Title: Brunswick C-(System) versa-max Bowling Ball.....wow
Post by: cav on November 16, 2012, 11:32:23 PM
Interesting night..........I play up the 10 board, stroker, avg.195.  My problem is that I dont have a huge margin for error with my strike ball.  I usually bowl with my Ebonite Afterburner and Sure fire.  Tonight, A friend let me use his  Brunswick C-(System) versa-max Bowling Ball.....The ball fit is 90% correct with a slight span problem.  I decided to bowl with it anyway.  All 4 practice balls.......strike....with a nice arc to the pocket.....First 10 balls first game.......strike....I ended with a 289.  Just a couple questions...1) Should I look to buy this ball?   2)  The next few games the lanes broke down and I didnt bowl as well, Perhaps I should buy 2 of them.....1 a little tamer?

First of all, nice bowling.  Now, to answer the question, I LOVE the look and carry that I get with the Versa Max. If, however, you struggle with the lanes as they start to get drier you should look at the MEANSTREAK.

You should be able to play that area of the lane a bit longer, and have similar reaction and carry. On fresh it would go slightly longer than the Versa so you could play a little closer to friction, but as the lanes start to transition your moves should be smaller ones.  Best of luck to you.

As another stroker who likes to play an outside shot, I second everything you say about the VersaMax.  The ball is incredible!  Absolutely smooth and predictable, carry is amazing, and OOB the ball works great on everything except floods and bone dry.

From what I've heard, the Aura and the Meanstreak would fit right around it.  That's why I intend to buy both of them!

I agree with the Meanstreak. It is cleaner through the fronts and more angular down lane. If you have funds and want to buy 2 balls than I would buy the Versa and the Meanstreak. If you don't I would go with the Meanstreak. As already mentioned it has a longer usability than the Versa. You may have to start a few boards further right to start the night but your carry will not suffer as the night goes on.

Because of health problems, I don't have that many gmes on my Versa-Max and the last time I used it was mid Oct, but I support all that has been said about this ball in the topic posted here. I simply LOVED mine plus it became the first ball out of my bag. One of if not the most versatile ball I have ever owned. Can't wait to get back to bowling so I can throw it again. However it will be awhile yet for that to happen.

Versa Max and Maxxed Out are both great balls.  Versa Max really lets me square up and seems to flush up high pocket better than a lot of balls on many conditions.  Maxxed out is incredibly smooth and gives me a look on some tougher patterns.

Jello,

Its very early, but I'm averaging about a 225 (6 games) with the Versa-Max C thus far. My normal is about 196...so Im excited!  My biggest problem are adjustments.....after game 1 last week I just threw it a little harder and moved my feet 2 boards left.  It worked, (231,235,214)....BTW, the span is 1/8th inch too big, but I'm trying it out anyway!

I like the way the Versa moves, for me its a smooth arc that just seems to find the pocket, even on shots I slightly miss.  Interestingly, I had a few splits, but managed to string together 5-6 strikes in the first 2 games....My very first ball of the night looked PERFECT, but left the solid 9! pin........Will leave more feedback later

Update,

Medium oil/med-light seems perfect for the Versa Max.  Last week... slick lanes, I could only muster a 180 or so.  This week, 733 series (14 out of 15 at one point) 279,238,216....I actually misfired several balls and still did ok.  For now, my other bowling balls must sit and wait.......like a back-up quarterback....

Best two ball combo on the market for us lefties  Arua and Versa max  Both balls react the same with the aura a little stronger.  I like the versa max rather than the Meanstreak because it's so smooth. Thats what you need gm 3 when the lanes start to break down.

If you look back in the forums I posted one stating that the versa-max is the best ball I have ever had. I have two and used it on everything from old wood houses to synthetics to last year at nationals. With both of mine I took the box finish off and used a 2000 then 4000 pad and left a nice matte finish and it is awesome ever since.

To comment on other things I got a meanstreak as well after the first versa max, it's ok took me awhile to say that out of the box didn't like it. I bowl on wood and sometimes these high gloss finish balls get to be too squirty and that's what this did. My response and reaction to this was that I bought another versa-max lol.

The versa-max is a great ball and is probably my favorite to use when the lanes start to get difficult. I have 2 versa-max balls as well; one is pin down with a 2000 surface and the other is pin up with the factory finish. They have a unique strong motion that is not matched by any ball on the market.

Jeremy, I too had an issue with the box finish of the Meanstreak with it not reading the lane properly on wood or synthetics. I took it to 500 and then used Rough Buff skipping the high gloss polish. It seems that the high gloss polish was causing the ball to wiggle. Now, the ball has come alive and has a stronger backend reaction.

I've been reading this post with good interest, because I am also in need of a ball to go below my 2 versa max when it gets on the dry side. I would like to stay in the same area of the lane to (outside). I've been reading what you guys are saying about the meanstreak but I'm not totally sold on it. I'm leaning toward something outside of brunwick. I'll keep following along. Love my versa max though. Just through my first 300 with it a couple of weeks ago with a 299 and a 780 series in the TNBA tounament.

Well, I can report back on the Meanstreak/Versa-Max combo and it's a winner!  I have an OOB VM with a standard, cg in palm 1:30 label drill.  I am a lower revs/speed stroker and this ball is a great down-and-in ball. But at OOB with this weak drill even with hand adjustments I was struggling a bit with it when the lanes break down too much. Hard to move inside and burns up on the outside.

With that in mind, I picked up the Meanstreak to switch to after the VM had burned a nice wall of dry on the outside that I could bounce it off.  I drilled the Meanstreak 60x4x65.

OOB I found the Meanstreak squirty as others reported.  But at 500/2000/light compound this ball came to life!  If you liked the Damage for light to medium oil, then you will love the Meanstreak.  All the length, smoothness, and predictability of that ball with waaaaaay more backend. This ball hooks, but it will never jump off the friction.  Don't be afraid to put an aggressive drill on it because the higher RG and cover gives it plenty of length.

Bighorn, Don't be afraid of the Meanstreak. The ball is great when the VM is a little to much. At that point and time you can change to the Meanstreak stay in the same zone. Then if they continue to change you can continue to move in with the MS and it will not give up.
