Are you still wanting the ball reaction that dominated bowling in the 80's and 90's? Well Hammer does and they have brought it back with their line of Hammer Urethane bowling balls. This time Hammer is building on their Urethane success with the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane ball. This ball has modified the popular light bulb core to create the LED core design and covered it with a Urethane Pearl cover and finished it with a 500 grit, then 1000 grit, and then 2000 grit Abralon pad. This combination offers incredible control the length of the lane on short oil patterns because you don't always need a violent reaction.

Color: Purple Pearl
Core: LED (modified for 14#)
Coverstock: Urethane Pearl
Finish: 500/1000/2000 Abralon
Reaction: Smooth Arc
RG: 2.65**
Differential: .015****
RG and Diff are based off of 15 lb. balls
Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Light Oil
FCC Rating: Total- 14.5, Finish- 9, Core- 2, Cover- 3.5

This ball is flat out amazing. This ball is not your typical urethane. It shapes significantly more than balls like the Black Hammer, Boo Yah and Pitch Black. It also shapes differently from the Pitch Blue. It reads the front part of the lane a little less than the solid urethane balls on the market and has more backend. It still isn't reactive, but it doesn't quit down the lane unless there is a load of carry down or the fronts have to be shot on a heavy oil condition. I throw this ball mostly on medium patterns, but is versatile enough to see some use on some longer patterns or shorter patterns. It holds surface better than most urethanes (less lane shine). Instead of only being in play when throwing the ball up the gutter, I have been able to go as deep as 5th arrow before the ball became too slow to carry efficiently. If you need a ball that is stronger down the lane than usual urethane while still emphasizing the earlier read, give this ball a look.

First I'm a senior bowler with slow speed and average revs.  I bought this ball to use on drier conditions and when lanes break down.  It's drilled with the pin about 4.5" from the PAP and about 1" over the ring finger.
First I'm a senior bowler with slow speed and average revs.

Tried the ball yesterday after a senior league had just finished.  Lanes were medium to dry.  The ball in box finish was just too strong for this condition.  To use it at all I had to move out to the 4th arrow which was not why I bought the ball.  After the proshop sanded it and added polish, I was able to move more right with my feet and play between 10 and 15 at the arrows.  With the surface change and moving to the right the ball worked very well., however, this was not why I got the ball.  I wanted it for drier conditions and, with my speed, I don't think it's going to work.  I think the only way I can use it is to consider it a medium condition ball (which I realy don't need as I have reactive balls for that) or have it re-drilled with a weaker set-up.  I'll try it again on a league day and see how it works with a little more oil.

PAP 5 9/16
Slightly Rev Dominant
Layout 90x6x20

After crossing with some guys who cannot stop to seem to throw the Purple Urethane in the past two years (You've probably seen him on tv) I finally decided to cave and see what the rage is all about.

I have been throwing a myriad of "black balls" almost exclusively in the past three years, with my ball up's going directly to a strong asymmetrical solid when I need to open up some angles. You might see that it is my preference to keep my angles in front of me as long as possible, while being "okay" with balls rolling out to control and manage lane play.

The difference with the Purple Pearl is that it is somewhat cleaner in the front. It saves up a little more energy compared to the other solid urethane products out right now. I find that this look to be a little more useful on higher scoring patterns that ask for players to keep their angles in front of them for most of the block. However, it is susceptible to over under looks, and that solid urethanes to be used to shut down the angles down even more into the pocket; when these conditions are seen.

I have four urethanes in my bag for the long tournaments, in case lane shine is in play when moving from pair to pair.

I must admit to having an infatuation with the Hammer Purple Pearl urethane.
First off, it is really, really pretty!
But it is what is does that makes it so special.

I am a Full Roller with low revs (110) and low ball speed (12 mph launch speed) a 90 degree axis rotation and zero tilt. I also have a 1940's style suitcase release.

It is difficult for me to match up well with a ball.
I have tried tons of balls with different layouts.
But when I got my Purple Hammer I was amazed.

The Purple is the ultimate control ball that still has amazing hitting power.
My game is based on accuracy. I don't cover boards. I just want to get the ball rolling on a straight course to the pocket and have it roll up and carry.
The Purple lets me do that.
I have had more 600 series with this ball than any other.
What is amazing about this ball is how super strong it is.
It really grabs the lane, but in the right place.
It actually has the strongest coverstock of any modern urethane ball.
It's cover is much stronger than even Hammer's Black Widow urethane.
But because the Purple has a super high RG 2.65 and super low Diff .015, the core allows a coverstock that strong to roll hard but still retain a ton of hitting power.
If you bring the surface up to 2000 you can stand right and go up the boards, but if you bring it down to 1000 or even 500 you can move in and swing it.
And if you have a big hand you can do anything with it, just like Jacob Butturff does.
I mean he can use the Purple on virtually any pro pattern!

Here is a video of me using my 15 lb Purple with 3 3/8 Leverage Layout. You can see how much control and power it has for a throwback like myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQFSatjwOfY

With arguably THE hottest urethane ball on the market, I felt it was important I add this piece to my arsenal. Mine is drilled with a 4” pin to pap to help get the ball to flare a bit more for me with my medium rev rate.

I originally had a Black Urethane, but it had a tendency to hook a tad too early for me. This purple urethane is a much better compliment to it in my opinion. It certainly goes a tad longer and has a bit more controlled continuous motion downlane for me. While I’m still getting use to it, I am confident this is the go-to starter ball for shorter patterns when you need to control the early hook before carry down occurs.

