Sanity check - Cg not in line
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:38:26 AM »
I am left handed and considering purchase of an asymmetrical ball with a 2 inch pin where the Cg is approx 3/4 - 1 inch left of the line. If I remember correctly, the Cg out of line will impact potential placement of a weight hole, but should have little other effect.

- Is that a true statement?
- In general, is a Cg out of line to the left better for a lefty or righty?
- If I plan to lay it out with pin to the side of ring, PSA out at 30-45 degrees, use an IT, and prefer a thumb positive weight hole, will the out of line Cg cause an issue?

As always, thanks in advance

A lot of it depends on how much topweight is in the ball to begin with, and how you feel about weight holes.

 1. Yes, the location of the CG can impact the location of the weight hole. Probably will.

 2. In general, a CG out to the left is better for a righty. Easier strong psa placement.

 3. MAYBE, and I am inclined to initially say yes. Topweight will tell the tale on this one.

The CG being almost an inch left to start with means you are starting with instant side weight, and depending on how much you have, can dictate where to put the weighthole to make the ball "legal".

Then, when you shift it even further by putting the psa out at a 30-40 degree angle, you are going to end up with even more side weight.

IF THE BALL STARTS WITH LOW TOPWEIGHT, it will have less effect on the weighthole placement. If it has 3-4oz topweight, things might get problematic.

I'm going to assume that you understand that CG placement, especially on an asymmetric ball, is said to have much less effect than the psa placement. HOWEVER, the weighthole placement can have a big effect on overall post drilling spec numbers.

If you're a lefty, and you like strong psa placement, I would recommend using a ball that is either CG in line, or shifted to the right.

Not saying it can't be done, but it might be very hard with those specs if it is possible, and you don't need to make it any harder than it has to be.

Thanks Jug. That clears it up perfectly for me and is frankly such a well written analysis I think it should become part of the permanent knowledge base. I understand it completely now, and many thanks. I'm going to pass on this ball, even though it was the last 15# Warrior Elite I could find...

I think what Jug has written is a good analysis, however I have had good experiences with asymmetrics with CGs kicked to the left as a lefty. Two of my favorite balls have had this pin-cg-mb alignment.  However, they each had 3-inch pins and I used neutral p2'ish balance hole placements to get statics into check on them.

Lefty50, what is the top weight of the Warrior Elite and what conditions are you looking to use it on?

TW = 3.0 exact, and I always use P3-P4 weight holes to aid differential. I have had good luck with that. Wanted to use it @ Nats.

Yeah, I would pass if I wanted to go p3 or p4 to balance statics.  I'm also not a fan of short pins on asymmetrics in general - but that's personal preference and nothing else.
