Title: Shatter

- Coverstock: 51ML Pearl Reactive
- Weight Block: Neutron Core (14-16 lbs), Modified Caliber Core (12-13 lbs)
- Ball Color: Sky Blue/Emerald All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown.
- Lane Condition: Medium/Light Oil
- Ball Finish: 4000-grit Abralon
- Flare Potential: 4-5 inches
- RG: 16#-2.56, 15#-2.55, 14#-2.60, 13#-2.63, 12#-2.65
- RG Differential: 16#-0.046, 15#-0.042, 14#-0.044, 13#-0.009, 12#-0.011
- A few tiny pit holes in the cover stock of the ball are normal
- Description: Featuring the same proven, late-rolling Neutron core utilized in both the Rising Star and Shooting Star, the Shatter is a model of consistency, producing good length and strong motion down-lane.
The 51ML pearl reactive coverstock was created to go toe-to-toe with medium to lighter oil conditions. This reliable shell allows the ball to easily clear the front part of the lane and provide you with more stored energy down-lane.
The Shatter produces more length and backend on medium to lighter oil conditions than the Rising Star and Shooting star, creating the perfect combination when paired with either of its predecessors.

COMMENTS

Likes: Ease through the heads

Dislikes: None on this pattern with this tester

The motion of this ball is very impressive. The backend motion is well defined and the finish through the pin deck is second to none of our test pattern. The cover of the Shatter allows it to glide through the heads but still bite on the back. We could clearly see the added strength of the coverstock as compared to the Roto Grip Rising Star. The Shatter will fit a hole in the "Star" line when the motion you need is more of a skid/flip look.

Ball specs – 15 lbs 2 oz, 2.54 top weight, 2 3/4-inch pin.

The Shatter, which is a polished pearl, was drilled using the dual angle method.  The layout is a 4 inch pin, 70-degree drill angle and a 30-degree VAL angle.  An x-hole was not needed.  Using Storm’s layout terminology the layout would be 4  by 4 7/8 with a 2 inch pin buffer.  The cover was left OOB which is 1500 polished.

Just like the prior releases at this price point (Shooting Star and Rising Star) the Shatter’s strength surprised me.  But the Shatter’s strength is all in the backend of the lane.  The pattern bowled on was a 41 foot, 24 micro-liter broken down house condition.  I had used a Defiant Edge and Berserk earlier and was playing around 22 with them.  With the HP2 Shatter I was able to move my feet and target slightly right and send it.  The Shatter was extremely clean through the fronts on the broken down pattern.  When the Shatter made its move to the pocket is was quick and angular.  Hit and carry percentage were both very good.

If your looking for a ball to get down the lane and around the corner on medium and broken down patterns look no further than the new HP2 Shatter.

Shatter--- 50x4 ½ x 30 layout-box condition
Patterns tested on: THS on HPL and SPL and London
Ball tested EXCELLENT on the HPL house pattern and US Open pattern, was striking at will by move my feet 3 left and eyes 2 left on the lane outside of where I was playing with a 60x4x40 Berserk.  This ball likes the grittier surfaces and on the SPL, it was a little more delayed in the reaction, more because of the surface difference. I did start to have a better reaction on the SPL when I moved my feet closer to 10-12 and looking at 5-6 right past the arrows. The ball looked great all thru the practice sessions and the ball was not sensitive to the breakdown of the pattern like a normal pearlized ball would be. A great ball to match with the Berserk when the Berserk is a little too strong.

This ball has one of the best two tone color combinations out there. The sky blue/emerald looks sharp not only displayed, but on the lanes as well.  This ball I was very excited to throw. I personally love the Shooting Star and Rising Star, and could not wait to see what the pearl Shatter would provide in the HP2 lineup.  I drilled the Shatter the exact same as the Rising Star. The Storm PSA layout of 5 ½ x 5 x 3 ½ is what I used. This puts the pin in my middle finger.  As with the Rising and Shooting Star, this ball hits like a stick of dynamite.  It provides the most length out of the three. Compared to the Rising Star, the Shatter provides more length, as just mentioned, and a defined movement off the spot in the back parts of the lanes.  At first, the ball seemed slightly sensitive for me, but a light application of 4000 grit abralon changed that. The ball uses all of its energy in the back part of the lane, and I needed to make the break point slightly sooner for me. The slight surface change gave me a little bit more forgiving reaction I was wanting.  When the lanes dry out and you need that ball to give you the length you need in the heads and mid lane, without sacrificing motion in the backend or hitting power, the Shatter is the ball that should be in your hands. Shatter your competition with the Shatter!

Title: Great Value for the Price!!
Post by: jeff_mersch on October 02, 2012, 02:20:46 PM
Layout is stacked above the ring finger no weight hole.
I am a left handed tweener with a 325 rev rate.

The shatter is a great value ball from Roto Grip. The performance is fantastic, and for the price it cannot be beaten. For league this is the first ball out of my bag. It clears the fronts and has a great backend. The pin carry is also amazing, I am glad that I drilled this up in time for my winter leagues to start.

I have tried this ball at multiple surfaces, and it has shown me that it is very versatile. This ball shines up well to get through the heads and save energy for maximum backend reaction. Even at 1000 grit, it still cleared the heads and continued on the backend.

If you are looking for high performance at a great price point, than look no further.

