RICO'D Eraser Blaze.....
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:32:06 PM »
So..., today I caved and had an old NIB Eraser Blaze punched with a RICO layout...  2.5 inch pin, 3.3oz Top-weight.

Tested today on wood lanes (45 foot flat shot) with flying backends, the ball would not jump even when I really got into it...  Nice even strong rolling arc. I am very happy with the reaction I saw, something I previously didn't have in my bag.

I do have a question however...,  The weight-hole placed 6 3/4" from the center of grip through the cg at a 45* angle was just under one inch in diameter.  The side-weight was brought back to legal limits.  I was wondering if by using the smaller x-hole did I change the reaction considerably? If the same ball with the same specs and the recommended 1 1/4" hole was punched and compared to my ball (with the less than one inch diameter hole) would I see a drastic change in ball shape?  With respect to this type of layout how much side-weight should/is be desired?

I am aware that the size of the x-hole will produce minor changes in ball shape (generally speaking - larger=smoother, smaller=sharper)

As far as I have learned,
The Rico needs a minimum sized weight hole to affect the shape of the core (roughly 7/8" diameter, 2.5" deep, preferable 1" wide, 3" deep) to insure added flare and asymmetry. SMall holes defeat the goals of the Rico and reduce the overall desireable ball reaction.

A larger, deeper hole will generally be smoother and earlier. Once you have the desired reaction, I don't think changing the hole makes big differences, but it cvan make a difference.

charlest,

Isn't there a concern with the side-weight going to negative with a hole that large in diameter and deep....?

The change in the core dynamics makes a bigger difference than the change in static weights.  I like to use the big bit with my Rico drills almost no matter what.  Don't worry about having negative weight or what the static weights are for that matter.

Interesting....,

Thanks Mike.

I will adjust the hole if need be.  However, Right now it has great mid-lane read and an amazing continuation through the pins.  I really don't wanna mess with what's working.

Be careful about using too large a balance hole.  USBC rules say 1 1/4" max diameter (no USBC limit on depth), but that includes bevel.  Any hole drilled in a ball should have a little bevel to help prevent cracking, so if you use a 1 1/8" diameter hole you have to be careful not to bevel it too much.  Nationals and perhaps a few other tournaments are probably the only time your balls will be inspected closely enough to catch this, though.  --  JohnP

That's good to know. I have 2 balls with 1-1/4" craters + slight bevel. I will have to remember to not take them to tourneys!

None of my rico'd layouts have a hole larger than 1-1/8".
