Cyclone question.... aggressive layout.
« on: August 28, 2014, 05:36:40 PM »
I have been away from bowling for about 4 years.  In the past I've kept up with bowling technology, but obviously I have some catching up to do.  Keep that in mind when reading the below question.

My only ball right now is a Cyclone and I love it.  It hits well, gets some moderate length, turns fairly well, and did I mention it hits well.  I am throwing a 14# and it still drives through the pins like a beast..

I don't have a lot of revs.  It's not going to improve, and I cannot step up in weight.  One of the reasons why I came back to bowling was to stay active while battling a relatively minor but sometimes painful and annoying degenerative muscle problem.  It's working.

I need a bit more total hook in my game.  I don't know exactly what the angles are on my layout, but I went with a relatively passive layout.  That's all I can tell you.  If I were to drill up another Cyclone with an aggressive layout and adjust the surface appropriately, how many more boards could it cover?

I know it may sound crazy to you guys, but bear with me, I have my reasons.  I can get another Cyclone really inexpensive from my local shop, and the core and coverstock really seem to work for me.  For right now I really need to stick with the tried and true.

FWIW, I have always preferred mid-level, moderate performance balls.  This probably also has a lot to do with my desire to just stick with a Cyclone.

I've done similar things before.  At one time I was toting 4 balls around, 2 purple Rhino Pros and 2 Prohook Extremes.  At that time I was probably best-matched to the conditions around me more than most of my local peers.  I guess it is just a habit for me.

Sorry if I got a little talkative there.  Pain meds do that to me.  Any advice is appreciated.  Good luck on the start of the new league season guys.

The pro shop should be able to answer this question much easier than any of us on the interweb.
the key will be watching you throw a few shots and going from there

Drill another one and add surface...surface dictates how early the ball slows down and is allowed to change direction

i second adding another cyclone with surface and a stronger layout. another option is the cyclone GB which has an updated version of the GB10.7 solid cover and comes with surface from the factory. it is a limited run made specifically for a proshop in white plains, NY. www.richjacobsonbowling.com is the website to order the ball and rich is great if youd like him to drill it

Thanks for the replies guys.  I take it there is a bit of emphasis in the modern game on surface prep?

yes after the ball motion study came out the surface of a ball was found to account for about 70% of ball reaction. that is cover composition and surface texture (grit) so people are payinga lot more attention to it these days. especially since its a quick easy adjustment that can make such a big difference

I just lightly scuffed my out of box Cyclone pink blue gold with 3000.

It is 4.75 pin to pap and pin up.  I was unable to play and carry anywhere but straight up 9.

Now I have bow and recovery playing almost 3rd arrow to 9 and it finds its recovery point so much earlier and turns it into a real top hat killer with area.

It runs out of energy earlier in the set naturally.

When it reaches that point I shift to a similarly drilled higher rg, lower diff ball and it continues!

I love my new ball even more than my other new ball!  (the unscuffed original version).

My coach told m on a harsh wet dry top hat this would change everything.

really?  I thought I had heard that too..

I am just reporting my results with a factory cyclone which I had gotten the impression was the topic here.   For me the surprising item is how much the back end of the bow has been increased.  (As Carmen Salvino talks about in his Brunswick videos)The square up is well frankly the most I have seen on one of this brand of a pill and a real surprise to me.

Hope that clarifies why I mentioned it.  I don't expect that much from a cyclone.

Cyclone has one f EBI strongest covers...why would you NOT think it be that strong?

I love my new Cyclone and am thinking about another with different layout and change the finish to give me options. Don't need anything stronger with the 2 houses I am shooting in. I actually need something weaker for the breakdown/dry.

Not fond of the Powerhouse factory finish polish. One at 4000 grit sanded and one at 1000 grit sanded makes for a great 2 ball arsenal for most conditions!

One answer...

For JustRico,
I have seen not a ton of these balls but a good amount.  Most of them I have seen have not had a ton of back end.  Most had good midlane and not a ton of backend.  A poppy move when the factory shiny finish is on.

Most of the lefties I had seen with them were right close to the second arrow.  Most of the righties I have seen have been barely as deep as this 3rd arrow.

All of a sudden I cut slightly the gloss off with my wet 3000 pad and I am squaring up to the pocket in the back so hard there is no doubt they are off the back of the pit this on the left touching the 14 board at the arrows.  Until it runs out of energy on this slickish but low volume top hat it is mow them off the back high flush!  It surprised me I have not seen a lefty with this big of a controlled reaction with this ball.

As to gazoos comments, regarding Ebonite Factory Polish I do find it quite jumpy on a harsh fresh shot when out of the box and I have gone tp a different finishing solution for prepping this ball on the slickest rock hard old synthetics from a certain company!

Regards,

Luckylefty
