Title: Urethane Adjustments- HELP!!!
Post by: Helluvahobbybowler on August 16, 2017, 09:58:01 AM
Goo Morning.  I've been forced to use an old 1984 Black Faball Hammer in some houses that always seem to have torched lanes even on the "fresh".  However if I start with the Urethane I normally have some difficulty making adjustments.  I tend to have to stand about 5-10 boards further right with my feet around 20 and play straight up 9 or 10.  On those torched conditions, that's money for about 2 games.  When the ball starts to check early, my normal reaction would be to move left.  However, I can't swing the ball at all because I'll whiff the head pin.  If I stay at the angle it'll go through the nose and if I swing a little, it won't come back.  What's the adjustment with urethane?  Help please

Have you tried applying surface on the ball?

Move right and use the carrydown that you created.

Believe it or not, stay where you are at and throw harder. You may even need to move right a bit more since there will be carry down, as mentioned. This should get the ball to not read the fronts. The rest of the lane should play about the same once you get the ball through.

Other ideas to consider are loft and more forward roll.

The problem with changing the surface is you will affect the good roll you have for games 1 and 2.  But it is worth a try.

Not to suggest throwing money at the problem but game 3 maybe could use a pearl urethane instead.  Back in the Faball days people would go to the red or blue pearl hammer in that case (or maybe even to the Pink).  My Red Razor is also good getting through the heads but would be too much ball in that type of house (20 yo ball too strong lol).

I use two different methods, but both are effective, depending on the conditions.

I do have one of the older pearlized hammers, the red pearl version. If my black hammer is checking early, I will try it out. With enough backends, I can usually move right just a bit with it, and use the dry spot I created to create the ball motion I need.

If there isn't enough backend for the red pearl, I will do exactly what someone else mentioned, and amp up my ball speed enough to hold the line longer and keep it in the pocket with speed.

Using speed to get urethane through the early burn can be tough, and is sometimes a trip to tenpin city, especially with a bit of carrydown. For me though, I'm usually far enough to the outside of the lane to help create some angle.

Great thank you.  Move to the right with eyes, feet, or both?

Tiny little parallel moves with eyes and feet. Half a board or a board at a time. You will need to dial in the details as you throw a few and see what kind of results you get.

What happens if you move in toward  4th arrow with mild pearl resin

Old school bowling baby !!!!!!!! Call me jaded.  Using urethane, the best bowlers had to know how to manufacture ball reaction by changing hand positions, speed adjustments, ect.  You could not just go to your mega-roller bag and grab another ball.

Try one or more of the following in no particular order:
1.) More speed
2.) Less hand / change hand position
3.) Move up/back in 6" increments on approach
4.) Parallel moves 1/2 to 1 board at a time. Try to catch the unused head oil if its there.

Good luck.  Bowling with urethane will really teach you how to make the ball do what you want.  You don't have big mega-cores and reactive covers to help you.

Enjoy !!! It's a lot of fun.  Just understand that you are not going to carry lik you do with resin.  Today, for most mortals, urethane is about control and staying out of trouble.  Shoot spares and know when 190 is a good score.

>You don't have big mega-cores

My AMF Sumo would like to have a word.  Urethane bowling is a blast and a great way to practice.  Wish I wasn't so speed dominant bowling on new synthetics so I could use them more for league.
