Title: Do you guys roll your Gems?
Post by: six pack on June 16, 2017, 07:40:02 AM
I just scored on a ball that was one of my all time favorites from back in the day. I didn't expect to see one in such good shape and wasn't looking for one or it's reaction but bought it anyway. Now the question in my mind comes up,should I even use it in league?

Unless you either bought it to try to make a fast buck,
OR
you get your rocks off by staring at sitting on a shelf,
a ball is nothing if it's not used for the purpose for which it was made.
(If you had two of them, then I could see drilling one and putting one on a shelf.)

My only suggestion is that you make sure how you and your driller determine the way it should be drilled for you to get the best use from it. Just because you're not likely to find another one and 2nd drillings can look really ugly. Most people don't have an ugly "pride and joy". Good luck.

I may get my rocks off starring at it,like a trophy. IF I change anything it would only be the thumb. I hope I don't have to.

I have a couple I plan on putting holes in, but some.of them are backups. Green Mamba, Mamba Hybrid, and Look I plan on drilling. I have a second clutch Pearl and Incinerate, and snagged a bull whip SE, freight train, and solar flare at prices I couldn't pass up.

And yes, I kind of like looking at my shelf of NIBs. I'm a freak.

 No, I do not.

I've bought balls in the past with the intention of drilling them, then just could not bring myself to do so.

My prized possession, sitting in my closet, is a 14lb, NIB NITRO/R from 1993.

Why is it prized? I have no idea.
Why couldn't I bring myself to drill it?  I have no idea.

So, in my closet it sits. Going on quite a few years now.

Sigh..........😔

Funny have that same dilemma right now with the only real gem (though many would say turd) I have in this EPX T1 I picked up.  Unlike most gems this one has a decent chance of falling apart in the ball return.  Originally was going to resale it but now antsy to drill and play with.  Since its supposed to be 120 here on Monday though my common sense is telling me to wait a few months to avoid the nasty temperature extremes.  Something to look forward after our hellfire season starts winding down I suppose.  Not sure how you guys can keep NIB (spares of balls you already have aside) for years though.  A few months is tough on me.

Edit:  Couldn't resist and just got it drilled.  My pro shop guy who is amazing was laughing at how even though an amazing job was done to plug it prior but even then you could feel the plug wasn't quite flush because this ball is truly one of a kind.  Can't wait to roll it.

I have REALLY liked a few balls in my time:
Dyno-Thane Concept XXXtra, Hammer 3D Pearl, Messenger Ti Pearl, Lane Masters New Standard, Storm Bolt Pro, Visionary Blue/Green Centaur, Track Heat 2 Pearl,
but oddly I have no prized remembrance of any ball with which I used to shoot an honor score. I have no nostalgia that way.

Not Yet!

I have a Twisted Fury Pearl, Red Death, and a Passion Lust all NIB sitting in a special place just waiting for the day.

O, I forgot I have a Vapor Zone also.

What to do......

I wish I had kept my Twisted Fury. I feel like it'd be much more useful to me now after improving as a bowler the last few years.

Always wanted a Vapor Zone or Strike Zone.

If I buy a ball it is to be used in league and any tournaments.  only once have I ever had an undrilled ball in my possession for any length of time.  it was a second ball of a favorite.  ended up giving it to a friend.  have never bought a ball to sit undrilled since.

Only a couple have even tempted me.

Found one of these used about 3-4 months ago in 16 lbs. Gave it to my team captain who loves older balls. He can't put it down. Since February till the end of the winter season his average rose 10 pins in ALL his leagues. Yes, it is a good ball. Final proof that Mo Pinel can make a good light to medium oil ball if he tries hard enough. It's easy to make a heavy oil ball; it;s hard to make a good light oil ball.

(Kind of like the actor who says, "Drama is easy; comedy is hard.")

It's not hard to make a light oil ball, the problem is people relate hook potential to price and think a light oil ball should cost less, yet it costs the same to make.

A light bulb core in a mild cover should not cost the same as the latest and greatest hook monster with all the marketing hype and R&D.  The problem is the light oil stuff doesn't make money cause every fudge knuckler wants the hook monsters

Make a product you make $50 per unit or one you make $20 and will sell less units?  It's not a tough business decision.

