Black Widow or Storm Pyro?
« on: January 02, 2007, 01:52:55 PM »
Hey guys. New to the boards. I am just getting back into bowling after nearly 10 years of almost no bowling at all. The last time I bowled actively I was using a hand me down ball, which is the same ball I’m using today. Needless to say, the ball is old and doesn't have much action left. Upon doing some research and speaking with the local pro-shop, I am down to either buying a Black Widow or a Storm Pyro.

While the Black Widow seems to be a very popular ball, it is very intimidating to me. I am not used to such a powerful ball. The other thing that scares me is I tend to bowl quite a few games in one sitting. For instance tomorrow there is a lane that has $6 cover and 25 cent games. My friend and I will probably bowl 10 games a piece if not more. By game number 4 will I even be able to keep the thing on the right side?

I'm considering the Pyro only because the guy at the pro-shop said it's a good ball and will do a little better on dry lanes. Anybody know anything about this ball? The reviews seem to be OK but it doesn't seem nearly as popular as the BW.

A little background on me: I'm right handed, bowl a 170 average, about average speed, low to medium revs. Right now I'm standing right foot on the center dot throwing to about the 7 board.

Now I'm all for learning how to bowl all over again since I'm not in a league right now (planning on joining one soon), but the BW just intimidates the living hell out of me. Does the Pyro work much better on dry lanes than the BW?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks for reading my long winded post.

Mike

Pyro on DRY lsnes??? That's just plain misinformation. It's a particle ball for pete's sake.  I just sold my Pyro on Ebay. Although most people liked it according to the user reviews I thought it was the worst Storm product I'd ever bought (and that's saying a lot!).

The Pyro will match up better on medium to medium heavy conditions while the BW's sweet spot is light medium to heavy medium without a lot of carry down. Remember, the BW is a skid snap ball and the Pyro is an arcing ball. The BW scoots past the midlane and saves all its work for the backend.

HOWEVER (LOL)......the BW's coverstock is pretty versatile. I have one at 2000 Abralon that is more of a smooth arcing ball than skid snap. So, as with most equipment these days you can tweak the reaction through drilling layouts and/or coverstock changes to suit your game.

I'm really bias on this one, but I'd definitely go with the BW. Or, the PAIN (a heavy roller that takes coverstock changes very well).

If your lanes truly are on the drier side but not toast then I think the DOOM would suit your needs the best. It has a strong backend but because of it's pearlized coverstock is more controllable than the BW (it also is very versatile depending on what one does to alter the coverstock) Sorry for all the suggestions, but there's so much to choose from that in the final analysis you just have to do your research and then make a decision.
