Chunks taken out of CFI balls: still under warranty?
« on: February 20, 2018, 09:08:25 PM »

Not too happy about this one...

Went practicing with my son at a local but well known alley. Got assigned a line. Fine, no problem. We start bowling, and while I'm going more in depth with the fundamentals with my son, during my turn, I had this happen to my Scandal. So while being positive with my son, I'm not happy with this lane, and thinking that the problem was me. You know, first time, it's me; second time it's the ball, third time it's the house, right?

Well, first time was my Scandal, which my understanding is that something like this shouldn't happen with a CFI cover. But once again, I'm thinking I'm the problem. So I switch to my Ebonite Maverick. 3 frames later, the same thing happens, over the same area, on the same part of the lane.

So I'm not happy at all, try to avoid that area, and switch to my Scandal Pearl. Guess what? Same thing, same part of the ball: right over my track for all 3 balls.

I may be out of luck on the warranty for the Maverick, but anyone think this would be covered by the 3-year warranty on the Scandal and Scandal Pearl because of it being a CFI coverstock? Pictures coming shortly. I would have taken this straight to the pro shop in the alley, but they are an all-Storm shop, thanks to the previous owners owning it prior to taking a job at Storm HQ.

Any insights on this?

"I had this happen to my ball"

What happened?  You left that information out.  If the lane damages the ball it's the house responsibility,  it's not a manufacturer problem.

Yeah I quit going to one house just because I got a few small burn marks from the ball sit and spinning in the back of the lane.  If a piece was missing the first time no friggin way would I ever go back to those lanes.  If their machines are messing up CFI balls those lanes are probably not long for this world.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

I don't understand why you would think you are the problem if your ball gets a chunk taken out of it?  If one of my balls got a chunk out of it, I would inform the counter so that they are aware that there may be an issue with their equipment.  If it happened to a second ball or again to the first, I would again inform the counter and ask to be moved to a different pair.

And if it was a deep gouge, like the word 'chunk' indicates, the house should be repairing the ball.

Working on that. I had pictures attached, but the forum said the size was too big to attach. Trying that again now.

These happened on my track when my ball hit the lane. All 3 balls, at nearly the same point on the ball.

Thankfully, both youth coordinators for my son's league were there at the time and can vouch for what happened, plus the front desk and mechanic dressing the lanes saw the problem on the lane.

The problem I have here is that all three spots are on my track. If the house deems that this isn't damage, I'm out 3 balls or would need to get them all resurfaced, and all of them have less than 10 games on them each (I took major time off the last 2 seasons). To be out close to $500 for balls for damage the house doesn't claim isn't right. That's why I'm asking about the warranty. If they would be covered, I have only a couple of weeks left for the Maverick as I bought it a little less than a year ago, so it is coming up. The Scandal and Scandal Pearl have 3 years, so I'd be set there.

Finally got one attached. Here's the other two.

Again, they aren't really superficial, as they are on the track of all my balls thrown today, and as I said, First time has to be me. Second time, not so much. third time, that's a problem. And when you can see the fibers from the cover on the lane, that's when I started to wonder about the warranty.

Again, I did notify them of the problem, and seeing that there were two working there that can vouch for it happening, it looks like I'll be making another trip up there tomorrow to see what can be done.

Not covered under warning. That's the centers fault. If they don't fix or replace I'd be mindful of giving them future business.

Either a panel is high or the foul line is high and you set the ball short on the approach.

Damage caused by the bowling center is not a warranty issue.  You should have the mechanic notified as soon as you see damage to the first ball, not wait until you have damage on three.

As everyone else has said this is the alley's problem not the manufacturer. If you get a damaged ball stop then don't throw a second or third ball.

I can't tell how deep the gouges are in the photos if they aren't super deep should just be a matter of resurfacing the ball. which hopefully the alley would pay for.

I had This same thing happen , in the same house. It was in my Tuesday night league. My warrior Supreme got 1 chunk taken out. Then the next frame another. So I switched to my Warrior and the first frame a chunk was taken out of it too. The managers tried to blame me, saying I dropped the ball at the foul line. I have a witness to say I don't drop the ball at the foul line. The pro shop at this house half assed a repair job on my balls. They have big waves in the track. More bowlers in my league have had there balls damaged also.I have quit this league. I am now trying to get the owner of this house to talk to me about a fix. We will see.

Even if you did drop the ball at the foul line, it shouldn't take chunks out of it. What kind of lame response is that? Sounds like someone just doesn't want to fix an issue with their lanes and get off the hook fixing your balls.

Could be an issue with the underground ball return system.  I've seen similar marks/scuffs caused by the ball wobbling as it rolls through the underground return tunnel and scraping against the tunnel wall as it wobbles.  In my instance, the tunnel walls were concrete.

Why would u damage 3 balls, wasn't one enough.

The first thing to prove if the alley is the problem is to prove that the problem isn't the bowler. That means trying it again with another piece and hope that you get the same result. In this case, I did, plus was able to prove that the problem wasn't the bowler or the ball.

That proven, I have a legit case and can back up my claim that the lane was the problem and not the ball or the bowler.