If it's the one from e-bay, just be glad I didn't decide to bid on it. ;)

Yeah,I did the first bid and wasn't gonna do another. I was surprised to see one so I threw the bid out there not expecting to win it. I guess no body remembers the T flash anymore.
The sad thing is I don't even need it as I'm loving my venus so much for broken down conditions but I'll probably polish up the T and enjoy it.

Mildly guilty of that as I ended up buying the Lane #1 Stealth Bomber which was a bit cheaper than the Dart which would probably be more useful for me.  Still $180 for a light oil ball only is a heavy lift.  For that price it absolutely has to be able to handle THS as well which short of 360 grit it probably can't (whereas the Bomber with polish can and was like $50 cheaper at the time).  Blue Hammer and my old BVP Rampage polished up do just fine on the dry. Have nothing but good things to say about the PowerKoil 18 coverstock pieces.  Surprisingly good even on the entry/mid level stuff.  Yesterday's THS monster can often be tomorrow's light oil ball.

Here is some older Japanese dude throwing a NITRO/R2 (newer version?).  He has videos also for my EPX T1 and bunch of other older balls.  I actually like watching a lot of the asian bowlers roll because often their style is closer to mine than some of these rev/speed monsters you see in the ball videos in the west.

I have quite a few gems I would LOVE to drill but have no real reason too I only bowl once a week now that I have two young kids, the new equipment is as good and cheaper, and they are worth too damn much undrilled to even think of putting holes in them. I have over 50 undrilled balls not all are gems but will be after a few years on the shelf I mainly buy to resell but they are fun to look at one day when my wife isn't home I'll pull them all out and take a pretty picture :-)

I have plenty of gems, some of which I might drill up, some I might end up selling, and some I don't mind just looking at (mainly the Clear ball collection LOL).

The problem is, I don't wanna punch a ball up, just to punch a ball up. I have a pretty rounded arsenal, so no need to pull out a NIB Original Inferno and drill it just because I have it. Now with that being said, I might drill up one of my NIB Scorcher NPT, since I loved the Midnight...but who knows.

My only real "gem".  Rolling it for the first time tomorrow and wanted to get a few photos before it cracks.  My Stealth Bomber may be a gem someday but not yet.  The panthers I want on the other hand.

I don't like the pin being so close to the finger holes, much larger chance of cracking, especially with that ball.  --  JohnP

Doh told driller to drill it in a way to reduce cracking too.  Should have realized I guess, oh well.  Rolled it for a game today and it was fine with good carry but man it sucks up oil off the lane in a hurry.  Hard to use it with the same line for even one full game.  I see using it in warm ups more than games to create miss room.  Also thanks for pointing that out even if can't do much about it now.

This is what I used to use my Granite Gargoyle for, except for when I hit the floods and the Granite was the only thing moving!

Dude....... it's a bowling ball not a 1971 Hemi 'Cuda.  Throw it and enjoy.  You gain nothing by hoarding it in the closet.

You can't drill a ball to reduce cracking or else all balls would be drilled to reduce cracking . .

Well there are some things you can do to reduce cracking but it involves trade offs people won't always accept like always drilling more than an inch way from the pin or never using inserts.  Not a driller myself but have a feeling for some people having the perfect layout is more important than worrying about cracking.  Especially the people on here that get comped balls pretty regularly anyway.

True.  Perfect layout is an illusion too.  I don't even measure mine unless I'm going for a specific layout I rarely use or haven't used.  If I'm shooting for 65 x 5 x 50 and end up at 68 x 4 7/8 x 53, the difference amounts to zero effect.  Now if I'm drilling for someone else I lay it out and nail it exactly just to cover my ass, but I use a little more common sense when it comes to my own stuff.

Funny you mention that Luke. Since i started drilling my own stuff i never actually draw full lines for layouts. I've learned what has worked and i don't worry about small differences as surface is the biggest factor

Well like I say my drilling knowledge is pretty limited (to pin up and pin down) and I do really trust my PSO and so far none of my balls have cracked.  Maybe by putting finger hole somewhat close to pin (still more than between finger holes) if it does crack it will be small crack that won't ruin ball.  Not sure but I know the guy knows his stuff (does PWBA stuff).  Good to learn on here so I actually do pay attention when you guys mention stuff.  Thanks again as usual.
