Title: Question about "hitting the pocket" and "Brooklyn strikes"...
Post by: Hamburglar on February 23, 2004, 10:58:27 PM
I've read on here many times of guys complaining about folks who can't hit the pocket on a consistent basis but are still able to carry the "Brooklyn" strikes and score well.  To the "good bowlers", the guys who hit the pocket 99% of the time, I know this has got to be frustrating to watch.

Anyway, here is the question that I pose in regards to this...IF, for some reason one night, every time you hit the pocket you only cleared nine off the deck leaving a solid 8 or 9 or 10 pin.  You try making adjustments, but in the process, you happen to "overhook" and go "Brooklyn", and blow all the pins into the pit.  Next ball, you go "Brooklyn" again...another 10 in the pit.

Now, at this point, KNOWING that the "solid" pocket hit is leaving one standing...do you then "resort" to going for "Brooklyn" on your strike ball?

My opinion on the matter is a STRIKE is a STRIKE whether you hit the pocket solid, go Brooklyn, or get the "domino effect" from a 3-6 hit.  What's your opinion???

In practice I get mad about Brooklyn strikes, but in but when the score matters I agree with you a strike is a strike.

I've lined up to play brooklyn after leaving too many splits.  I think the gripe lies with those who are all over the place unintentionally, yet get lucky and carry everything - brooklyn, light pocket, throught the beak, etc...  THAT'S what drives me nuts - especially if I'm in the pocket leaving the back row.

If you can knock them all down, do it.

I don't care how ugly a strike is, I turn to the other team with a smile on my face and say your dam right I'm gonna take it, I meant to do it that way.

One day I was on practice and I wanted to watch my score in 3 games, fist game 18x, second 18x I was leaving solid 10's everywhere, on the third game I've got a brooklyn strike and keep on it and got 246... talk about that.. To this day I still don't understand WTF was happening...

To add to 9andaWiggle's point, it is especially frustrating when you see someone carrying a ton of Brooklyns and celebrating like they are god's gift to bowling.

I am as guilty, if not more, as anyone when it comes to tugging or getting lucky with pin action on a bad hit.  I sure as heck don't jump up and down and celebrate when the pins bounce my way though.

People often carry Brooklyns (we call them Jerseys around here) because when they miss to the inside, they sometimes get more axis rotation and/or tilt, which helps kick the pins around.  If they were to start aiming for the Brooklyn pocket, they would either miss even further inside, or not have the same ball roll they had when they were aiming for the "proper" pocket, and threw the ball badly.

At least, that is my observation, based on what I see others do.  Of course, I never miss the correct pocket.

So no, I would not start aiming for the wrong pocket.

I have never lined up to hit cross over strikes intentionally. Sometimes you make a bad shot or adjustment or the conditions such a minefield that it happens.

For one I feel you can leave to many weird things. With the ball moving away from the 5 pin unless you hit high flush the carry is iffy at best. And what if you line up that way and then pull the ball you can leave some ugly spares and bad counts.

You take them and they count but no good bowler wants to throw a cross over when they are aiming for the correct pocket.

I can releate to this a lot. I remember when I put about 5 or 6 in a row that were all brooklyns.

AT this one house if i hit pocket I always leave crap. Then I started shootin brooklyn and i got better carry, so I just kept going brooklyn.

A strike is a strike.

Had to deal with this very thing last night.  First game, one of my oponents is all over the place.  Brooklyn, high pocket, light pocket.  Maybe 2 good shots the entire game and shoots 268.  Very frustrating.  Next 2 games were 17? and 15?.  Point is, if you keep making bad shots, the luck WILL run out.

When I was in college, our coach used to drill us - "if you're gonna pull the ball, pull it 3 boards" - of course back then, a 3 board miss was huge, and would generally result in a crossover brooklyn strike. But it was far better to miss that much than miss 1 board and leave a 4-6.

I've told this story before on here, but here goes again.
A friend of mine was bowling the semi finals in a large tournament group. It was around midnight, and the lanes were fried, and she was tired. She got lined up on the 1-3 pocket on one lane, but couldn't keep the ball on the right side of the headpin on the other lane. She got lined up brooklyn, and threw 11 in a row - 1-3 pocket on one side, 1-2 on the other.
Amazing.

I for one thank the pin gods when I carry brooklyn, go back, and quietly sit down, counting my blessings. After all - even if I complain, the rules say I have to take the pinfall.

that's my uncle..thinks he is god's gift to bowling. I have seen him carry the worst crap imaginable, while I in turn will leave a solid pocket 7-10. Go figure...my only saving grace?

Watching time after time hit the pocket and get shafted each and every time and hear the cuss words start flying. 3 weeks ago he started with the first 7, yes 7, brooklyn. I was about ready to quit if he kept it up for all 12. 8th ball...actually hit the pocket...7-10...YIPEEE!!!!! Next shot..pocket....4-9...YIPPEE!!(ball did not look high from my point), last shot....pocket...10 pin...and of course he missed it...I forget what his game was...but I know I beat him.

Brooklyn doesn't like me at all...but then again neither does th 1-3 sometimes.

so as I was saying...carry all the crap you want, but when you hit the pocket and get screwed(if you are one of those god's gift guys)...I am gonna thouroghly enjoy it.

I dont post that much, i am more of a reader, but i couldnt help replying to this one. I will be the first to tell you that i am inconsistant. there are some days where i cant hit the pocket worth jack. it either goes too wide, or hits jersey. as much as i love the jersey strikes (just so i can laugh at those that doubted), i cant stand getting the 5-8 pins left over. all the pins just shuffle to the left and dont take those 2 with them. frustration. but hey, if the board shows it as a strike, then i will take it. u dont score any less.

i am so smart, s-m-r-t!

I bowl in a league with one of those guys now who thinks he threw a great shot when he gets a brooklyn.  When he throws a weak pocket shot and leaves a flat ten he gets mad - he was robbed.

I used to be in a league in the hard rubber days with a teammate who couldn't stand it when an opponent got a nose dive or brooklyn.  He prided himself on hitting the hole and thought any strike anywhere else shouldn't count.  One night a couple of our opponents started getting strange strikes and Harold started getting madder, and madder as they celebrated beating us.  After three of their guys got brooklyns second frame of the third game with the attendant celebrating, Harold got up, put on his street shoes, and left the building leaving his equipment behind.  We never saw Harold again - he was done with bowling for good

oddly enough....in brooklyn (and most of nyc) they call that shot jersey for obvious reasons.  now that I live in michigan, I find it odd that its called brooklyn and not chicago or wisconsin, or something.  The most amusing thing to me is that most of the people calling it brooklyn, have never been there or dont even know where it is, for crying out loud.......and honestly, I ALWAYS try for the 1-3 pocket, and rarely do I miss, even when not carrying, never intentionally crossing over, never.....I dont believe any serious bowler would ever do that, it makes no sense.

I remember this one house that is now gone there was a pair of lanes where the 3 or 6 pin were slightly off spot.  Almost impossible to strike if you were a righty. Lefties scored big on the pair.  Then one day somone started to shoot brooklyn as a righty and started to carry.  All the righties started to do that on the one lane and after that they decided it was time to fix the pin setter.

I guess the lefties lost out on the advantage there
