Ball Oven vs. Detox?
« on: December 10, 2017, 12:28:17 PM »
For those folks who have experience with both, do you feel that one does the job better than the other?  Or is it more an issue of speed (i.e. the Detox does the job in less time than say the Innovate Revivor Oven)?

Has anyone gone as far as putting a ball in a Revivor Oven until it stops bleeding and then putting that same ball into a Detox to see if the Detox can extract any more oil from it?

Detox is all of the above, much better, quicker, and safer.  We did our own internal testing as well and there's zero contest between the Detox and other methods.

Although we have used both, our current method is the Detox.  In my opinion it's somewhat faster, but the real benefit is that the ball goes into water heated at 120 degrees vs. 140 or higher with the Revivor, or the like.

I believe both methods to be safe, but a ball not heated as high would have a faster "cool down" time in case you wanted to resurface afterwards.

I personally think the detox works better. Had a ball baked before and it only hooked again for 5 games. Maybe it was just a bad experience, but that's my take. Every ball I've seen detox was fine for many games!

Is there any way that you can elaborate on "much better"?  I can comprehend quicker (time savings) and safer (lower temps the ball is exposed to).  Does it extract oil deeper where a more traditional oven can't reach, I suppose would be the real question.

If it were able to extract oil from a ball that has already had all the oil baked out of it via an oven, that would be a huge selling point (and reason for me to seek out a PSO with a Detox unit).

To 2handedrook12's point:

Might seem to indicate that more oil may be extracted?  If more oil is removed from the ball via Detox, the ball should have more capacity to hold oil and able to go longer between treatments?

I wish I had access to both types of machines so I could do a test using an oven first until it stops bleeding oil, allowing the ball to fully cool down, and then a treatment via the Detox machine to see if anything continues to come out.

Love your videos, BTW, Luke. :)

I think it does go deeper. Perhaps it would have taken more sessions to bake the oil out. Either way, I'm going detox all the way!

How much does the Detox device cost?

Good ball ovens can be had for as little as $100-150. Some make them for even cheaper.

So unless you're rich, you have to go to a pro shop that has one, if you must use it.

I don't think the OP was asking because he was thinking of purchasing either unit.  He just wanted to know based on someone's actual experience supported by actual results/ facts as to which one may be better than the other.
Luke seems to have done some actual testing vs everyone else including me who have posted.  So, I personally would be inclined to lean in his direction.  I say that based in the fact I own the Nu ball oven which does a satisfactory job extracting oil at 125 degrees for me.
We have two pro shops in our local area.  One uses the Innovator oven and the other the Detox.  Both charge $30 for extraction with a resurface.  I have never heard any customer from either shop complain about the process they chose.

Ovens bleed out whatever comes out over a couple hour period, Detox actually extracts it much faster and much safer on the ball.  No comparison.  We baked a ball for two hours, Detoxed half of it, baked for another hour.  Side that was detoxed was dry as a bone, side that was out was still bleeding.

There are cheaper ultrasonic cleaner units not made specifically for bowling balls in which you could get a fairly good one for $400 or so.  Still not sure I would risk it.  Honestly if you have a decent size arsenal (so not always throwing same ball, plus your spare ball probably won't be absorbing much oil) and you are religious about cleaning after every session then a very rare trip to pro shop for extraction will more than do.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

Yes, that's indeed the case.  I also have a Nuball oven so have a way to extract oil already.  If it takes me 2-3 hours in the oven, I don't really care because I can do it from the comfort of my own home.

But if it can't extract as much as a Detox, I might be tempted to visit a pro shop that has one.

Again, I think the best test would be to use an oven to bake a ball until it's done bleeding (i.e. keep checking every 30 minutes until there is no more oil coming out for that last 30 minute window).  Then after you've taken it as far as an oven can, put it in the Detox and watch it to see if any more oil comes out.  If you can still see tendrils of oil coming out or the water is cloudy with oil after the oven has extracted all it can, now that would be something.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Detox.  It clearly seems to extract faster than an oven can and potentially at a lower temperature.  I'm just trying to see if you take the time out of the equation, does it extract any MORE oil than can be extracted from an oven given an unlimited amount of time.

I have seen some use auto parts or jewelry cleaner machines that seem just like the detox machines. Has anyone tried these themselves?
