balls of all time.

I am looking forward to throwing this ball a little more in the coming weeks and getting a better feel for it.  Right now it seems like it will be a winner.

side note: Brunswick Staffer Jason Sterner shot 806 at me tonight with his...he didn't seem to be disappointed throwing airborn wood at 10-pins all night.

Ball came in with 2.5 inch pin and 3 oz top.

This was a purchase to replace my dying Lane #1 Carbide Lrg and Track Sheer Havoc, both particle balls. Both of these balls were drilled the same and I drilled the Ambush likewise, stacked leverage, pin to the right of my ring.  This ball out of box did not give me a good reaction, was either to jumpy or started up too soon, so I experimented a little sanded up to 800 then polished, ball reaction got a little better but now it didn't handle any type of medium oil.  So I sanded it to 2000 and bingo great reaction, and fits in my arsenal perfectly.  It is a good medium oil ball when it can clear the heads and midlane well, for a particle ball this ball has a pretty large amount of backend.
This I believe will be the inbetween ball for many bowlers, those whose heavy oil ball will roll out on the back and whose other medium oil ball just doesn't have enough on the back.  Expect a strong backend reaction out of this medium oil ball.   Also I threw my friends Vapor Zone drilled the same way and the difference was that the Ambush had more backend a little more controllable in my opinion, but the vapor would read the mids a little better.

Brunswick Ambush:

Ball Specs
The ball being drilled was a 3” pin out with 3.00 oz top weight.
Drilling: Pin 4 1/2" from PAP and Mb 45 degree angle. Pin is Above Ring finger, 3" above grip midline. Weight Hole on my axis. Factory Polished.

Bowler Information:
Track diameter is 10 1/2.
PAP is measured at 5 1/4 over and 3/8" up.
Average ball speed (foul line to head pin) is 17 mph.
Axis rotation is typically 90 degrees
Initial rev rate is typically 300 rpm, "Tweener"
Lane Condition and Pattern:
AMF Bowlero, HPL 9000 Panel. Oil Pattern: Medium Heavy Oil and slightly clean back ends. Fairly Flat condition from edge board to edge board.

REVIEW:
One of my favorite Brunswick Balls I ever threw was the Fuze Eliminator. For a particle ball, that ball was so smooth through the fronts and had such strong but predictable move on the backends, it was one of those balls you wish could last forever, the Ambush is that same ball. With ball manufactures going away from particle it is interesting Brunswick still stays with particle technology. Again, Brunswick has a winner on their hands with this one. This is one of those no brainer balls, a must have in the bag, one you can start with and stay with. Best lane condition, medium to dry factory polished, can be used 2nd shift from an inside angle and still will perform flawlessly. A+ in my book, great value for the money. Thanks for reading my review.

I have high revs medium speed
I laid it out with the pin next to my ring and cg in palm

It is a pretty aggressive ball and i have probably put about 20 games or so in tournaments so i really don't how long it will hold up yet but it is really good on pro anvilane. When the oil pushes down it is a good ball to go to because the particle cover  gives a pretty even reaction when you get over under. I shot the second half of an 800 with it a couple weeks back.
definately has a place in the bag for every tourney bowler.

See profile for stats:

15lbs
3" pin
Drilled 4 1/2 x 3 1/2(IMB) (pin 1 1/2" ab grip)
Weight hole 4" from center grip inside PAP
Surface at 2000 Abralon
http://s45.photobucket.com/albums/f95/laner7pin/Arsenal/?action=view¤t=DSCN0920.jpg

Drilled 2 weeks ago to compliment my Rampage (same drilling but with a slightly longer pin) something the gets through the heads clean and is smooth at the breakpoint and continuous through the pins. Rampage is both clean and smooth but with the pearl reactive cover is a tad jumpy on the backend. Ambush as a particle pearl is definately not as jumpy but plenty strong through. Used in a tournament recently where the leftside played straight up 10 no matter how much hand you had. Used the Ambush almost exclusively and was able to score fairly decent considering the small window I was in (no miss left or right by more than 1 board it felt like). Used the following week in practice and noticed the ball was prone to overreact if it hit dry too early, took the surface down to 1000 Abralon and squared up a pinch and ball is much smoother off of the "dirt".
League last week finally decided to use the new lane machine which tends to make the lanes play a bit slicker, used the Ambush at 1000 and played a little 8-5 bump and was able to outscore most everybody in the house on this night.

Overall ball seems very cover tweak friendly, OOB, 2000, and 1000 Abralon pads have given me 3 different looks and all with good results. Pin carry is very good as long as operator error is not in play. The BVP line is THE best mid-price range of equipment in bowling. Bowlers with medium/higher speeds with all various rev rates should like this ball very much. Thank you Brunswick.

My Ambush was given to me by Mika Koivuniemi. As mika's a powerful bowler, i thought the coverstock would have worn out quite a bit. my pin is above and in between my finger holes, meaning that it is a skid/snap ball.

I love the Ambush. The hook is very continuous and powerful. however, i get quite a lot of pin 10 leaves. The Ambush is also a very versatile ball. It can be used on med-oily, oily(just have to play the outside line and it will snap it great!) and med-dry lane conditions. It is also a forgiving ball, but not as forgiving as my Scorchin' Inferno.

Overall, a great ball by Brunswick. Probably the best BVP ball since the punisher, in my opinion. Overall rating - 9/10

Specs:
15.04lbs
3 inch pin
3 oz top

Layout:
Pin 4-1/2 from PAP
CG 3-1/2 from PAP
Pin under ring, cg kicked out, X-hole down low

The BVP AMBUSH is a great ball. It's the perfect compliment to the Vapor Zone and Absolute Inferno. The motion of this ball is that it revs in the mid lane and has a nice arc on the backend. When carry down happens, you have to tighten up your angles. If the carry down is too much, you should put this ball away. When you run into those spotty or wet/dry conditions, the AMBUSH is the perfect ball to use.