Just got one yesterday. Layed out with traditional stacked leverage.   Tried it on a house that is very good  for urethsne.  Bowled a game with my pitch blue, and got a good reaction but had to adjust gor carrydown at 9 board.  Switched to the purple pearl, and was immediately able to make a 2 and1 move in toward the oil.  Tip and shape was not the much different than pitch blue, but it handled carrydown much better, and carry down was non factor.  Rolled 10s out even when I tugged it a noard.  Ball actually jumped high off the dry when I let it leak an extra couple of boards out.

I am looking forward to trying it on the Wolf next week

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I am an old school Full Roller.
I recently went down to 14 lbs in ball weight and wanted to try an experiment with another Purple Hammer. The Purple in 14 lbs is no longer a two-piece ball and I was worried that it might have less hitting power than 15 lbs.
The short answer: Hard to tell!

On this Purple I put the old Axis Layout, pin directly in PAP, so I could use the ball with my slower speed from the right, or up the boards. I was afraid it might be too weak with the Axis Layout. Wow was I wrong!
The ball actually became even stronger with the Axis Layout.
It is cleaner through the front of the lane but rolls more heavy and continuous in the back with even more drive! I am also seeing about one inch of flare, which is about the max the Purple will get with any layout, yet why is the ball flaring with an Axis Layout??? Only the Purple knows why, but hey, now I have the best of both worlds, the control of the Axis Layout with full Purple dynamics.

I have used this ball now for some time and I am amazed with the versatility I can get on house shots with it with this Axis layout.
If the lanes are flooded, I can get far right and go down and in.
If the oil is medium, I can go up the boards.
If the oil is light, I can get left and push it right and it just comes back in a strong continuous arc.

The proof is in the pudding as they say.
Here is a video of me using the Purple Hammer Axis.
Watch how clean and continuous it is:

When Hammer announced the re-release of the Purple Hammer everyone questioned whether it wood be as good as the first rendition. The short answer is YES!!!!!

Hands down the best performing urethane ball on the market. The Purple gives you controlled reaction that only urethane can with hitting power unmatched by any urethane ball on the market.

I have thrown other urethane including the original Black Hammer and Brunswick U-Motion and the hitting power of these do not remotely compare to the Purple.

The Purple Ball is BACK!!!! This ball has been my go to on short sport patterns! This has allowed me to control my angles and find the pocket! It is about 2-3 boards stronger than the original in my opinion! If you are the tournament bowler, this is a must have in your bag!

With all the hype about this ball the past few years I picked up the re-release.

I understand this has been and great ball for many people. But I've thrown it on 42 foot Mark Roth pattern and house shot. I think I'm just going to ebay this ball.

On house shot I came to practice with Purple Hammer, Badger Infused and U-Motion in the bag.

Badger Infused let me play track area fine. U-motion, had to play a little more outside (that ball needed a little more dry boards to make a good turn). Purple hammer was a hook at my feet reaction. In order to get it to the pocket I had to release it at board 32, hit 21 and then after going through so much oil, 5 pins.

In comparison I started playing 25th board to 15 with Badger Infused.

This was not the first shots on Purple Hammer. I know it hooks a lot first few shots out of the box.

I used it day before on Mark Roth pattern. I just don't know the point of a ball like this on such a pattern. I could get it into pocket fine through the oil. At which point the urethane was too weak and leave weak hits. If I moved outside, it would hook at my feet and go Brooklyn.

This ball really is not working for me because of my release. I don't use my thumb, over 400 Revs (true rev rate, at release) and about 2 degrees of axis tilt. So my ball wants to hook early. Added that with such and aggressive urethane and it's a hook at my feet disaster.

I have other "urethane" balls: Badger Infused, U-Motion, Fast Pitch, Fever Pitch, and and original Natural. I can use all of those on appropriate conditions. But for my game I consider Purple Hammer unusable. It hooks so early, that it makes me feel I really have to muscle it, which leads to poor shots.

On heavy volume I would never use this, as I can just grab a reactive ball. If I need a controllable ball on medium flat pattern, well then the Badger Infused is everything people make this Purple Hammer out to be.

Since it was over-hooking from outside on 42 Mark Roth pattern, I can't foresee using this on a short pattern.

The only ball I've ever thrown this is comparable to is the Pitch Black. A ball I also ebayed. In comparison the Purple Hammer is probably a tad longer, but stronger and more continuous.

I can see how this ball works for other players. But with my high rev rate and high track, this ball is a total disaster. At least I didn't really need it to fill a gap in arsenal. It was more of a toy I bought b/c it's supposed to the greatest urethane ball ever.

The Purple is the perfect addition to any arsenal that is looking for the control of urethane. The Purple is very controllable and hits hard when there is friction. I think this ball will perform best on shorter flatter patterns. This Ball is great for the tournament bowler!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? The Purple Hammer is one of the best urethane balls of all time. Very smooth and very controllable on every single pattern I have thrown it on. I will admit that I wasn’t a big fan of urethane prior to punching up this ball, but once I did, I needed three more. It won’t over react and it won’t under react. This ball lets the performance do the talking and I would say all the Trophies, Titles, and thousands of dollars this ball has racked up should be enough to get it in your bag.
