Title: Bowling on the ToC pattern
Post by: Raven829 on December 17, 2007, 07:59:28 AM
Tonight is position round in my PBA Experience league.  We are bowling on the ToC shot.  I hade a very limited opportunity to practice on it last night (15-20 mins).  I'm looking for some input feedback on what kind of layouts/surfaces I should bring with me as well as how to possibly play the shot. I'm actually more curious about the transitions than anything else.  From what I saw, the head oil went away extremely fast due to everyone throwing balls with a lot of surface.  This made it seem as though the backends were even tighter than they already are.

If anyone is curious, I will post my results when I get home.  I've been bowling really well as of late in this league as well as on our THS.  I'm looking forward to the challenge.

From my experience with the TOC shot, once you break it down, it's the easiest of them all.  It's really tight to start out with, and you have to play very direct, but just create a track, then you can use just about whatever you want to.  Just have to chase the head oil left.  An aggressive surface isn't the answer once you get out of practice and are trying to score.  Take something that rolls and that doesn't change direction sharply on the backend.  Once you wear a track in, you should be good to go.

Just play straight. Nothing is going to move on a real ToC shot. Maybe a shark pattern but not a ToC.

We bowled on the TOC 50-footer last year.
I used a 400-grit Uranium solid in practice and went straight up 13 with my normal speed. This combination barely touched the head pin for me. Once the bell rang, I switched to the Carbide+ and slowed my feet down considerably. I moved left 2 on the approach and began to target the 14 board at the arrows. This kept the breakpoint the same. There was just enough pop on the backend to get to the pocket. The trick was actually hitting the target with consistent speed and release. The shot was slightly easier as the night went on.

Well, I did alright.  256-220-160.  It was my high series of the year.  I was pointing it the first game and a half until I moved 20 boards left and still had a good look.  Then everything started hooking at my feet and I was lost.  I missed 3 easy spares the last game out of frustration.  Oh well.

sorry...just plain wrong....Hampster has it right..if you read the transition right it's an easy pattern to hit.

Good bowling!

Most of the PBA patterns will play very differently depending on the lanes, the lane man/machine that lays down the pattern, and who is on the pair with you.  Anyone who says X will work and Y and Z won't is just blowing smoke.  Too many variables in the lanes, the patterns, and the bowlers to make that kind of definitive statement.

On the other ones, I'd agree with you on that, but 50 feet of oil is a basic straightforward kind of pattern.  How, how quickly, and where it breaks down will lend itself to house characteristics, but in 3 games, more than likely, the house characteristics won't have much time to come into play.

Raven, did you try lofting when the heads were going?  A good 5 feet of loft isn't too hard to pull off and makes a world of difference on a shot that's tough laterally when you're trying to keep a track area longer.

This pattern is ridiculous. I bowled on it when i went down to the Kegel training center in Florida. You cannot swing the lane, and you cannot point it at the pocket from an outside angle. There is only one way to score on the TOC shot, and that is to play the middle of the lane and keep your line as tight as possible. When i bowled on it, i had to play the 20th board at release and the 20th board at the breakpoint. Basically, i had to make my breakpoint the 3 pin, and hope for the best. Theres no doubt that the ball will indeed hook in the back end...its just that the amount of hook will be very minimal. I also do not recommend using something super dull. Id go with something that is a strong resin with a 1000 abralon finish, that is the only thing that worked for me. I also did use my The Buzz at OOB condition, which is something like 800 Polished, and that worked well too but I had to be much more accurate. The strong resin that i used was my Road Hawg, drilled pin below my fingers.

Heres a pic to the two balls i used.:

Also, i have a video from Kegel which shows i think 2 shots on that TOC, heres the link to that:
