The VGB OR VIRTUAL GRAVITY BLACKOUT. Gets down the lane very clean and makes the corner

Pattern A:

Ball 1.  Out of box VGB had to be left and go after it. Lane play was 20 to 5 and watch her backend. Very clean through the front and very distant roll and turn to break point. This pattern could be played from 12 to 2 and hold the line for speed players with higher rev rate. I backed off the revs and went to a more forward roll with success. Easily able to control the lane transition.

Typical house moves on a higher volume than most places.  High scores and Big angles.

Pattern B:

This pattern was longer and higher volume. Play was from the inside on fresh or far right. With no surface adjustment had to be spot in to carry. No room for error. As the pattern transitioned, area opened, it became easier and easier to play this particular pattern. Waited a few games for break down and the moves were to the right with feet and line.

Play the line not the angle

NOTE A:  When playing the fresh on higher ball keep lines tight from the inside or play straighter from the right.

NOTE B: Start with something like the Optimum Idol out of box and open the lane up. You won’t regret what comes next with being able to use the VGB more and more without having to be perfect.

LOW DOWN: The VIRTUAL GRAVITY BLACKOUT is a ball that stronger rev players will often wait on for transitions or straighter players can start with medium speed and rev rate. You can lightly break the shine and get the VGB moving earlier to smooth out the angle for stronger players.

Normally i excel with Symmetrical balls but this ASYM pearl surprised and made its way in the bag. Plus the all black makes you pay attention to it all the way down the lane to read it.

56998 - Roto Grip / The Optimum IDOL REAL DEAL Review

Wait for it! OPTIMUM IDOL. The color and roll of this ball will appease all.

Patterns used for review are HP modified.

Pattern A: 41Ft, 26.52 Mls, 7:1 ratio

Pattern B: 43Ft, 29.86 Mls, 4:1 ratio

COMMENTS

PLAY

The OPTIMUM IDOL is all that and exactly as expected. Controllable, big hitting power, mid and down lane read/hook and easy to move around on different patterns and lines of play.

Pattern A:

Ball 1.  Out of box the OPTIMUM IDOL stayed true to roll. Read the mid lane and revved up enough to keep the motion from being too early towards the end of the pattern. Easy to play out to friction as pattern transitioned after moves left to follow field of play. Able to shift back to original targeting line 12-7 and ply 12 to 2 with slight hand change to get around field of play from the right.

Ball 2: Polished up the OPTIMUM IDOL gave the length and backend one would expect and want. Still able to control the motion while keeping energy down lane. Easily able to back off the tweener line and play straighter with slight hand position change.

Typical house moves on a higher volume than most places.  High scores and Big angles.

Pattern B:

This pattern being a longer than pattern and with a hang spots and lower scoring index actually showed the strength in the mid-lane of the ball for both OB 2000 and polished versions.

NOTE A:  When playing the fresh the higher scoring angle with polished was from the outside with a soft release. As pattern transition it became a slow fall back from the outside.

NOTE B: When playing the fresh with OB surface the OPTIMUM IDOL liked tighter inside but could be used with tweener angles playing the to catch the field down lane using urethane. The real key here is as the transition from 5 other bowlers (High/MID Revs) easily allowed for right migration on the patten with swinging into the mid-lane with controlled strong recovery.

LOW DOWN: The OPTIMUM IDOL is a ball everyone can use as a benchmark/upper move from urethane, transition ball and just fine tune to for your preference. Whether you want OB, polished or somewhere in between you can get the look, roll or motion you want with good hitting power. NOTE. Polished OI will rev up when ball surface track breaks down and your line of play has more friction from lane play. If house friction right> Just move left and swing if you like revs.

I prefer polished for general league play.

Ball Specs: Optimum Idol
Coverstock: Micro Trax Solid Coverstock, 2000 Abralon Finish
Core: Symmetric Weight block

Review:
The Idol line has been the definition of consistency dating back to the original pink Idol. The Optimum Idol continues that greatness. The Ikon core alone is going to draw people to this ball. The Ikon core will draw people to the latest iteration of the Idol line. What is going to keep people throwing this ball is the performance they are going to see on the lane.  This ball is the perfect first ball out of your bag. With a smooth strong reaction, you are going to be able to judge the lanes very quickly and easily when throwing this ball. Besides the great reaction you are going to see with this ball it really stands out when going down the lane due to the vibrant purple that really stands out. This ball is going to be as close to the original Idol that you will find, make sure you get out and get yours today!

I’m a huge fan of the Widow line and the 3.0 does not disappoint. This is a benchmark to stronger benchmark type ball that can be used on a variety of lane conditions and it has a lot of shape down lane for me for a solid ball. Most stronger solids burn up on me on medium oil and I can only throw them on heavy volume. The Widow 3.0 retains energy and shape even if it’s not sport pattern kind of volumes. Out of the box the comments were on how early and smooth the 3.0 was on the lane. It struck quite a bit. As it lane shined it became longer and a lot more angular but still strikes quite a bit. The 3.0 is a great compliment to the Widow 2.0 Hybrid for times where you need something with a bit more teeth in the oil.

