Title: Octane Carbon
Post by: BallReviews-scodaddy21 on April 20, 2017, 03:37:01 PM
The Octane Carbon from Motiv was designed for light to medium oil lanes and offers length with a continuous backend motion. This ball has the Agitator MXR (MaXimum energy Retention) Pearl Reactive coverstock and is finished with a 5500 grit LSP. The Injector core has a higher RG which helps the ball go further down the lane before breaking and the coverstock helps retain the balls energy. The core utilizes a dual-density design along with a moderate differential to produce a responsive backend reaction. Bottom line is that the Red Fire Pearl Octane Carbon creates easy length down the lane with continuous backend motion that powers through the pin deck.

Color: Red Fire Pearl (Black/Orange Pearl NeoMark)
Core: Injector
Coverstock: Agitator MXR Pearl
Finish: 5500-grit LSP
RG: 2.56 (15# ball)
Differential: 0.042 (15# ball)
Reaction: Length with strong backend
Recommended Lane Condition: Light to Medium Oil

The Octane Carbon would be a great ball for any bowler to add to their arsenal.  It is a very versatile ball that is good for many different lane conditions and many different layouts.  For me the ball provides the necessary length when I need it and picks up nicely on the backend to give it that great continuous motion through the pins.  I find myself going back to this ball again and again when I begin to struggle on the lanes.

Review:

The Octane Carbon is the latest release from MOTIV Bowling. The new Carbon brings together a new core and cover combo that will just strike at will that I believe MOTIV fans will absolutely will love. The Octane Carbon introduces the new dual-density Injector Core. This core gives the Carbon a higher RG to give it much needed length down lane and then add the new Agitator MXR Pearl Reactive cover stock the Octane Carbon has retainable energy that we have never seen in MOTIV products. This combo makes the Octane Carbon one of the longest and most angular bowling ball on the market.

Comments:

I’m currently on my 5th year as a MOTIV staffer player and during that time I have thrown some of the best equipment there is. A few of the have left me speechless on how well the performance is and the Octane Carbon is the one that have left me speechless the longest. First game after putting holes in it I shot a 300 game. The devastation through the pins is something I have never seen in a bowling ball in a very long time. During that game I through multiple angles and even through off balance shots and the Carbon just kept on coming back with authority. This by far is one of the best bowling balls MOTIV has ever made. The more I move left, the stronger it comes back. The retained energy it has through the pins I feel I can strike at will. This ball is a must for bowlers to have in their bags hands down. This ball will destroy house shots and will be a great for tournament conditions both on fresh and during transition if you need something down lane without losing performance.

Likes: Strong Length; angular backend; retainable energy through the pins.
Dislikes: None

I recommend the Octane Carbon for all types of bowlers.

This ball blows my mind away. There is nothing on the market that gives me such a clean look through the fronts with a controllable hard motion down lane when I need it.

This ball is perfect for those medium to dry conditions when the lanes transition and you need to start getting deeper on the lane. This ball never quits coming around the corner.

This is an immediate ball down from the Primal Fear for me and gives me a perfect transition ball on all of the medium length house shots and sport patterns out there. My personal preference with the ball was to hit it with a 4000 pad and give it a little bit more mid lane read as I do have a higher axis rotation. This cover and core combination give this ball the ability to look great for power players when they want to get left while also giving the straighter players more entry angle going up the lane.

You need this one in your bag!

Layout:
75 x 4 x 40

When the lanes start to dry out and you need some added performance in your game, get #firedup with the Octane Carbon. Motiv has brought two new pieces of technology to the Octane line to provide a truly high-rev piece: the Agitator MXR Pearl shell (5500LSP) wrapped around the duly density Injector core (2.56RG, .042Diff). The intention of my layout was to provide a slightly stronger compliment to my Venom Cobra between those second and third transitions and that is exactly what this ball provides. The pearl shell/high RG core combination provides easy projection through the heads. Given that I put a 4in pin placement on it I start to see the Carbon read the midlane yet it does not react early; it still glides down the lanes even though it is showing it is already reaction to the surface. Once at the breakpoint this ball unleashes a powerful move to the pocket which greatly helps when my launch angles widen (which they always do as the day progresses). Watching others throw their Carbons with longer pin placements reveals a backend that is even more dramatic. I have been able to throw mine on the fresh since our house shots are medium volume and even then it impressed. While I had to square up the lane I did not see any over reaction on the crisp, new backends. The ball read the mids well before making a quick motion to the pocket which carried through to the pit. This may be one of the more versatile balls I have in my bag right now.

