Title: Colossus
Post by: admin on December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM
Colossus has a radical new core design which produces more overall hook. It's a ball that revs up sooner while maintaining axis rotation, allowing the ball to continue through the pins. The Gripper EF coverstock's easy adjustability makes it simple to control the amount of hook that you desire. It reacts to lane friction immediately and accurately. It's all the hook you'll ever need.

Aver RG's: 2.526

Differential: 049

Flare Potential: Large

Cover Stock: GriPpeR EF (enhanced friction)

Core Type: MOtion Tuned Free Form

Core Dynamics: Strongly Enhanced Mass Bias

Ball Structure:Single Density Core, Dual Shell

Factory Finish: 500 Compound

Rather than tell you how I did mine, I’ll give you my observations so far.

This is the hottest ball around the area.  This is an easy revving ball (easy to control), yet still pops on the backend – very unusual - the first of it’s kind that I have seen.  Most balls have been given to players that have higher than average ball speed and medium to little or no wrist action.  One player with a strong hand can go coast-to-coast just touching it with scotch-brite over the box finish.  Don’t be afraid to go with strong layouts and surfaces, this ball skids better than you would think with an aggressive particle cover and dynamic core on good head oil.  Just for the hell of it, we took one for a 19+ ball speed player to 320 grit, 3 3/8” 75 degree layout for an anticipated flood in a tournament and he whacked ‘em.

For those people who want to take a chance on a GREAT ball that doesn’t have Columbia or Brunswick stamped on the side, give this MoRich monster a try.  (By the way, Columbia manufactures this ball for MoRich, so expect the same high quality standards as your Columbia stuff).

I think this will impact the ball market like the Danger Zone did when it was released.  Thanks Mo for everything you promised us in the literature, and more.

Ok, at the center I work at we have now sold four of these balls.  Two to people with a hard time getting the ball to hook and the other to guys that wanted to finish out the arsenal.  The two that had problems with hook, don't have a problem anymore, one of them actually needs to switch balls after the fifth game or so.  I will post an additional review once the two that were trying to fill out their arsenal have some frames under their belt with these.  This ball is a 10, no doubt about it.

I had never seen a Morich ball in action and was a little hesitant about buying the Colossus, but after reading the reviews on this site I decided to buy one.  I drilled the ball for max backend (high track) based on the drillings found at morich.net.  Out of box the ball goes much longer than you would think, and hits the pins harder than any ball I have seen.  Even on less than perfect shots, messengers were flying around to leave no pins standing.

I scuffed the cover to 400 grit to use the ball on heavy oil and was not disappointed.  This ball would make a nice arc to the pocket where my Ebonite Dominator just could not make the turn.  You don't need to have a lot of hand to throw this monster... let the ball do the work.  THIS IS A MUST HAVE BALL FOR ALL STROKERS.

If you are looking for the hit of a ball thrown by Robert Smith, but don't have his hand (Nobody does!!!) this ball is as close as you are going to get.  10 out of 10

I just got in my MoRich Colossus a few days ago. I had it drilled for med-high revs for medium track players and for maximum ball hook and flare(pin 3 3/8" away from pap and mass bias 5" away from pap)hadnt used it until today in a adult/youth tournament. WOW! What a ball. The lanes were flooded. I was happy to have this ball on this day. My dad was embarrassed because he couldnt get his ball to finish and my ball was. This ball truly is all the hook you will ever need. It doesnt just hook more then any ball i have ever used it hits harder then any ball i have ever used or seen. If you are one of those people who hates 10 pins like me, you will no longer have trouble with them. This ball hits so hard once in while you will leave a solid 9 though. I was light on the head pin several times and cant remember one time that i was that i didnt get a strike. even if you did leave something solid messengers would be flying all over the place knocking them over. If you have trouble with not having enough hook and not enough pin action this is your ball. I give this a solid 10 out of 10 no doubt this is the best ball have ever thrown.

