That moment when you've been searching for a certain reaction like some older balls and then bam a new one gets announced that checks all the boxes.

I remember my Eruption days, I bought them all. Loved em!

Then they all cracked on me after 6 months of use, giant circles cracks around the finger holes so I went to Motiv. They all had a paper thin cover stock.

If they just made the cover thicker, say 1/2" I could see the ball being really useful again. If it's the same paper thin cover then I don't see the point of it.

Sorry, the thickness of the coverstock has nothing to do with the cracking. I had a 900G Creature that had less than 3/8" thick cover and it never cracked. People have had old Lane Masters balls that were 2 1/2" thick and still cracked.

Cracking has to do with several factors:
- how it's treated at the factory, including how the ball are cured and under what conditions
- how the owner treats the ball: whether it is subjected to rapid changes in temperature AND/OR humidity.
- how the driller treats it when he is drilling it:
- - are the bits sharp?
- - does he drill it slowly?
- - does he bevel all the holes?
- - does he keep the pin at least 3/4" from any hole?
- - does he use minimal amounts of super-glue and keep the glue as far from the coverstock as possible (glue the inserts to the filler, not the coverstock)
- - plus a few others I can't think of right now.

I doubt it. Many older balls were and continue to be great options even in these days of supposed larger amounts of and more viscous oils. Many proprietors are still dirt cheap and could care less about league and tournament bowlers. Many put barely a whisper of oil on their lanes at any one time. They have zero idea of the relationship between oil and the protection of the lane surface.

Just like with roads though it depends on when your city was built seems like.  For example doesn't take driving long through Boston to realize they just paved the ox paths.  Also probably more likely to be able to find wood lanes there (haven't bowled there so can't say for sure).  Where as here in the desert southwest most of the cities suddenly exploded in population in the late 1950s after central air become affordable.  As a result our cities tend to be grids as they were built with the car in mind (though they sprawl pretty haphazardly as well).  Similarly at least in my area its virtually impossible to find wood lanes as pretty much your options are AMF or Brunswick centers with synethics with I wouldn't be surprised corporate determined oil all built in the last 20 years.

This looks like yet another attempt to duplicate the IQ Tour using a similar formula - solid cover, low diff, and the same or similar color scheme (e.g. Track TourSIC, Brunswick Magnitude). Anyway, I loved my original Eruption but never threw any of the Eruption Pro balls before now. This might be worth a look.

I'm with you re: roads in Boston. Good lord they're a treat sometimes! haha. As far as lanes are concerned though, I don't think there are too many wood centers left in MA, maybe in New England for that matter.

Got my Eruption Pro Blue fresh off the press after league last night. Threw a few shots and was quite pleased. The core has been a winner for me every time. I was a little worried about the cover just because it's a bit more aggressive, but a little shine (out of box surface, for the record) eased any remote concern that I had!

What do you think the differences are when comparing to the Spoiler?

Spoiler is CRAZY strong! Mid-level performance? I disagree. As long as there's enough oil, that ball won't quit but I definitely don't think I can play up the boards with it (most comfortable for me) at the house I normally bowl leagues in. I could play up the boards with the Eruption Pro, and even moved left a little with it. The Spoiler would be the ball I'd play deeper angles with though.

The Spoiler reminds me of a Scandal that you can actually draw shape from on the backend.

The original Eruption was out before the IQ Tour and was a low ground, low diff. Modified Resurgence core and maybe Storm was copying their idea! The numbers are very similar and Columbia just changes cover stocks! I’ve had both and my preference is the Eruption line. I guess they all have similar bowling balls and it’s all about the shape/reaction their wanting! Just my $.02, Bruce

OG Eruption 15 LB 2.46  .043
IQ Tour  15 LB 2.49  .029

If .043 is close to .029, then I guess we can compare the OG eruption to balls with diffs around .057 as well...

I use 14lb equipment and the numbers are almost identical between the IQ Tour and Eruption Pro Blue. I guess I look at them differently since not using 15lb. I prefer the Eruption myself, but that’s basically because I like the cover stock better.
