Nationals Layout Thoughts
« on: May 04, 2018, 09:13:48 PM »
Drilling up a ball for a teammate to use at Nationals tournament.  Looking for a second ball to go to after fresh shot has began to transition.  Something to move in a bit with, but still controllable on the backend.  For a number of reasons, we chose the Roto All Out Show Off.

He has 17.5  mph at the pins, low tilt - very high track (near fingers - PAP is 5 7/8" over), rotation ~ 70 deg and rev rate around 400 to 425.  Usually we struggle with getting the ball into a roll early enough and making the backend smooth.  Due to the high track, any "pin down" layouts tried in the past have flared over the fingers.  So we have been relying on surface to help out.  Wondering if there are any layout ideas that maybe we haven't thought about.

Thanks!

what you're asking about is generally just a product of cover and surface. Struggling getting the ball into a roll sounds like he has higher tilt on top of the higher rotation

Personally I would say the All Out is too weak especially considering those factors. In the situation you mentioned, I'd probably look at something like a C300 Lit Pearl or Hammer Fierce Phobia with 2000 surface. Marvel Pearl could be close with surface also

What ball is he intending to start with?

Nationals is pretty heavy oil and he's got plenty of speed. All Out Show Off probably is an end of day ball for him unless you hit it with a lot of surface.

I'd just do a 4" in pin to pap...cg where u want it...(hole or no hole...in or swung out) and hit it with a 2k, 3k, 4k pad to take the shine off. Probably 2k or 3k with his speed.

U got your length, it won't roll over the fingers/thumb, and the surface adjustment will make sure it reads won't be over under.  I had mild success with a prodigy at Reno with this layout...swung out with a xhole...2k sanded no polish.

In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

Personally, I think it’s too big of a leap. I think the AOSO would be a great end of block ball that gets good length but doesn’t lope. But earlier in the set I’d expect a lot of over under.

For the early transition, I’d prefer to see a second rolly asym with less surface, like a No Rules Pearl at 4000.

Thanks.  That's my fear.  The first ball burns up and then when you pull out a second ball, it's too early.
I appreciate the input...  Will look for another option

Have you considered a shorter pin to PAP along with surface adjustments?

As far as the balls go, the Marvel Pearl(with surface) and Absolute Truth recommendations are pretty spot on. Could go with a 4 4-5 inch pin and use surface to blend or go with a 2 inch pin to really slow down the response time and still can fine tune the cover. Absolute Truth is one of the earliest rolling balls I've ever thrown and there is no jump out of it. Amazing ball for Nationals on the fresh. Honestly, Marvel Pearl after it would be a great 1-2 punch for Nationals.
League: Pitch Purple, Destiny Magenta

I honestly don't think you're going to find a ball strong enough to burn up. That being said, if you want to keep the ball in front of you more, the 2 inch pin is a great idea.