I just got my colossus 2 days ago an I had a chance to throw it this afternoon,(11/18/01).  I got this one used but was only played for 2 games by a regional pro in Glendale.  I won't mention his name but I do have a message for him;  "bad move dude!"  This ball is a monster!  I'm just a medium revs, medium speed bowler yet with the colossus,  I'm throwing it like a seasoned veteran.  I used mo's drilling pattern for sharp breakpoint  for high track players.  With ths drilling,  I am able to stand on the 28th board and throw it on the 5th.  This ball makes an awesome turn. Scored a 204 on it the first time,  then 268 and 232.  That was a bowling first for me..=)

To all bowlers still seeking for the right ball for them,  give this ball a try.  Oh yeah,  one word of advise; LAYOUT.  It's imperative that you know your PAP.  That's the only way you can make this ball work for you.  Make sure your driller know's where it is.  I've seen some drillers ignore the mass bias on some balls, thinking it was not important.  They couldn't be more wrong..=)

I've gotten some comments from other reviewers from ths site, regarding the RC or the mass bias indicator.  Wel,  here it is: In any ball from any manufacturer, if the ballhas a mass bias indicator,  the c.g. location is not much of a factor,  as long as it's in the right "zone."  The mass bias indicator's are known by several names.  In Mo-rich balls,  it's the RC or reaction center.  In Storm balls, it's caled the MC2,  Faball,  it's the hotspot.   As you can see it's just a different name,  same animal..=)  As far as i can tell,  only mo-rich has a drilling layout with the c.g. zone and has a precise measurement of the distances between mass bias, pin and PAP.  Perhaps I should also clear up the c.g.ZONE.  It's that specified "area" on the ball in which the c.g. should be located  after thye ball has been drilled.  It's really driller friendly.  Just log on to the mo-rich website,  it''l clear things up.=)

2-3" pin.  Drilled with the pin next to the ring finger, (so close it is touching the finger insert.)  The cg is kicked out to the right and the star is just to the right and below the thumb.

Bowling on a sport condition that is pretty flooded.  Averaging around 175 but have not shot above 150 the first game this year.  Have not shot below 185 the third game this year.  So i knew i needed a heavy oil ball to clear the way for the extreme choas to start bombing the pocket.

I decided to pick up this ball for my problem and it is absolutely a beast.  The middle of the lane it starts to rev up and it arcs hard into the pocket.  It carries everything and hooks thru the pins.  A powerful arc without any over under, very perdictible.  Shot 212 with this ball the first game this week.

Know when to stop using this ball because by the start of the second game it really started to burn up due to lack of oil.  Shot a 155 but now i know when to swich.  Followed up with the extreme and shot 195.

Greatness

Well, after reading all the positive reviews on this ball, I got myself one. I wanted it drilled according to the high track-specs, but my pro shop screwed up and drilled it like every other ball they drill. Tried it out and was disappointed and attributed the problem to the drilling error. Not giving up on this ball, I took a green scotchbrite to the ball and stripped off the factory polish. The next day on my league I threw back-to-back 246 and 245! Patience is the key, and once I realized what this ball could do, BINGO! Knocks out pins like a claymore mine!!!!

Purchased the ball on 1/11/02 and couldnt wait to throw it!  I was using a Thunder Storm and was not getting pin carry and wanted something that would hook more.  I throw the ball pretty hard and it was hard finding a ball that would hook.  Well I have found one!!!  This ball is a hook monster and is very consistant!  In the 3 games I have bowled, I didnt have to move at all and only missed the pocket twice, my fault!  Really wouldnt carry the 10pin, but changing my angle into the pocket and getting use to the ball will fix that!  I just Love this ball!   I had ball drilled for strong mid-lane hook and a continuous arc to the pocket and it did exactly that.  It rolls nice and when you hit the pocket, pins fly everywhere!  This is a great ball even at the hefty price!  I shot a 620 the first night with it and could have been easily a 700, if I can only pick my spares and the 10pin would fall!! LOL!!!!

