Pin to CG distance
« on: August 22, 2017, 11:57:35 AM »
I searched and found the same type of threads, but they were 10+ years old.  So I'm wondering what the latest knowledge/opinion is on Pin to CG distance.  Storm symmetric balls in particular.

To be specific - how much of a difference does a 2 1/4 Pin to CG distance have compared to 4 1/4 Pin to CG distance?

Anything to be concerned about? Or just take whatever my PSO has in stock and have it drilled up?

It doesn't really matter. I requested a 3-4" pin from Motiv and for some reason the ball i got only had a 2 1/4 - 2 1/2" pin. I still used the same layout i planned on using. Any knowledgeable pro shop will know how to get a ball legal.

Drilling options is the most utility I've ever heard/learned/experienced. If you know what drilling you plan on using, a shorter or longer pin to cg distance can lend a little bit of assistance.

I think I understand what you're getting at.  So what layouts tend to work  better with short pin to CG distances?  And what layouts work better with long pin to CG distances?

Some factors to consider for a pro shop operator are bowlers span, drilling layout that maybe used, top weight of ball along with the pin to cg distance,  and the grips/inserts/inner changeable thumb that may or may not be used.

There are a ton of different variables that can factor into the questions you're asking.

In the end if I'm a pso and a bowler with a 5" span brings me a ball with a 2" pin and 3ozs of top weight and says I want it drilled pin up it's probably not going to happen without requiring a larger weight hole around the fingers that the bowler probably doesn't  want.

If a have a bowler with a 4"  span and a ball with a 4" pin and 3ozs if top weight and they want the ball drilled pin down it's probably going to also require a larger weight hole somewhere to make it work.

There's no performance advantages,  just obstacles to factor when drilling for any number of bowlers who may walk through the door. Many drilling layouts are a bi-product of trying to make something work for someone that maybe didn't have the ideal ball specs one would like.

I can relate to that. I have had to have a balance hole put in most every ball I have had drilled this decade, but the PSO's I have worked with have always gotten the performance and shape I wanted. I will say, it all comes down to span and layout choice, on the pin distance, from what I have seen.

Pin distance matters based on layout. If you want a pin up, high flare layout, using a 1 1/2" pin and having to use a P1 hole to get rid of side and top weight because a bowler uses an IT or Switch-grip in the thumb, isn't going to work out so well. You can bottom out the fingers, but then you start to really alter the core shape even more (especially if the core has a weighted puck on top, usually drilling into it decreases diff) plus drilling a bit of weight out of the ball.

Same if you want a pin down layout for control of motion, using a 4" pin distance ball limits you to using P3 or P4 holes, which also increases the diff in most cases and doesn't translate into control.

Pin distance matters.

Top weight matters too.

This topic is a reason why buying from your local pro shop does make a difference. Most times the pro shop will have multiple choices for a ball and be able to choose the ball with the specs that fit the drill you want. If the pro shop does not have something in stock or the right top/pin distance combo, the pro shop can order it and have the ball ready to go within a few days.

I should add...MOST pro shops. There are some out there that are crap as well.

When some folks buy online and get a deal to save $20, sometimes you get a ball with CRAP specs that do not allow the PSO to drill the ball the way you may want to drill the ball and you have no way to return the ball or to return the ball without getting hit a shipping fee back and possibly a restocking fee.

the only thing i dont like is a 1" pin and bigger than a 4.5" pin

2-4.5" seems to always be easy to layout and score well!

that being said im going to do a double thumb with a assym 5 + inch pin soon lol just for the hell of it