COMMENTS

The Shatter is all about versatility in my mind. The HP2 line for Roto Grip is one of the most complete lines in bowling and there are some really good balls out there these days. We now know that this core can do it all. It offers a predictable motion no matter how you drill it. If you like to see skid/flip, this ball is certainly capable of doing that. If you like a smoother ball motion, we saw that in this test. Either way, it is easily controllable and offers an amazing value proposition.
We tested this piece with very wide angles (80x5x70)to see what we could get out of it.  We know it can be punchy as seen with the Shooting Star and Rising Star.  We got a perfect compliment to control the lanes with a ball that many would think might be all about skid/flip.  Regardless of how you drill it, it is extremely predictable.
We also tested it compared to the Berserk and it would be a nice stepdown to that.  It makes a less aggressive move to the pocket which allows us to control the lanes when their already flying.

Likes:A GREAT BALL. I DRILLED MY SHATTER 5 X 3 X 4 45 DEGREES WITH A LARGE WEIGHT HOLE OVER MY PAP. THIS BALL IS SWEET, THE GREEN PEARL SHELL GETS THROUGH THE HEADS FAIRLY CLEAN. THE MIDLANE IS STRONG AND THE BACKEND IS STRONG ALSO. BREAKPOINT SHAPE IS LIKE A HOCKEY STICK. A REAL BARGAIN IN THE LOWER MID PRICE RANGE.

Title: Roto Grip Shatter
Post by: StormRoto on November 25, 2012, 12:45:01 AM
The Roto Grip Shatter is the HP-2 Line.  The Shatter is a high RG and medium differential ball with a Pearl Coverstock.  This ball has a skid/ flip reaction.
When the Shatter sees friction , it is going to read it with a hard angular motion.
Very clean up front and stores a lot of energy for the backend.  I drilled mine
with a 4.75 inch pin above middle finger, stacked CG.  The Shatter has a lot bounce room to the right, and the carry is exceptional.  Best used on medium to dry conditions.  I have had success using the Shatter when the heads start to go and the oil carries down to the back.  The Shatter cuts right through the carrydown.
Very popular ball for all styles of bowlers.

Title: Shatter Ball Review
Post by: RonCase823 on November 25, 2012, 08:33:15 PM
My Axis is 5 5/8 right, ¼ up, my speed is average and I would consider myself with higher revs but more up the back.  So not a cranker but not really straight either.

Drilled the pin 4” and the CG 3 ½” from PAP (pin down).

This ball is awesome!  It goes through the heads very smooth then makes a sharp turn and has no quit.  It’s been great on house shots as well as several patterns where you need to play way inside.  With my release I’m always looking for a ball to play way inside and still get it around the corner with enough left on it to carry and the Shatter does that with ease.  It has also worked late in tournaments when the heads are drying up because it gets down the lane so well.  I would highly recommend this ball!

Hey all and thanks for reading.  As always the video review is here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26duFMeKd64&list=UUUdapKcbpNzp3PGwdo7P6GQ&index=4&feature=plcp

Rotogrip Shatter is a fantastic benchmark ball.  The core has been proven in the Rising Star and the Shooting Star.  This ball easily glides through the front part of the lane, rolls up in the midlane and has a nice strong arc on the back once it encounters friction.  I have used this ball on Cheetah Viper and Scorpion with much success and is one of the very first balls out of my back for a regular house pattern.  The hitting power and versatility this ball delivers is great.  Let me say that again GREAT!!!!!!   Not to mention it is an eye catcher.

After a lot of success with the Shooting Start, I could not wait to try the Shatter with its pearl finish.  I loved the Shatter on a medium or dry shot. This ball should be ideal for a house shot.  In a typical league shot I could play outside the second arrow most of the night.  As the conditions broke down, I could easily move in 3-5 boards and stay in the pocket.  With the pearl finish, this ball has a sharp backend and makes a quick continuous move to the pocket.

My Shatter was drilled with the pin below the fingers and he CG kicked out close to the PAP.  I kept the box finish.  After a few games to scuff up the box finish a little, this ball began showing its real potential. This ball cleared the heads great.  In the mid-lane the ball revved up nicely and made a sharp decisive move to the pocket.

The Shatter has a very predictable reaction.  This is great for the league player. As the lanes transition, this is an ideal ball to go to. I made slight adjustments with ball speed and angle and was able keep the ball in play and use this ball all night long.

This ball surprised me and played a lot stronger than you would expect based on the specs. I was getting 4-5 inches of flair and bouncing the ball off the dry all night.

If you are looking for a ball with length and a powerful but predictable backend motion, the Roto Grip Shatter is all of this and more! The layout that I used for my Shatter is 60 X 5 X 45 or simply put Pin above the fingers with the cg kicked out enough for an X Hole. My personal coordinates are as follows: axis point 5 5/8 over and ¾ up with a rev rate around 300 to 315 and my ball speed is around 15 mph with a lot of forward roll. I personally like going straighter through the front part of the lane. Also I am Right Handed.

I have used the Shatter on several different patterns and several different surfaces. I had problems especially in the middle games of tournaments or the third game of league with getting my ball to finish strong in the pocket…. That was before I drilled a Shatter! The Shatter’s fantastic length and the Powerful Backend Motion allows me to move in and go around and through the carry down with confidence. It is my go to ball when the heads are scorched and the move is left and get the ball to the right! The Shatter is at home on the 30 to 40 foot patterns like the Viper, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Athens, Seoul, etc… You get the point the Shatter is a versatile bowling ball. The Shatter will always be travelling with me wherever I am bowling!

The Shatter is a must for anyone’s bowling arsenal!