Well where do I start?!  I had this ball drilled during league play since I was looking for something with a little more umph in the middle of the lane. The layout was the factory suggested layout for medium revs and medium to high track. I was in the third game of my series and started 4 boards left of where I was rolling my Trauma ER and hit 6 out of the last 7 to pull out a 233. Well I didn't stop their. My tuesday league at a different house, and a more down and in shot and the ball was perfect for the edge of the oil... 233, 269, 248! And I'm between a 195 and 200 average at 3 different houses. The ball hits hard and rolls sweet! I guess that shows the equipment has gotten to good, but only if drilled by a good pro shop guy or gal. I would recommend this ball to just about anyone, except somebody who has lots of revs because it really snaps on the back end.

Take care,

James

This review is for the Peral Colossus.  WOW I tried using the minotaur and had very little luck with the drilling so my local pro shop put me in the peral colossus.  What a ball I have it drilled at about 2 o'clock 1 1/2 inch above my ring finger with 1/2 ounce of side, this ball hits like a truck.  I am an average bowler. (190's)  I expect that to increase very quickly.  Did not fare real well right out of the box on league night shot 550.  The nice part is that the scores continued to get better once I figured out what this animal could actualy do.  The next  day I went back to the lanes to play a bit more, shot 690.  No practice used two lanes just like league.  Made two a two board adjustment after the first ball and ran the next 8.  if it wasn't for the pure tap 8 pin in the tenth there is no doubt it would have been a 280.  They say this ball goes four feet longer and it does.  the nice thing is that it is pretty versitile.  Have not seen what it can do on flooded back ends but not to worried I have plenty of room to play with and this ball has a great transition.

Just got my Colossus and just shot it for the first time in league. First impression...WOW! This ball hits 2 tons! I am a tweener with medium revs and medium speed but this ball makes me look like a cranker.

The ball is drilled usings Mo's sharp breakpoint for medium track players (me). The pin is about 1/2 inch from my ring finger in about the 2 O'clock position. Balance hole on the intersection of the VAL and ML (pitched away). Ball has been dry scuffed with burgundy scotch brite.

The condition was a second shift typical house shot with a slight bumper out at the first arrow. I was swinging the ball out over second arrow. My mark never changed although I did have to move my feet a board or so every five frames. This ball is extremely agressive but I was still able to use it all three games. I found the Colossus hits extremely hard on slightly light hits so I tried to keep it a little light. Dont get me wrong, this ball will crush the rack on solid shots, but I liked the way it was carrying light. The Colossus mixed the rack like it had been hit from all sides! I have never experienced so many deadly scouts with my other equipment. My teammates are seriously considering getting Colossus' after seeing the shear power mine has. This is my first MoRich ball and it wont be my last!

Thanks for reading,
Jon

I couldn't wait to get this ball! But now I cannot wait to sell it.
I like the way it hits, but this ball does not hook like advertised. My Reaction Roll outhooks this ball by atleast 6 boards.
I think I may try o shine it just to see wha it will do. But I am very disappointed

To excaliber:  It's nice to know that you're giving this ball another try.  You said it's not hooking well?  Bear in mind this ball is very bowler specific.  Your PAP measurement should be known by your driller first and foremost.  You just can't go ahead and drill this ball just like brunswick balls..=) ie.  c.g. on center grip or pushed out,  pin over/under ring finger etc....etc.  With this ball,  c.g. is not very important.  You just have to place in a certain zone.  Consult mo-richs' drill sheet for a better explanation. GOOD LUCK!!!

After reading all the hype about how much this ball hooks, I decided to drill one of these "bad boys" up.  Keep in mind that I throw the ball pretty hard with a little bit better than a medium hand, which isn't too bad for an old man...anyway, touched it up with a bit of scotch brite and expected the ball to go coast to coast on a regular house shot.

