Blue Scotch-Brite pads
« on: May 06, 2007, 03:51:03 PM »
Hello Group,

Could someone here enlighten me a little bit on this? I'm trying to understand the grit levels according to this chart.

So lets take the first one for instance:

7445 - White pad, called Light Duty Cleansing - (1000) 1200-1500 grit

Ok, so this tells us that it is a white pad but then it has the number (1000) and then it has the number 1200-1500 grit. What do the numbers mean? is the
(1000) their part number???

And why does it say 1200-1500 grit? why wouldn't it be just one number there like 1200 grit? when I read that it tells me that it can be at 1200-grit or

1250-grit, or 1425-grit, get the confusion!! LOL, I'm just trying to get a clearer picture here thats all.

What got me thinking about this I went to the store today and picked up some "Blue Scotch-Brite" pads for using on my spinner so when I got home I checked this chart and thought to myself:

Blue Scotch-Brite is considered to be about 1000 grit

its considered to be about 1000-grit, hehe

Part #'s are to the left the # in () is charlest's grit value and I fully trust his evaluation of this as he has more knowledge in his little finger than most pro shop owners in my area. He is a tremendous resource of infromation here. And if I misquoted anything I am sure he will chime in and set us both straight.

???

My guess would be a difference in materials and therefore different ratings as far as the grit and abrasiveness goes.

I seem to recall looking at different sandpapers and comparing the grits.  Some were aluminum oxide and others were silicone carbide.  Even though the grits listed were the same, they were actually very different because of the ratings guidelines used for the products.

Other than that, I agree with mab......trust charlest!

The white pads are closer to 1500 IMO and will work if you apply lots of pressure. They are a better choice for just taking the polish off a ball and not altering the grit too much since alot of polished balls come around 1000-2000 grit + polish OOB.

The blue pads don't seem to work as well as others. The ones that are used most often would be maroon(320-400),green(600),grey(800-1000).
