Plastic spare ball always rolls over thumb hole?
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:12:43 PM »
Why is it that my plastic spare ball always tracks over my thumb hole and my high end balls do not?  I understand all the track flare and weight block/core info.  My axis point has been measured at 5 3/4 --> and 3/4^  which is a high track.  On my high end equipment the nearest oil ring is about 1/4" - 1/2" away from edge of thumb hole and 1" away from fingers. On the spare ball it tracks dead center of thumb and about 1/2" from fingers.

My thoughts are that my high end equipment MUST flare in mid-air just enough that when it lands on the lane it misses the hole and the plastic spare ball does not ( cause the lack of core/dynamics which causes flare).

Is there a special way to drill these plastic balls to prevent this. (very irritating hearing thump, thump, thump as it goes down the lane) and sometimes it even causes the ball to bounce or jump off line at the moment the ball hits the lane.

I have tried drilling one plastic ball with the CG (cg no matter  LMAO) about 3" right of grip center and it made no difference.  I think CG matters on these type balls,  I just don't know where to place it to cure this issue.

I have started having this same issue recently. Only thing in my case it seems to be worst shooting spares to the left (I am right handed). Occasionally I will see this on a right side spare, but not as often. I am in belief my issue is hand position since I am shooting straight at spares as opposed to hooking the ball with the high end equipment. Since I am killing the rotation, I am also letting the ball roll over the thumb hole. Our house conditions are on the drier side so far this year so even the plastic can hook off it you just grip it and rip it.

I agree with Tex with it hitting the thumb hole when flattening it out shooting straight at spares, but this happens regardless of release.  When I throw my high end equipment straight at spares it never hits the thumb and still flares a tiny bit also.

I recently drilled up a Storm Tropical Breeze (RG Diff: .009) 4x4 thinking it would be an aggressive enough drill to get some flare and get it from not hitting the thumb...WRONG... hits thumb just like my plastic ball, so I added a flare increasing weight hole and that helped just enough to get it to hit the very edge of the thumb hole.

I think what you might be seeing is that the more aggressive stuff is trying to find it's PSA. High end weightblocks are known for lowering the track a little. Pancake... not so much.

Just don't leave any more spares.  Problem solved

I can not see the ball tracking the same if you change your release. Breaking your wrist and coming up the back of the ball rolling it end over end will cause it to track over the thumb hole. Cupping your wrist and coming around the ball produces a different result for me.

Shooting at ten pins on dry shots I try to make the ball track over my thumb and fingers to make sure that it does not hook too much when it hits friction. Plastic definitely will hook off the dry wall.  The thump thump thump is music to my ears. Not a bad thing at all.

it means you have a high track. your track is probably right next to if not touching your thumb hole on your other equipment right?

This is the very reason I have used a more durable pearl urethane ball for spares.  Rolling over a slugged thumb hole where the bevel was only in the slug lead to cracking around the thumb slug.

My current spare ball has no thumb slug, but it's also a Taboo Spare.  I think this one has enough guts for the PAP to start migrating before the ball makes contact with the lane though.

There is a pretty good spare shooting pro by the name of Walter Ray Williams.

I believe his thumbhole sounds like this on his spare ball!

Thump Thump Thumb.....bump Thump!

I hear it works pretty good.  Wish I threw it like that!

i throw straight at majority of my spares. if you put any kind of rotation on the ball you are hoping and praying the ball doesnt check up on you or skid out. so you are never exactly sure if you will get the spare or not. if you break your wrist and point your thumb at the spare you are aiming for, which is what pros do, you will have less to worry about when you do go for spares. you wont master it at first, it takes practice. and yes your ball may roll end over end, but it wont hook which is extremely beneficial especially if you bowl on sport shots..

Yes, I hear the thumpity thump thump as I throw at my spares with plastic.  I figured if it's good enough for "Dead Eye" WRWJR, then it's good enough for me.

I had an issue similar to this.

I had a Brunswick black skull spare ball that did this constantly (I HATED it), however I now have a T-Zone as a result of it.  It ended up being a top weight issue.  My driller got me a T-Zone with a larger amount of top weight and even drilled the fingers a lot more shallow.  I never have an issue with it now so that tells me it was an equipment issue, at least as far as my personal game.

I have tried drilling one plastic ball with the CG (cg no matter  LMAO) about 3" right of grip center and it made no difference.  I think CG matters on these type balls,  I just don't know where to place it to cure this issue.

CG no matter for dynamic cored balls.

CG placement & the resulting static weights matter a whole lot for pancake cored balls.

Try drilling the ball with around 1/2 - 1 oz. of side, finger and top weight  in your next pancake cored polyester ball.

If you put the CG 3" right of the grip, the driller probably put a weight hole to make it legal. If he did, it could have wound up with bottom weight, which might also raise the track.