To my dismay, I had to slow the ball down to get it to flip and turn with any carry authority.  Sure, I was swinging it (standing 30 and hitting out to 7) but this ball was to outdo anything on the market! My intent was to maintain my normal speed with the early roll this ball was to provide.  To make a long story short, I ended up having my nephew, Ryan Burch (it's a matter of time before you start reading about this young man), hit the polish to about a 1000 before the next league the following night.  I was convinced that if I did not get a better reaction with it polished, it was going to my "exit" arsenal....

I ended up with a 787 series the very next outing and must admit, a couple of those hits were the strongest crunch shots I had ever rolled.  I had messengers coming from both directions!  The drawback was that I had to slow my footwork and hold the ball lower starting out to maintain the minimum speed I could generate to get the best breakpoint down the lane.  I always felt that adjusting your speed is the hardest thing for a bowler and I had to do this to take advantage of this polished ball.  But, if you are disciplined to do this, then you will love this ball.  At the same time, if you're a very high rev bowler, don't get gun shy thinking that this ball is "too" much ball for you.  You will be pleasantly surprised.

We have had a recent addition to our lanes lately, OIL.  The Mo-Rich Colossus seems to
be the remedy.  Pin 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 from axis, mass bias kicked past VAL, balance hole per
drilling instuctions. ( I pitched the balance hole away from grip center 1 1/4" as suggested by
Mo in BTM) This seems to be about a 30 degree drilling if you use the degree method.
You will want to start with a ball with less than 3 oz top weight to achieve ABC legal weight
balance.  This drilling seems to help everyone get easy revs with tons of FLARE!  Surface
prep is critical.  Start with factory polish and adjust accordingly.  Make small adjustments,
as each step seems to add to much more flare.  I have only been able to go as far as grey
scotch brite on any of the balls that I have drilled(about 15 or so).  This aggressive drilling
never seems to quit as long as you have some oil up front to help hold the ball on line towards the
breakpoint.
Bottom line, find some oil, and have some fun.

I have this ball drilled 1 n 1/2 inches from the pin. Let me tell you this ball is worthless. With the way I throw the ball I can usually throw anything. I average 215-220 and if I would throw this ball I would average 170. This ball hits like a marshmellow, a powder puff well i guess you get the point. If this company wants to stay in bussines they nedd some help.

I do agree that every one is entitled to their own opinion, so heres mine. I disagree with the last couple of reviews. I have found my Colossus to be every thing MoRich says and more. I have bowled with other equipment but nothing out hooks or out hits my Colossus. It will carry all ten from just about any angle and carries off hits extremely well.

There is only so much the ball can do, most of how well a ball performs comes from the bowler. I have found that this ball likes to be just rolled. If I hit up or rip through the ball it doesnt get into the proper roll entering the pocket. This is the key to this ball scoring well! Let the ball do the work like you are supposed to and the Colossus will dominate all! Dont be afraid to adjust the surface either. These two things cannot be ignored.

People who whine about a ball not scoring well are just using the ball as an excuse for their lack of skill. I'm not trying to start an argument, but different bowling balls match up with different conditions. It is up to the bowler to make the correct match. The day there is ONE ball that works on EVERY lane condition, for EVERY bowler is the day I'm going to quit bowling!

I bought this ball used of ebay. Its the best ball that I have
ever owned. I'm a 190 bowler in two leagues. This ball is at its
best when you just roll it. Depending on the style of bowler you
are you might want it dull or shiny. It will cover all mediums.
Adjust your speed and let the core of the ball do all the work.
When this ball comes out of its spin and starts to roll its
pretty and it continues through the pins. Downside is throw it
to hard and you get corner pins. Carries light hits best. It has
a strong arc and will come back from anywhere.

FWIW.

