Title: Buzz words that piss you off?
Post by: northface28 on June 15, 2017, 07:19:23 PM
1) "Smooth"- Look, most every ball is smooth when you don't the following: Elbow it, claw all over it, bend over at the release point and hit up on the ball while it's out in front of you.

I'll start with that.

"But that hit the pocket"
when they leave a 5-7 or an 8-10 or a 4 pin or weak 10 pin.

How could I forget this? Some people think it's their god given right to strike because they hit the pocket.

So true!

Or the guy who only bowls in the Senior No Tap League complaining that he can't cover... the... 10 pin...

Well when do you ever get to shoot at one???

"Piece" has just ascended to the top of my list. I absolutely HATE when people refer to balls as piece or "she".

In all fairness, it doesn't matter where you target as long as you are hitting the same spot consistently. Now, if they believe they are actually hitting 10 rather than 8, then that's another story. But in the end, they are still being consistent.

Perceived mark and true mark may not always be the same.

I did it once in a review. Then, when I read my own review, I realized just how bad it was.

I thought it would be cool.  I WAS WRONG.

Yes hybrid as well. Marketing at it's finest or people at their dumbest it's hard to say.

To quote a manufacturer ball reaction video "we've never seen this kind of reaction out of an asymmetric hybrid bowling ball before. ".  ???

they don't hit the same spot. most don't even know where their ball passes at two point at least. With these handicap bowlers, if I put a nickle 40' down lane and ask them to hit, they'll miss it half the time. If I asked them to hit the second or third arrow then the nickle at the spot @ 40', they get even worse. (Great drill for side action with other bowlers....)

I was challenge long time ago by coach Pete Somoff and it's a great practice drill if the house lets you do it.

"I got ROBBED." and the ball deflected...

I have a guy I bowl with that, when transition begins, he refers to it as them starting to "bone up".

Example:
Me - "Man, they're starting to break down some, I'm going to have to consider moving left or balling down."
Teammate - "Yeah, I don't know......I gotta wait till they bone up a little and then I'll adjust."

I don't have an issue with saying a lane is "bone dry" per se, but that term should be reserved for an extreme condition.  Not as a term to describe transition.

I wouldn't say it "pisses me off"........but mildly tilting is likely appropriate.

This, all of this. The only buzz words and phrases that really make me roll my eyes are those found in reviews/marketing by manufacturers and by staffers that are only in it just to hit their contract quota.

Solid, hybrid, and pearl is kind of up there too but at least the manufacturers usually make the balls to fit the perceived motions of those three designations. Not all the time, but solids are usually the earliest, pearls are the longest, and hybrids fall somewhere between the prior two.

"Keeps the pins low"

Completely BS term.  Every ball hits every pin at the same height.  Pins don't magically shoot up in the air or stay low because of your core/cover combination.

Sorry to disagree, but yes, they do. Mostly it's milder balls that do not throw the pins with massive force; they seem to keep the pins low because they hit less hard. BUT nevertheless, they seem to move the pins enough so they fall quite well. The old Visionary Blue/Green Centaur is an example of that.

When it hits the pins, it barely seems to touch them and they fall as if they can't get out of the way fast enough. Its hit is nothing like the really strong balls, Locks and No Rules; yet the pins fall with surprising efficiency.

I cannot say that I know why this happens; it just does.  This is the result of watching this ball do this for almost 15 years now.

when they leave a 5-7 or an 8-10 or a 4 pin or weak 10 pin.

How could I forget this? Some people think it's their god given right to strike because they hit the pocket.

for me I know guys that think if they hit the 1-2 or the 1-3 they think that they are automatically in the pocket.  even if their ball barely touches the head pin and it falls sideways with no backward movement into pins.

I'll take my 30+ years of observation over that.  Short of the ball or pin being well out of spec (pin too tall, ball too small), a ball can't mathematically make a pin go up.  Your explanation of really strong balls versus mild balls is more than likely due to you perspective looking straight down at the pins from 60 feet away.  A pin knocked across the deck looks more in motion than a pin knocked straight back from that angle at the foul line.

And all of this is why I hate that term.

 Very well stated.
Mo is a really smart guy.
Problem is, he thinks he is even smarter than that, and that he knows more than anyone else, and everyone else's theories and opinions do not count if they don't agree with his.

He blew his own company up with his theory of EVERYTHING should be created asymmetric and super strong. You can EASILY see his influence at Radical, I just hope Phil can balance him out.

It didn't matter what type of balls his company sold.  When you own a small slice of a shrinking market eventually your slice gets too small to exist.

Many Years ago I attended his seminar and though I was very new to the technology (still know very little) and relearning how to bowl again, he came off as such a person that knew everything and everyone else is wrong or dumb. That turned my off, but kept an open mind.

  • Mop - In no other hobby/sport do house cleaning items become nicknames
  • Pill - Someone else said this, and I 100% agree.  People who say this should take a few doses of nope
  • Almost every coverstock name I've ever seen - In the grand scheme of things, how much more aggressive have coverstocks gotten in the last 10 years?  Sure, probably a board or two, but to me it's all marketing bullshit and that hurts the bowlers because now we have no clue how much more aggressive one coverstock is vs. the next.  I like Global's numbering system for covers - it's simple, and relative. Like Albert Einstein.

Thank you great lefties on my pair for blending out the extreme wet/dry I often face for 2 1/2 games of a 3 game set.

It is about an old particle ball hit with polish with the intention of solving side to side wet/dry the version I see with harsh side to side barriers and bounce area.

Around our area the smooth and weakish Match Pearl has really shined on our Super Extreme side to side Wet dry.. Stronger covers like the Punch out leap off this sameharsh wet dry like encountering Cement!

Picked up these two older pieces and finally got to roll.

Looking forward to compare to my never miss 1960s rubber ball on my local wet dry!

While I am a fan of my Pancake rubber ball which I can pour into the pocket like slow Syrup ball after ball after ball on my local harsh harsh wet dry house shot.

Anyone tried a Scout reactive Solid on an extreme wet dry house shot here?

So yesterday I had a frustrating carry day with my can't miss Rubber orb, on my harsh wet dry fresh shot!

Oh great, now we will have some company come out with the Einstein cover stock that is relatively better with it's new improved mass-energy equivalence formula.  It will be quantum leaps above the competition.

what does MOP mean?

It's some bizarre nickname a lot of bowlers use.  I don't get it.  I never got it.  I hope to never understand.  There are also some bizarre variations of it - "Mopper" "Mopped" "Moppy Mop".

I'm in NJ, so Doom's insight into it being an East Coast thing is probably accurate.

"Shimwrecker" for anyone not throwing a factory polished marble down the lane

"Tricking it" ..... sorry, it's still a _" pin to axis

"I punched up..." when the bowler has never even drawn a line on a ball, much less operated a drill press

Mop was an action bowling term of endearment given to "donators". Guys that would get the floor "mopped" with them. It evolved in some areas to "mop" being the guy that was doing the "mopping". example...

"Ted came in  last week and mopped up the place for 4 games and left."
("Ted" walks in the center)
"Hey Mop!"- to Ted
"Yo! Mop!"- Ted
