Title: Bowling ball spinner
Post by: bucsfan713 on March 07, 2008, 12:03:23 AM
I was thinking about getting a bowling ball spinner, however, I don't know much about them.  What is a good brand, size to get.  This will be for my own personal use at home.  Where can I get one from?  How do you use one?  Thanks.

Vertex makes a good one for personal use. They are just about all over the net or you can order from the company, I believe.

I got a Vertex 1/2 hp for Xmas this year.  I have had a lot of fun playing with equipment surfaces and seeing what works best for me.  I would suggest a full order of diffrent grit Abralon pads and also a high gloss polish.  I am using Brunswick High gloss and Rough Buff and I just got my sample of Bean's Secret Sause I am going to put on my TNV for 2nd shift league tonight.

Would it be better to go with the 1/3 HP or 1/2 HP by vertex?  Also, what is the difference between using Abralon pads and scotchbrite pads?

I have used the 1/2 HP and it rocks.  Definitely get one and watch as your bowling balls stay brand new from week to week.

I would go with the 1/2 HP.  You can put more pressure on the ball without slowing down the spinner.  Abralon and Scotchbrite do pretty much the same thing.  There is more variation in grits with Abralon

Abralon pads allow free flow of moisture throughout the pad, allowing it to be a little bit cooler.

The 1/2HP Vertex from Buddies is the best deal going right now.  I have it and love it.

bucksfan713...

Another brand is the Donkee. They have a 3/4 HP and 1/3 HP to pick from.
I have the 3/4 HP model that I have used for years. I recommend the 3/4 HP.
They have a website and you can but direct from them. The Donkee has two
speeds but most people don't use the high speed that often. They offer a
splash guard and foot pedal as options. Most buyers buy the splash guard.
The Vertex is good also. I am not pushing either brand but you have options.

Thanks for all the replys.  If I can get a 1/2 HP vertex for $225 shipped, is that a good deal?

Absolutely.  They don't show up for sale much on eBay or here and $225 shipped is cheaper than Buddies.

Well worth it.  Definitely get it if you are thinking about it.  I think everyone should have one if they are into fast and easy ball maintenance and the possibility tweaking things on their own.

I've had a Vertex 1/2 HP for about a year now, it definitely is one of the best investments I've ever had when it comes to our sport.  That's a good price, and I use mostly Abralon pads for my equipment, polish for the wifes' stuff, I have it setting in a 73 qt plastic container made by Sterlite that I picked up at Target for about 10 bucks, even comes with a lid.

does  having a spinner increase your average, and also
help your spare pick-up?

Only if you know how to manage the surface of your equipment and how the lane conditions and surface of the ball interact.  If you know, for instance, that you're going to be bowling on a heavier shot on synthetic lanes for a tournament, you might take a ball or two and give them more surface (lower grit sanding) because that heavy shot is probably going to carry down and the extra surface will help them pick up a good roll.  But if you know that the shot will be more modest volumes on wood, which will generally be a higher friction surface, less surface may be more called for.

Picking up spares, probably not gonna make all that much difference.

I have a Donkee and you can use it as a paint shaker.  Works ok now for about 4 years old.  Would I recommend it?  Pnly because it is cheap.

Well, I believe I am going to go with the 1/2 HP from vertex.  Now, I just have to come up with the money.  Wish the military paycheck was bigger.  I am really looking forward to getting this