I have to agree with bowler guy.  I have been throwing my colossus for a couple of months now and it's still my best goto ball.  So far no so called "tec" death on it despite the fact that i've had 100 or so games on it.  It still hooks and hits with the same power as the day I got it. ( Which I think is quite impressive since I did get it used from a pro here in Glendale.)  =)

To Pedro:  Are you sure it's drilled correctly?  Is the Balance hole (if any) placed at the intersection of your VAL with the line drawn from the center of the grip?  Was your PAP taken into consideration when you got it drilled?  I'm afraid this is a very bowler specific ball,  and I don't mean style.  The PAP is very important for this ball mainly because of the strongly enhanced Mass BIas,  just like all MO-Rich balls.  Dtermine your "EXACT" PAP then get the ball re-drilled.  I'm sure that will fix it.

This ball is awesome.  Carry is tremendos.  If you hit the pocket they're all falling down.  Wicked backends and does exceptionally well on heavily oiled lanes.  Haven't seen death of this particle ball yet and it has about 40 or so games on it.

Follow up review

After about 30 games this ball just started to suck really bad.  On medium to heavy oil the ball would hook way too early.  On heavy oil the ball would not find a consistent break point, kept going too long.  I dont know what it is but no coverstock maintence would help.  No polishing would help the medium shot and no sanding would help it on oil.  Different drill patterns wouldnt work either.  It would always skid into the 3 on oil or burn up on lighter heavy oil.  It is now gone.

Greatness

NOTE:This review is for the Colossus PEARL, not the solid black. Sorry for any confusion.

I got this ball about a month ago, and I took it in to my local pro shop owner and he put it on the JayHawk ball spinner and found the mass bias. I asked him to drill it to hook across any condition, and it does just that. The pin is about 1" to the right of my ring finger insert. There is no weight hole, I keep it clean and polished at all times and hooks predictably every time. I found that when this ball gets dull it loses its snap and drive. I have used this ball for flooded conditions and sport conditions and it works well, but when its dry you need to put this away. Great ball.

This is my ball of the year. Got the ball in September and used it all year.  Had it rejuvenated once to get some of the oil out about 2/3 through the season.  Drilled with the max drilling from the Mo-rich drill sheet.  All I can say is awesome kept a 220 average and shot 2 300's 2 -299 and 3 sets over 780.  Ball carries well light, trips 4's high and when it hits flush devastation. Very player friendly.  Highly recommend this one.

The first time I threw this, it never moved for me
at all. Today, I got a hunch to redrill this ball and
am glad I did. I drilled it differently than the drill
sheet suggests, I have a 4 1/2" x 45 deg. drill pattern
with the weight hole at 5 1/2" on my PAP. Pin is located
4 o'clock from my ring finger just below it. I didn't
know what to expect when I threw this ball with the new drill
since the ball hadn't worked for me before. Went out on
freshly oiled pair of lanes. Stood 25 threw over 15 to about 8
and back. WOW!! Struck the first 4 shots. So then I moved a little
right, 17 to 10 to 6 and BOOM....next 3 in a row. Got me thinking
a little bit. My last couple of shots I was playing around a
little, Stood 40 over 20 to 10 and BOOM...Stood 40 over 25 and BOOM,
Then I went to the extreme outside, straight up playing a little
bender, 10 to 5 to 3 and finished out the 300 game. All I have to say
is I'm glad I went to my hunches and drilled this little secret
up. Hopefully, others can experience what I just have. This ball
will always be in my bag from now on. A 10 out of 10.

Last winter, I purchased both the black and the pearl Colossus balls by MoRich.  The pearl is drilled label while the black is drilled leverage.  The pearl has great length through the heads and has a surprisingly strong finish at the pins.  The black reacts to the lane a lot earlier than the pearl and explodes the pins.  I use them as a 1 –2 combination.  Rarely do I find a situation where I change to the black.  I just continue to make hand/release adjustments to gain or reduce hook power.  These balls react to my various releases.  In the past I carried 8 balls to league and tournament play.  I now take these two, a plastic spare ball and my Minotaur, leverage.  A nice all round combination of performance.  I grade this series of balls at a 10.

