Title: How far do you go to bowl league?
Post by: Juggernaut on February 04, 2018, 08:24:01 AM
My job/working hours don’t allow me to bowl at the “local” center anymore, and I ended up finding a league at a center 75 miles away that bowls at a time that I can bowl, so I drive 75 miles, one way, and 75 miles home every week to bowl.

I used to bowl much closer, but they are a small, “rural” place, and don’t offer leagues at times I’m off work. I work Sunday thru Thursday, from 10:00p.m. to 7:00a.m.

I drive 150 miles a week, 32 weeks a year, to bowl one league.

 How about you guys?

Thankfully, for now, I live in a town with 2 decent centers within 5 miles, and the.closer one 2.5 miles away is a very decently run house. Right now, bowling would entail me to go to the center right after work (I work 50 miles away for now) and I would do that if a job opened up closer to home, but to bowl right after work and not see my kids a whole day would not be worth it. Weekend, maybe. But my kids are still little enough to be excited when I come home, and I know that doesn't last forever, so I'm going to milk every day I can for what it's worth.

But 75 miles? That's dedication. Only center I would bowl in far away is 40 miles away and I would have to have nothing else to do or hit the lottery lol.

1320 ft. For me. Good thing too, I get off work at 5:30 and have to be at the lanes at 6:00
Not to mention I go home from work and clean up and change clothes.

Older retired man, now passed away, lived here in the 1950’s, and started bowling at the small center here.

Later, they moved to a large city, where he went to work for GM. But, he drove here every Thursday to bowl with his friends, about 80 miles one way at least, and he did that for nearly 40 YEARS!

I live, quite literally, within a mile or so of the local center, but in a small town of 15,000 people, there are only about 4 leagues a week, NO day shift leagues, and NO weekend leagues for adults.
If I want to bowl in a league, my options are VERY limited.  :(

Juggernaut, I'm sure you're an intelligent man, but that is a bad decision.

 Oh yea, I know.

I don’t play golf, fish, or do many other “normal” things either.

I bowl. That’s the one thing I’ve always set aside for me.

I’ve been a dad, a father, a worker, a provider, and I’ve always been dedicated to my family, and they’ve always come first.

But bowling has always been my dream, my escape, my “one thing” I did for me. I got good, love the game, and just can’t see myself ever not bowling. At least not while I am still physically able to do so.

I must say, you are dedicated to your bowling endeavor. I drive 40+ miles R/T twice a  week. Not happy about it, but I don't drive @ night so that is a good thing. Happy bowling to you. PS. Like reading here that family comes first, as it should.  :) Love(d) being a family man and took a sabbatical while raising my young,  but retired now  ;D and have been bowling since the start of the 60's. I do love bowling. It's something that I look forward to with friends and acquaintances most times.  8)

I get it totally.  I only have a five minute drive to Sunday league because of being in middle of metro area but bowling eats up an awful lot of my lunch hours (hard with family and crowds to bowl at night).  Worse addictions to have than bowling.  Exercise alone makes it somewhat healthy.

42 miles one way.... But I love the center and I love the people I bowl with more then the center I bowl in that's less than 10 miles away

Right now I bowl two leagues and both centers are about 15 miles from my house. These are about 20 minute commutes.

I bowled in a travel league for several years and had about a 30 mile commute to one house but that was only once every 6 weeks, most were within 20 minutes.

At this point I would have to think long and hard before I would commute 75 miles one way.

We had a really good classic scratch league that had a couple of out of town teams that commuted around 80 miles one way. But unfortunately that league folded several years ago.

Monday league is about 12 miles.  Tuesday is about 7.

17 miles.  Three houses are closer but even the closest is about 7 miles. It’s the place I like the best of the ones that are in reasonable distance.

I drive a hour one way to bowl in a league in a different city, state.  Its a big league and worth it as my father also bowls in it.  Sometimes driving that far gets pretty old, but worth it in the long run.

According to google maps it's 1.9 miles.  However, there are at least 10 traffic lights on my route and I hit red on just about every single one...

40 miles from work to the center, but only 11 miles back home.  I have maybe 5 legit centers closer to my work, but have been bowling where I am at for a very long time... plus I used to manage it.

Am thinking of changing though.  Hate the thought of having to use an OG Purple Rhino Pro (16 out to 8 ) just to stay in the pocket.

4 miles one way.  Bowl both leagues there.

One of the advantages of living in Metro Detroit is that there are plenty of bowling centers and leagues. None are very far away. I bowl 3 nights a week and my farthest drive is 4 miles each way right now.

Also, tournaments and sweepers? They are very easy to find here on most any night or weekend thanks to Brian Regan.

I drive 33 miles RT to bowl at Kenmore Lanes.  Been doing this for the last 15 years.  There's a place a bit closer, but I prefer Kenmore and the "bowlers atmosphere" there.

1.5 miles, love it!

It's an old house with bad, old wood lanes, machines from the 80's, but I'm just happy that it's still open and I have a few leagues that I can still join when I retire in a few years (if the center is still around in a few years).  The owners want to renovate but the lease is short, 5 years leases, and they don't want to invest thousands and thousands of dollars just to lose the lease.  Hopefully the greedy property management will allow them a long term lease so they can upgrade.

5 miles now, but in the mid 70"s it was 145 miles round trip from work in Campti, LA to Bossier City, LA back to Natchitoches, LA where I lived.  I made the trip once a week and bowled in the early and late leagues for about 3 years before a new center was built in Natchitoches.  --  JohnP

Yea, that’s a pretty good drive. Back when I was still delivering groceries, Monday was my Louisiana day. Coming from east Texas on I-20, I went through Shreveport and Bossier City to get to my first delivery in Doyline. Then went to Hall Summit, Campti, and then to Natchitoches. Did the Wardworth grocery and the French Market there before going on to Winfield, Ruston, and spent the night in West Monroe.

Wow never spent much time in east Texas/Louisana but sounds almost as BFE as west Texas which sadly have had to drive through too many times.  Hell or High Water is a documentary.  Still both have their advantages I suppose.  Cost of living, lots of parking, no road rage, etc.

Now, it is less than 5 miles round trip.  Only bowling center within 75 miles.  When I worked in Michigan, my longest drive to league was from Selfridge ANGB to some center in Waterford (can't remember the name of it now).

When were you running that route?  I worked at the Western Kraft (later Willamette Industries, even later Weyerhaeuser) paper mill in Campti 1974 - 1980.  --  JohnP
