Previously Drilled out MB
« on: September 01, 2015, 06:13:31 AM »
I intentionally purchased a ball with this setup.  I wanted Straighter and less midlane.

I got it!

Now I am thinking of a setup to increase midlane!  What is the effect of the MB having been drilled out previously?

When you reset it up to have more midlane, have you lost some of the Mass Bias effect once it has been drilled out?

It seems I have seen this topic before but could not find it on my quick search.  Your assistance appreciated.

I've seen a couple of other posts about a drilled out MB.

They basically all say that plugging and redrilling won't hurt a thing.

Just spin it up in a Determinator to find the PSA or use the plug spot for the PSA marker (if the marker is gone) if you don't have access to a Determinator.

Plugging and redrilling will not hurt it at all. I would strongly reccommend using a determinator to find the new PSA. When you plug and redrill and entire ball, especially if a slug was used in the original drill, the mass bias can change dramatically. I would plug it up, find the new mass bias, then punch it out to be sure you are getting the layout you want.

Good luck!

I find these two answers above dramatically different.

Any other/additional thoughts thoughts?

PS it is a thumb slug 1 3/8 that took the place of the MB spot.

Actually reig0199 is making a contradictory statement in his post.

First he said
"Plugging and redrilling will not hurt it at all. I would strongly reccommend using a determinator to find the new PSA"

Which is what I said in my post.

But then he contradicts himself when he says

"When you plug and redrill and entire ball, especially if a slug was used in the original drill, the mass bias can change dramatically"

Bowling this month had a whole article about this here

I do not view my post as having contradictory statements. If you plug the ball you can re drill it and use it, but in order to use it to its fullest potential and have the exact layout you want you need to know where the mass bias is.

If you are trying to achieve a very specific ball reaction or layout a mass bias change of as little as three quarters of an inch can result in a difference in ball reaction. The ball will be completely useable after plugging, but if you do not double check if the mass bias has changed with a determinator what you think your drilling is could be off.

Plugging and re-drilling a ball will not hurt it or make it unusable, but when re-drilling it you need to know where the mass bias is in order to have the most accurate drilling possible. If you do not find the new mass bias after drilling then you could be off.

Sorry for any confusion