2nd review of this ball.

Drilled 4 1/2 X 45 deg. pin lower right of ring finger.
This ball is soo strong, that after first game, it leaves
ringing 10 pins all the time no matter what type of moves
I make. 2 and 1, 3 and 1, 3 and 2. Shot 279 first game with
it, second left 5 straight solid 10's and a 1 solid 9 pin. So,
after I got done bowling, I thought I should drill up the
pearlized version, the Colossus Pearl same drill pattern. Second
set out, shot 225 with two solid 10's in the 10th frame of game one.
Not being stubborn, I switched to the pearlized Colossus and this
ball did just the trick. Carried the stubborn 10 out everytime. Shot
2nd and 3rd game 221 and 256 respectively. Great combination for
MoRich and if you get them, you won't be dissapointed.

colossus pearl - I'm an average speed tweener with decent hand.  I purchased this ball used (only 14lb) drilled to go long.  Lane condition was light oil.  I'm going back tonight to get a fresh oil condition.   Shot a 238 and 258, I don't know who was more surprised me the pro shop operator or my kids.  I felt I had so much controle and the ability to adjust my speed as necessary.  To be fair though the pro shop guy threw my ball and he didn't like it, he didn't have as much hand and wasn't getting near the hit I was.  Will update with more oil.  Second night shot (fresh oil) 187-196-201 I couldn't hit my mark, ball hit great; shot spares all night.

3 inch pin

2.5 oz top weight

3 3/8 x 3 3/8

small weight hole near my PAP to keep the ball legal.

For starters I have a love/hate relationship with this ball. The ball loves me but I hate it. I was ripping on this ball to some fellow bowlers one night, and a couple days later beat my previous high sanctioned set by close to 70 pins with it.

True it hits very hard, has a very distinct hit to it when you execute properly, and keeps the pins low which of course leads to improved carry.

The main reason I dislike this ball is the amount of over/under I seem to get if I am not 100% consistent in release on anything tighter than a house shot. I can't say I'm surprised too much due to the core design, but I was hoping to be able to use this on heavier tourney shots and after several experiences, I can't say I would recommend this ball for more those type of conditions.

But if you're looking for a ball to really open up an easy shot, this one will be the ultimate cliche.

So far opinions in my area are 50/50. Several people say it's the best modern day ball released, other's say it's a huge flop.

I give it a 6.5.

It's still better than any of the apexs though

I drilled the Black Colossus before the start of summer league. I have about 40 games under my belt with it on both wood and synthetic. I use it whenever the head oil will permit. No death on this baby yet. It still has a big back end with a pin crushing hit. Honestly it sounds different then other balls when it hits the pins.

Ball Spec's: 16#, 3 1/4 oz top weight, 3-4 inch pin, drilled left hand using the spec's for a high tracker and the max back end spec from Moe's #2 drill sheet.

This ball flat out hooks. The way I have it drilled it's not a down and in ball. I had to shine it up a bit from the box finish because I needed a little more length. The ball glides threw the heads and makes a big move when it hits the break point. Light hits carry great. Flush hits make the pins just disapear. High in the pocket can leave 8's. The ball carries the corner great for me and I have always had trouble with the 7. If I had the cash I'd drill another with the control drilling just to see what it can do.

You will not be disapointed with this ball if it's layed out correct and it's used on the proper lane conditions.