Brunswick has created another awesome ball.

I think everyone should have at least one of these balls in their tournament bag.

Ball Drilled 2L and CG is straight down. The ball goes long then hook slightly toward the Pocket. This ball does not over react or slide but Hit really really hard.  I know the lane is about Medium but when throw these ball it feels like there no oil at all and feels like Driving with a cruise control. Love it.
Works Perfectly on outside Track 8-6 board.

I have had two of these-Please see my profile for stats:

Ball Lay Out #1. Pin over ring finger 5 x 5(80 deg),no weight hole. I was thinking of having a smooth looking pearl particle for league conditions. There were so many options in my bag, this didn't see the lanes often and was eventually sold. It did make a stronger than expected move on the back end, but just didn't jump out at me.

Ball Lay Out #2. I drilled this pin under the ring finger with the CG kicked out at a 45 deg angle(4x3)with a small hole down the VAL and left it box finish. This ball gave me a decent look on sport and regional type patterns when I needed the ball to lay off in the back of the lane.

The ball is a good ball, it just didn't fit and there are so many good Brunswick options out there.......

My Ambush is 16lb., 3 inch pin, 3.1 oz. top.

Drilled 5 x 4 1/2, no hole.  Box surface was scuffed with a grey scotch-brite.

I was a huge fan of the Fuze Eliminator, and this ball is so similar to it its scary.  The low-load particle cover reads the midlane very well, and it still retains a smooth, powerful backend reaction.

This ball is the first out of my bag on most conditions.  Being a very medium-strength ball, with this strong of a midlane move, makes it great for reading lanes and bowling on house conditions.  This ball is at its best when you can play straighter, but it is versatile enough to chase the oil line and move in for a few games.

We drilled several cases of these for the team, they are the first out of the bag for everyone.  Great predictable roll, and good hitting power is perfect for demanding collegiate conditions.

Ball is drilled pin (1/2) under ring cg slightly right of that.  Ball works great on the ths and broke down shots.  This ball has been a great benchmark for me.  But for me this ball has to have dry but when you get it you can live in it. Love it!!

Pin under ring, cg slightly right, box finish

Pros: Very smooth
      Extremely versatile
      Solid hit/carry

Cons: None that I can find.

Overall: This is a very versatile ball that will offer tournament players just about anything they need in middle of the road reaction. I could easily see someone covering any type of medium pattern they'd ever face by drilling and prepping a couple of these.

The ball movement is smooth, strong, and predictable and goes very nicely through the deck. At the price point, you simply can't beat this ball's performance.

Player Profile:
PAP: 5 3/8ths right, 9 1/6ths up
Release Speed: 17.5 mph
RPMS: 315 on average
Axis Rotation: 45-55 degrees

When I initially picked up the Ambush, I planned on using it on the new house shot league I'm about to start up in the summer which is a shorter length/medium-light volume pattern.  I was under the impression that the "smoothness" of the Ambush would be able to smoothen out the pattern and not "jacknife" at the end of it like polished and pearl reactives tend to in this house.  This house had Brunswick Pro-Anvils so most balls will get through the heads and midlane with no problem.  For higher rotation/higher rev players, controlling the movement down the lane can be a problem.

The Ambush is layed out with the pin 6" to the PAP and a shallow hole 1" x 1 1/2" deep one inch inside of my axis.  The layout looks something like this:

--*-------
--O-O----
------.----
----------X
-----------
-----------
---O------

The first shot I threw OOB in this house, I was standing 24 with my feet, getting the ball through the arrows at 14 and out to a "supposed" breakpoint of 7 down the lane.  I say "supposed" because on this first shot the ball hooked about 5 feet before it hit the spot I was trying to get the ball to.  I immediately felt dejected and thought "Great, drilled this ball for nothing, it hooks as much, if not more than my other Brunswicks".  After a few more "area checks" from the same spot with my feet, I deemed this ball too much coverstock for the pattern.  The Low Load Particle cover that I loved on the Eliminator and Navy Quantume definately is for higher volumes of oil.

I was practicing with my good friend bowlingmytmouse from the boards and he gave me the idea of incorporating a little bit of loft into the shot to compensate for my strong rotation.  I took a 9 board jump left to 33 with my feet and targeting 17 through the arrows, trying to get the ball to the range finder on 10 down the lane.  I sped up my timing and "stood up" more on the shot which increased the "flat spot" in my downswing.  This gave me about 5-6 feet of loft out onto the lane through my target and SUPRISE!  The Ambush looked like a completely different ball.

The tight flare rings from the layout keeps the ball online and give me 1" of tight flare in the oil.  The big suprise is when this ball comes back the flare lines are separated quite a bit more past the oil rings and gives me another 3 1/2" of flare on the backends.  Low flare in the oil, lots of late flare down the lanes(can be seen by the "burn rings") make for one hell of a ball on the inside part of the lane on this THS.  Before I knew it I was sitting on 9 in a row and could continue using this ball with unlimited recovery.  The Ambush showed no signs of roll out.

With my layout I can tell that the Ambush is quite a versatile piece.  Definately strong enough to play in oil(with a stronger drill), and it is quite dangerous on inside angles.  This ball is as aggressive as my Absolute Inferno, just a rounder motion so it makes for the perfect compliment if I'm 2-8-10'ing with the AI.  For me, this ball rolls really close to the Original Inferno and I can see myself using this ball alot on various house patterns, and PBA Scorpion, Shark, and Viper patterns.
