Title: Effect of positive side weight?
Post by: leftyinsnellville on May 29, 2009, 12:41:40 AM
I picked up a Jazz for a song and after drilling it has exactly 1 ounce positive side weight. (I think that's the term used to describe extra weight on the same side as your pap.)

Before I drill a balance hole, I thought I'd ask the experts...what's the effect on reaction of positive side weight?

Stated differently.  What would be the difference in reaction between two balls with identical drillings, but one has positive side weight of 1 ounce and the other has only 1/4 ounce positive sideweight with a weight hole drilled on pap?

AFAIHL
Because there's no true core inside the Jazz, the effect should be somewhat to very much like that of a traditional pancake core: the more positive, the more length and backend, the less positive, the earlier and less backend snap.

How much you will see depends more on your eye and the amount of weight moved and your release. The more revs and the slower your ball speed, the more you SHOULD see. The less revs or the higher your ball speed, the less difference you SHOULD see. The sharper your eye, etc. etc.

I forgot to add this:
Negative weights (side, finger, top) in/on pancake cored balls will cause the track to rise closer to the finger and thumb holes. Positive weights will cause the track to lower slightly. Only danger is for people who track high to begin with and need/want negative weights.

Thanks Charlest.

What does "AFAIHL" mean?

As an aside, if you like the reaction you are getting, you should be able to place a weighthole ON your pap to insure the static legality while having minimal effect on the reaction.

If you need more flare, you can put a weighthole in a place to increase flare, and if you need less, you can do that as well.

Here is a link to a couple of videos about the effect weightholes can have on a ball.

Agree.

I don't think this concept applies to pancake cores and the extra flip blocks in odd positions, like this, and the Power Groove, and the Tornado.