Got this ball punched up today, 16lbs. 2-3" pin, not sure of top weight. Basically went with the Control drilling from Morich website, low flare. This ball hits harder than anything I have EVER thrown. Trying to play more of an outside line (bout 18mph at the pins, probably 300 rpms) ball got through the oil very well, picking up a heavy roll, then once it hit the dry made a smooth arc to the pocket where it just sent pins flying in and back. Didnt need messengers cause it hit so hard. Once that line started to burn, moved in a couple of boards and still continued to pound the pocket, but did start to leave a lot of 7 pins (house I was in does not carry well inside). After league was over (thank god), went to my home house to throw a few games there. After first game warming up again, buried the pocket for a game either leaving 7's or 9's (lots of carrydown) or flush. Buried the last 5 in that game for a 238. Started the next game a little more inside, ran the first 9, then proceeded to throw a blowout 7-10 on the first ball in the 10th for a great 266 (whatever). All in all this ball is very versatile, currently shined up good for less hook, but will test out the surface more to get different reactions. Will post again after this tournament and sport league next week. Cant wait to get my hands on a Pearl and a Pioneer. Thanks MO!!!

I bought this ball last spring in the hope of gaining a little more hook . Well the hook is defenitly there and am having a hard time controling it. I am what you call a tweener somewhere between a stroker and cranker. I get plenty of revs playing outside but when I move inside when the lanes start to break down I can't get enough on it to finish. I have a 15# Colossus drilled Half way betwween the first and second drilling instuctions with a counter balance hole just out side of the PAP. I get a bad reaction on carrydown because it tends to roll earlier and hook earlier and that's when I'm forced inside to find the oil and I find the oil then I can't get the extra rev or two to carry. I've polished it several times to try to make it go longer but that has not worked either. If there are any suggestions from others with the same or close to what I'm describing, any and all imput nwould be greatly apprieated.

Have to put an update down on tis baby after last night's happenings. Ball specs are: 16lbs, 2-3" pin, top weight unknown, drilled with the pin below the ring finger with balance hole. Ball was drilled with the Morich control drilling, getting the ball into a heavy roll in the midlane and continuous backend. A hard arc and hitting power is out of this world. Used this ball a lot recently, after putting it in the bag (was rolling over the thumbhole, and couldnt figure it out). For me, playing around the dry and watch this ball hook and keep hooking after it enters the pocket. Last night, shot 300 with it, every bal was flush, pins did not stand a chance. Carry is excellent when ball gets in the "swish zone", pins fly everywhere. If I get in a little bit, ball leaves a lot of corners, but if I can play the dry with good speed and revs, this ball outhits anything on the market today, yesterday and probably tomorrow. If you dont have one....get one ASAP!

This ball is 15lb with 2oz top and 1-2 inches of pin.  It is drilled with the pin below the ring finger and a balance hole. I primarily use this ball on long oil(45ft down, 7 to 7 clean backend).  In box condition skidded too far for me so I had it dulled down to 600 grit.  It stills rolls long but makes a nice, controlled arc to the pocket.  Carries very good and is forgiving.  This is a very readable ball.  It isn't a hook monster by any means but it does roll clean through the heads.  This is a very good ball that will probably not get noticed because it isn't manufactured by "The Big 3"(ebonite, storm, and columbia).

Was this the 2001 ball of the year? If not it should have been.

Just drilled one up last week; got it 2nd hand from a friend and drilled it fairly aggressive for first shift oil.  This is now the #1 ball for my arsenal.  If you read my review of the Columbia Ricochet, I said that the ball hooked too hard/late and hit too hard making the carry unpredictable.  The Black Colossus IMO hits just as hard, if not harder, than the Ricochet yet somehow is able to keep the pins low and carry phenomenally!  I bowl at a house with REALLY soft backends that is known for poor carry and weak hits and this ball cuts through the rack with no problem.

In terms of the overall hook/motion, the ball has a very even and predictable roll and break point (like all my MoRich stuff).  Like my Labryinth the ball gets excellent push through the heads and picks up a very heavy roll but unlike the Labryinth the break point is just a little sharper.  By that I mean it doesn't hook sharply at the break point but the core turns over very sharply, which is probably what gives it that punch at the back.

This ball is great for oil but when the heads start to go I was able to lower my tilt (i.e. throw more of a spinner, lowering my track) and keep it online with no problem.  This is yet another very versatile ball that can handle a wide range of conditions. I like this ball so much that it has officially replaced my Labryinth.  (Read my review of the Labyrinth to see how much I loved that)

To sum up:
- Excellent push thru the heads for a rolling ball
- Ball turns over HARD at the break point but doesn't hook sharply.  It's overall path to the pocket is predictable and fairly even.
- Ball doesn't limit what angle you can play to the pocket
- This is a ball that should last a while, meaning you won't have to put it in the bag after one game from the oil drying up.  For a rolling ball it handles fairly light oil well IMO.
- Guys with a lot of hand might want to stay away from this one. It rolls so hard (rolls not hooks) that IMO it might be too much ball for you power guys.

Now on my 2nd Colossus (had to drop weight due to injuries), I felt compelled to send in a review.
The 1st was drilled for a sharp break point, and although I liked the ball well enough to get a 2nd one, felt it was more condition specific. Seemed to get through the heads decently (box finish), but without some dry/and or in carry down, it just didn't have the "pop" on the beack-end I was hoping for. On fresh shots it was fantastic.
Now I have the 2nd drilled with the control drilling, and WOW. It is a fantastic ball for many conditions. Still box finish, but now a smoother controlled arc, and still maintains power at the pin deck. All that is needed now is a good bowler throwing it

This ball is amazing. Mine is a blem, with the CG about 2" right of the pin-mass bias line. 15#, drilled with a variant of the "sharp breakpoint" layout for medium trackers described on the MoRich drill sheet. And with a good bit of Black Magic polish. This drill is similar to rev leverage, getting the ball to roll very early and get into a smooth arc. The polish gets it down the lane, and as soon as it hits dry, it's rolling and arcing. And crushing pins. This aptly named beastie makes a very distinctive sound when it hits. Pins fly. Jaws drop. Really. With this layout, this ball is extremely predictable, and very versatile. This has become the first ball out of my bag. Most nights, it's all that comes out of my bag.

This ball carries a lot of things it shouldn't. The pins have almost no chance on a pocket hit, and I feel that the bad hits haven't been nearly so bad. I seem to get off light with my mistakes, breaking up a lot of splits and getting 9 when I expected 7 or 8. If this keeps up, this could be my all-time favorite ball.

Added 6/5/2007:

After a few more sessions, this ball lost a lot of power. I have never been able to restore it to its former glory. It was good for a couple of months, and now is little more than a paperweight.

The truth is out there somewhere. And it looks a lot better through the bottom of an empty pint glass.

After rolling an outdated Columbia 300 "U-Dot", I decided to get a new ball.  My local pro recommended the Colossus based on my game and what I wanted my ball to do.  I picked up a 16lb ball and had him drill it based on his recommendation.  I don't know all that "pin" jargon, so I cannot say exactly how it's drilled.  I also have not changed the "out of box" surface condition.  My average is around 180.  I have had the Colossus for about 1.5 months now.  After dealing with some initial thumb-hole problems, I am rolling the ball well.  Since getting this ball, I have rolled some of my best games ever.  My best games are now in the 230-250 range, where they were in the 200-225 range.  This ball destroys pins when it hits the pocket!  It simply carries more pins on a pocket hit.  I used to leave several 10 pins per game.  Now its more like one per game. Even not-so-perfect shots seem to leave less pins standing. The ball does produce a different, more thud-like sound when it hits the pins, but the result is in the pin fall!  So far, I am very pleased with this ball and have no regrets in selecting it!

My favorite ball of all time. Not to sure on the sapn or pin placement. Drilled right handed and is 15#. Got the ball used from my pro shop guy and he said he shot 300 with it. My best game with it is 236 and shot 621 with it. Best lane condition for it is medium to heay oilwhen dull. But shine it up it is good drier lanes, too. So if you are looking for a ball to use on all kinds of lane conditions, than this is the ball you want.