Ball Specs: DNA Coild
Coverstock: EXO Pearl Coverstock
Fragrance: Orange Pineapple Slush
Core: Asymmetric
Finish: Reacta Gloss

Review:
Talk about a ball that stands out. The new DNA Coil is another addition to the DNA line. This being a pearl coverstock pairs perfectly with the original DNA. The DNA Coil is great for when you start to see your DNA burning up and losing energy. Unlike many pearls, the DNA Coil isn’t just a one-trick pony. You won’t just see a big backend motion like every other pearl bowling ball out there. The thing that I really like about this ball is the versatility. This ball can play a variety of angles and lines and still see a great reaction all over the lane. I find myself using this ball a lot during the start of league or when the lanes begin to change at tournaments. With the bigger core it allows me to use this ball early in league. The coverstock is also very good when changing the finish. I have thrown the ball at box finish and have taken it to 2000 sanded and have had success adding additional versatility to this great ball. If you loved your original DNA you are going to really enjoy throwing this ball, make sure you pick yours up today!

Roto Grip Attention Star Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

Over the last several years, there have been a ton of great products come out of the factory in Utah and we can add the Attention Star to that list.  This is one of the newest additions to the HP4 line at Roto Grip and it’s been extremely impressive so far.  The core comes from previous international releases (Momentous Core) along with upgraded A.I. technology to give us an engine we haven’t seen here in the U.S.  On the outside, it’s wrapped with the eTrax Pus Pearl coverstock, and needless to say, I’m impressed.

With a low RG (2.48) and higher diff (.049), those numbers tell me this ball is going to be strong but it’s also never going to miss “the spot” down-lane.  I’ve drilled one so far and really like it.  It’s mapped out as 5.5 x 5 x 2.  This puts the pin above my bridge with a small shift of the CG and the mass bias just to the right of my thumb.  I haven’t made any surface adjustments to it and have had a lot of success with it right out of the box.  The Attention Star has been a house shot beast and when I’ve had the chance to get on tougher conditions, when I need to open my angles and create shape, the Attention Star is the first one I go to.

If you need a pearl, asymmetric ball that not only looks good, but strikes a ton, the Attention Star should be the next ball you drill!

Storm Summit Peak Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

One of the newest additions to the Master line at Storm is the Summit Peak.  After drilling a few of the original Summit’s and having success with it, I was excited to see the brains in Utah create a pearl version.  Not only does the Summit Peak smell like Apple Pie, but it rolls great too.  Using the pearl TX-23 coverstock and the A.I. core technology, the Summit Peak has been extremely successful on multiple surfaces from multiple angles.

I’ve drilled one so far and really like it.  It’s mapped out as 6 x 4.5 x 2.  This puts the pin above my middle finger with a good-sized shift of the CG.  I’ve left the surface alone since, for me, the goal for the Peak is to be a ball to use after my Eternity-Pi, Gem, or Absolute Power start to see the front of the lane too much and I need something to fly through the front but still pick up the mid-lane and run over the 8-pin.

No doubt about it, this ball is strong, so you could probably get away with drilling it a little weaker than expected.  The response time is quick and this ball has been really good on multiple occasions.  It compliments the line extremely well and I look forward to having more success with it.

43294 - Storm / DNA Coil Review
« Last post by addynyr on March 23, 2024, 08:29:05 PM »
Layout: 4 1/2 x 6 x 0
Surface: 2000 abralon

The DNA Coil brings back the supercoil core paired with the new exo pearl coverstock.  The supercoil core is one of the strongest ones in the current storm lineup.  Originally found on the DNA solid, the core is designed for heavy oil and produces strong and smoother motion.  The new Coil gives a cleaner and higher response for that same heavy oil.

I drilled this one 4 1/2 x 6 x 0 to put the pin on my axis line to start up on the lane very quickly while giving that more angular motion I have needed.  This layout was used specifically for tournament conditions that have a lot more volume then the typical house shot.  The Coil accomplishes just what I am looking for.   It reads the front and midlane pretty strong while giving a nice angular backend.  The strong core and coverstock combination handles the heavy oil really well and is a great step down from a slower response ball such as the original DNA or summit.  I brought the surface down to 2000 grit because the factory reacta gloss was too long in length at first.   The surface allows the ball to read the midlane stronger and continue better.

On the typical house shot the early hooked forces me into the oil very quickly but still continues well.  If your house shot has a lot of volume or is longer in length then the Coil with a similar drilling would do well.  A more typical drilling where the pin is further from the axis line would be great as either a fresh ball or first transition ball.  This ball is earlier and smoother than the virtual Energy Blackout.