LANE CONDITION

Length: 41'

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

This ball is the third release in the Octane line. While I liked the previous two Octanes (Octane and Octane Burn) both were really condition specific balls for me.

The original Octane needed a lot of friction for me to have a good look with it and the Burn gave me some over/under on fresh oil.

Sometimes I tend to struggle with high RG balls because with my low rev rate the ball skids more than I want it to and if I hit the friction too early the ball goes through the nose, so I was a bit worried that the Octane Carbon would be one of those balls. Fortunately for me it is not the case.

The Octane Carbon is a versatile ball. It handles oil better than the Octane Burn and it is more predictable than the Octane.

I used this ball on fresh during the review and in two different leagues I bowl in and the ball does exactly as advertised: Go long with an angular backend motion.

My first night with the Carbon was in a house where the backends are dirty and you don't see a lot of shape, so you have to play really tight. I used the Carbon since the start, laying the ball down around 8-10, keeping the pocket in front of me and the ball worked great. The ball just gave me what I needed, good length and a strong backend motion.

The second night I bowled in a house with wood lanes, so even for me that I am a lefty, I see a lot of friction since the beginning and the transition happens from one shot to another.

I decided to use the Carbon for the third game since my Forza was reading the lane too early. I moved 4 and 2 to the right, laying the ball down around 13-15 (for the record, playing 13-15 is DEEP for me) and the ball just went effortlessly through the front part of the lane with a strong move to the pocket. I shot 268 and the only pins I left were 9 pins, this ball is definitely angular.

For the review, I bowled in a house with synthetic lanes and their typical house shot is the Kegel Main Street pattern.

I tried playing from different angles and the ball gave me a consistent reaction from shot to shot, it seems like an easy ball to play with.

For a pearl this is something I really appreciate since most of the time I get some over/under on fresh. This ball was able to give me the same shape and the same length over and over again.

I was able to play as deep as third arrow with this ball, which for me is a big thing. I was also able to play comfortable in my confort zone, which is around second arrow and the ball gave me a great look, providing great length and a strong backend motion.

Misses inside resulted in the ball wanting to push the ball down the lane, giving me some margin of error. Misses outside and the ball jumped hard to the right, sometimes leaving corner pins and a couple of 9 pins, but overall I feel like this ball provided me a big area to throw the ball, making it a great option for house shot patterns.

I compared the Octane Carbon with the Venom Cobra and the Venom Shock.

The Venom Cobra is a tad earlier than the Octane Carbon. It is smoother and less angular down the lane. Overall, it is weaker than the Octane Carbon.

The Venom Shock is stronger than the Octane Carbon. It reads the lane earlier and it has a slower response to friction, making it smoother than the Carbon. Overall the Venom Shock has more hook potential.

I feel this ball is something we have never seen from Motiv before. This is by far the cleanest ball in the Motiv lineup and it provides a strong, angular backend motion.

I found this ball to be more versatile than I thought. This ball can be used from different angles, it can be used to play straighter on fresh while it also can be used to play steeper angles when there is not enough oil in the front part of the lane.  I think the Octane Carbon will fit a lot of different bowling styles.

Thank you for watching!

Summary:

The MOTIV Octane Carbon possesses the brand new dual-density Injector core and Agitator MXR (MaXimum energy Retention) Pearl Reactive cover stock. This new combination is nothing like anything MOTIV has released in the past, the new core and cover combination is a head turner for sure. I am a huge fan of the angle this ball creates with the layout that I selected to use. The layout places the pin directly above my middle finger, helping the ball push a bit further down the lane for a strong and angular motion towards the pocket. Keep the shine on the ball or knock it off, you’ll find that there is a lot more to this ball when it comes to being versatile. This ball proves there is absolutely a very exciting future in store with MOTIV, see your local Pro Shop Operator and pick one up today!

