Pin 2" from pap
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:39:50 AM »

If a ball is drilled with the pin 2" from the pap, what type of reaction would you expect to see?  I know it would depend on the cover stock, but in general what type of reaction would be expected?

Typically it makes the ball more controlled and provides less hook.

It will be lower flaring, but the shape will be dependant on wether or not it is symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical providing an earlier roll, and the asymmetrical will have a bit more flare and produce more side roll.

I have a Power Groove Particle Black Sparkle with such a setup - half-axis setup, with the pin at about 2" from PAP and the CG in the palm area (had a long pin, and so no balance hole was necessary ).
It is a rolly thing that needs a fast and firm release, but has some arcing move on the back end, and it literally blends out over/under issues. But it is a pretty special piece, moves and plays very different from any pin-above-leverage-point ball I have. Angle and carry can be an issue, because it rolls so early. But it feels at home straight down between 1st and 2nd arrow.

Check my review of it, and here's a video of it, showing how it arcs:
