Title: hands swelling during bowling
Post by: hjk246 on January 30, 2010, 07:26:57 PM
Do a lot of you out there suffer from this?I have been having this problem for quite some time whether I have one drink or none and it has me concerned that maybe I may require surgery or having to throw a lighter ball.I am already down to 14lbs and don't really want to go to 13.

I get swelling in my fingers while bowling many times.....but my "hand" swelling , no. Nowadays when I have a ball drilled my driller adjusts my holes after it is drilled to accomodate the swelling(KNOTS) I get on them. You could always ask your proshop guy about your problem, maybe there is a flaw in how you hold the ball? anyways I'd ask him.

surgery?!?!???

if you are just talking about fit in your ball then you could always do what i do. I hold my hand on my chest or I put my elbow on the desk while i sit down (hand up). This elevating of the hand keeps the blood from swelling up your fingers and thumb. I do this method because there are some nights where I can feel how swollen my fingers are, other nights its the opposite and i have to leave my hand at my side.

you mentioned weight, i really dont see how that would change anything in any way when it comes to swelling. you''re jamming fingers into a ball and then swinging your arm. the swinging alone rushes some blood to your hand.

I agree with icewall, no need for surgery or going down in weight.  Now if you having pain, that is another issue.  Your diet, weather, humidity can all have an effect on swelling.  Watch salty foods, they can make you blow up.  Drink plenty water well before bowling/exercising.  You may need to have your grip checked too.  Holes not big enough to begin with??

yea, I'd say its something with your finger holes..  Maybe being a bit too tight...

I know when leagues start, my Thumb will swell up like a mofo...  Almost to the point of where I cant get my thumb into the ball... Hence why I went to Switch grips.  But it only happens during leagues for the first week or so..

After that, if i bowl like 4 games, take a break, then goto bowl some more, yes, my thumb does swell up...

Mine used to do that. Then I got refitted and it hasn't happened since.

I thought my ball fit was correct for years. Had several very talented people fit and measure me. But sometimes what we are absolutely sure is correct really isn't. May be worth your time to get a second set of eyes on your specs and see if you're not fit properly. May be that you're too stretched out on the ball (that was my problem).

My hand swelled out of the blue two weeks ago. I was using a 2 yr. old ball, that had never been a problem before. This past week, I popped some ibuprofen before league and while bowling I made a conscious effort to have a relaxed grip. I had no problems this week. But if it happens again, I will get re-measured though.

I have a problem with swelling in my hand due to previous sports injuries (1 break and 2 dislocations of the thumb, 3 separate occassions).
I usually take 1 ibuprofen about 2 hrs. before bowling. Helps with the swelling for me. I also don't drink alot during bowling.
I notice the change in size more in really cold weather ... my thumb will start out real loose (small) and need about 3 tape pieces, which are removed over the course of 3 games as it grows. Short of a switch grip, it's the only way I can get a consistent release over the 3-game set.
