Shorter Span

Anyone noted changes to their mechanics or anything about their game by reducing their span from the more old school stretched to a bit more pinched grip?

Generally speaking, and assuming proper pitches, a more relaxed span will help the bowler clear the thumb more cleanly.

I wonder if it'll lend to a bit more leverage as well. I'm speculating as I shorten or lengthen my grip now with no ball in hand, and attempt to roll my hand back. Seems like the shorter span will just add a bit more assistance to keeping the fingers below the imaginary middle line during release. Almost how 2 ganders can get sommuch leverage on the ball without the push back of thumbs lack of ability to bend all the way back.

There are several factors here, such as how your wrist is positioned (because the fingers will follow) and flexibility, etc, but experimenting a little gives you more "light" as you more forward.  We can learn just as much from our mistakes as the successes.

For example, over the years I've gradually added more forward pitch to my thumb hole with no negative effects that I can see, and I use much less grip pressure than I used to.  I don't have a long span, and I have a shorter thumb, which has allowed these changes.   Subtle changes can be the difference between striking out in the 10th and splitting...

I have gone in the opposite direction in my "old" age. I have gone back to a wider span along with a corresponding increase in reverse thumb pitch. I no longer have the flexibility in my bowling hand that I once had. By going to a somewhat wider span, I can now clear my thumb more consistently, even with the occasional "grab".

It is not a stretched span, but it is wider than it had been for years. I also decreased the reverse pitch in my fingers (now zero pitch) since I am an old school bowler who gets rotation not by collapsing the wrist at release, by by old fashioned finger leverage instead.

Everybody is different, but shortening my span causes me to do all sorts of bad things.

I get around the ball too early, top the ball pretty bad, and soon develop a bad case of chicken wing.

I always tell my driller, if he’s going to miss, then miss long. Little bit long I can live with, but short just feels terrible and gives me bad habits.
