Layout question
« on: September 29, 2014, 06:55:23 PM »
I have a Asymmetrical ball laid out at 90 x 2 1/4 x 70.I really like this layout on wet/dry house patterns. What is the Dual angle for a symmetrical ball for the same reaction.I know there should be a difference in pin distance. Also what ball specs should be used pin distance and top weight.

the short pin on an assym translates into a longer pin on the symetric core. what ball is the layout on now?

The asymmetric ball is a AMF Solar Flare

Wow with all the knowledge on this site and nobody has an answer.Over 100 views so I know its been looked at.I think it would be a 90 x 1 1/2 x 70 with a weight hole 2 1/4 down the val..But was thinking some driller might have the answer.

On the symmetric the first number is only relative for cg placement.  So id put it where you have the option to add a weight hole latter if needed. Keep the pin to pap and val angle the same.

The high rg axis moves towards holes drilled. The low rg axis moves away from holes drilled. Most psa/mb on symmetric core balls ends up in the ball park of 6 3/4" from the pin through the thumb hole. It can be moved out some by adding a weight hole.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

It is really going to depend on the specs of both balls.  If the asymmetrical ball has a strong mass bias then it could add some flare to the ball even with the 2 1/4 pin to PAP.  What is the distance of the MB to your PAP? Where is it in relation to the thumb hole?  A similar spec symmetrical may not flare the same at a 2 1/4 pin to pap.  You may need to tweak the symmetrical layout to get a similar reaction based on all of these factors.

Thanks for the replies guys. The question about mb to pap is 6 1/2 on the asymmetric.MB is right below the thumb hole roughly 2 1/4".I do understand there is some variables.Just trying to see if there was a way to get close to same reaction as the asymmetrical.Ball is money for me on wet/dry house shots.I can tug it and get hold tweak it right in the dry and dont hook in my face.

If the RG and differential specs and cover are about the same, I would go with the same pin to PAP and VAL angle. Maybe a bit longer pin to pap at 2 3/4, because I think an asymmetrical ball with the same RG differential will still flare more than symmetrical.  You could always increase the flare with a weight hole too though.  As said before, the drill angle on symmetricals is not important to reaction.. only to where it puts the cg and thus where you can put a weight hole.  I would put the cg so that you could but a weight hole near or a bit lower than the thumb hole, if needed.  If the ball doesn't react the same, a hole here would mimic the MB position of the asymmetrical ball. Depending on the distance from the pin, it could also increase the flare. Not knowing all of the RG specs on the two balls makes it difficult to know for sure though.