The Carbon Octane is the 3rd installment to the Octane series and is a series that I am quite fond of, the combination of the Agitator coverstock and the Injector core will provide you with predictive continuation and sharp entry angles.  As I threw my Carbon Octane what caught my attention was the way it rolled as it was very continuous from start to finish, unlike the original Octane and the Octane Burn it didn’t skid as much despite it providing me great length. I attribute the Carbon Octane’s ball motion to the Injector core and its continuous motion, the previous Octanes both had the Quadfire core which allowed them to skid more freely and starting up down lane.

A great quality about the Carbon Octane is how quickly it responds to friction which I found beneficial to me when I found myself playing high angles from the right or deep angles from the left, the sharp continuation of the Carbon didn’t disappoint me.  I had an instant love jones once I threw the Carbon and I have found it to serve as a phenomenal tag team partner to my United Revolt and Venom Shock, should either of the two become too much ball for the desired condition I throw the Carbon and pick up where I left off.

Another great quality about the Carbon Octane is how well it takes to surface adjustments as the previous Octanes were best left at box in my opinion, adding surface to the Carbon will slow down the overall sharpness of the ball and make the shape more continuous than what it is at box. I feel higher ball speeds will be able to take advantage of that while those of lesser speeds will find the Carbon more useful at box finish, I’ve had success with the Carbon at surfaces from 800. My first favorite surface to keep it at is box and the second is 2000, as I stated adding surface just makes it more continuous and in my opinion you can never have too much of that.

I consider the Carbon Octane to be a must have for those that are a fan of the Octane series like myself and for those who have wanted more out of their Octane Burn overall from a ball motion standpoint, a bowling ball definitely worth adding to your arsenal. Do yourself a favor and inhale the fumes from the Carbon Octane and allow yourself to get high off Octane.

Your game will thank you for it.

Motiv Octane Carbon (http://www.motivbowling.com/products/balls/octane-carbon.html)
70 x 5 x 35 (3000 Abralon)

Personal Stats:
400-450 RPM
18-20 MPH
PAP - 5 5/8" over, 1" up
Axis Tilt - Estimated 8-12 Degrees
Current League Average: 238

Intended Use:
I drilled the Octane Carbon with my go-to pin-up layout and hit it with 3000 abralon. My goal for this piece was to give me a logical step down from the United Revolt and step up from the Venom Cobra. I was looking for angular motion for medium to med-heavy patterns.

Reaction:
The Octane Carbon at 3000 abralon gives me angular motion, without being allergic to oil. Not the quickest response motion in the line, but still provides plenty of punch in the back of the lane on medium patterns. Logical step down from the Octane Carbon or possibly from a strong drilling Venom Shock.

Overall:
The Octane Carbon fits perfectly in the niche I aimed for. When the Venom Cobra just isn't strong enough, but the United Revolt is just too much, this piece fits perfectly in the middle while providing the entry angle required to string strikes.

Octane Carbon
The Octane Carbon, what to say about this ball. Well lets dig in. The Carbon is the newest ball with a duel density weight block offered by Motiv. What I found with the weight block in this version of the octane series is the different shape. The new weight block is substantially cleaner than its predecessors. What I allows liked about the Quadfire core in the Qz/Thrash/Octane line was they way the core read the midlane. The midlane was more pronounced with the Quadfire core. The Injector core in the Carbon does not read the midlane nearly as hard and therefore seems to scoot to the spot cleaner than all aforementioned balls. With the increased RG value and the similar Diff value this ball really shines with added motion down lane.
So how does one drill a ball like this in order to utilize the core values of this ball? I drilled this with one of my favorite late block layouts. I used 50 X 4.5 X 45, this put the pin up and in the middle of the bridge with the GC just kicked out a bit. The question begs does the ball work well. Yes it does. The Carbon shines best on the burn and late game situations. The core allows the ball to glide through the front and middle with ease, the covers response to the friction down lane is hard and continuous. The cover is not as sensitive as past releases to the friction but still allows you to open the angles up and really toss it to the spot and let the ball buck back to the pocket.
I fully expect this ball to be a mainstay in the bag for long block events and places where the surface hooks. I also plan on drilling another Carbon with my favorite pin down layout. Those with high rev rates and those who are soft on speed, who have trouble getting balls to motion later should really check this nugget out.
