Ball: 15lbs 3 oz, pin: 3 1/4", starting top weight:  3 oz

Drill: 5" x 4", pin - directly between finger holes, 2 3/4" above the midline.
CG - approximately 3 1/2" to the right & 1/2" below grip center
no weight hole
I use finger & thumb inserts; so, drilling removes 2 - 2.25 oz top weight

Bowler: tweener
Revs: 250-300 rpm
PAP: 5" x 0"
Axis tilt: 20 degrees, 10.5” track diameter
Axis of rotation: 45-60 degrees
Ball speed: 16 -17 mph.

Lanes & Oil:
1.   Brunswick AnvilLanes with light oil creating a medium condition.
2.   Old AMF wood lanes (desperately needing replacement by synthetics),
new oil machine: medium to medium heavy condition when first oiled,
can deteriorate to burnt heads and midlane with out of bounds, from 1-10
board by 2nd shift league. 1st shift usually gets a medium oil condition.

Comparison Balls:
1.   Lanemasters Absolute Power (AP). The only drilling difference is the pin is
just below the center of the bridge. Surface was lightly polished
2.   Legends New Standard (NS): I put a light coat of Legends polish on this ball,
as I rarely see enough oil to use it in its stock surface. Drilling is closer
to a 3”x5”, though and that can be significant.
3.   Columbia Messenger Ti B/S/P: Exact same drilling, stock surface.

The Masterpiece (MP), with its stock surface and drilled as specified, needs true medium oil or longer medium-light oil to be used well.  On medium oil the MP is slightly earlier than the AP with slightly more backend and, slightly more hitting power. The MP has about the same length as the polished NS, but about 2-3 more boards of backend. Given the greater backend, I was surprised that I still had the great sense of control that I have with my NS.

I stand 1 1/2 - 2 boards deeper with the MP than the AP; it hooks about 2-3 feet earlier and has 2 boards more hook. I'm sure it handles 1/2 - 1 full degree more oil than the Absolute Power. (If we define a “degree” of oil as going up one level from light to medium-light, medium-light to medium, or medium to medium heavy.) Given that both are considered resin pearls, they handle an amazing amount of oil.

The Messenger, by comparison, a great medium-light oil ball, went far too long on the medium oil pattern; it went about 48+ feet before making its turn. I had to shift my feet 5-7 boards further outside and play further out into the dry. It was less controllable on this condition.

Next I tried the MP on the 2nd shift league in the old wood house. We had dry heads and some out of bounds. In the 1st shift league, I had been playing the MP between 2nd and 3rd arrow out to oil line, around the 6/7 board at about 42/44 feet. I couldn't do that at all. So I tried between 3rd and 4th arrow. Even the midlane was too dry for the MP! That shocked me. The AP was much cleaner through the heads.

Thanks to Legends for the test ball.

Addendum: I can tell from re-reading this review that it doesn't seem to express my enthusiasm for using this ball. I regard the Absolute Power and New Standard as 2 of the hardest hitting balls I have owned. Both have a sense of control, no matter how much they hook or how little. I have been very happy when I face the right oil conditions that allow me to use either one. The Masterpiece virtually replaces both of these, in my view, while hitting harder (if that is possible), being almost more controllable no matter how much backend it has, and being even more friendly to release changes.

I can easily see sanding this one fine, about 1500/2000 grit and re-polishing and getting another one and leaving it at 1000 or 1200 grit for medium heavy oil. I can't even imagine getting rid of my New Standard; yet the above just occurred to me.

About the ball: 15 lbs., 3oz. 3 inch pin with a topweight of 3 1/8 oz.

Drill: label (pin to right of ring finger, cg about 1/2 inch from mid-line. There is no balance hole.

Me: I don't have information on rev rate or axis tilt. Righty. Throw about 15 mph (speed as calculated by Qubica at the pin deck). stroker style who can play inside a little by changing speeds and wrist positions.

Lanes: Older wooden lanes. 39 foot house shot, oob from 5 board out, clean backends.

First Impressions: For starters,  the packaging of the ball is quite impressive. Included with the ball is a ball see-saw, ball cup, 2 oz polish, 2oz cleaner, 2 scuff pads for surface adjustments, some promotional brochures and a ball drilling guide. Also included was a DVD featuring Fred Borden, Sam Baca, Ken Yokobosky and Bill Hoffman. The DVD was about the quality of the materials that go into each ball as well as some information about the dynamics of pin placements, cores, etc. A nice little extra.

Practice: Started off in practice (rent a lane) this past Sunday, throwing about 6 games with it. Ball was in out-of-box condition, which was surprisingly not as highly polished as I thought it would be. Ball rolled very well and had a strong arc to the pocket playing a down and in (10 - 6) shot to the pocket. Ball was hitting very hard.  Last game was able move inside with it (28 - 5) and get back to the hole with plenty of energy retention. Was pretty satisfied with it overall, but was wondering how much effect a thumb hole change I made (moved the hole 1/8 inch right to alleviate a rubbing problem with my thumb from previous equipment) was having on my shot. Polished the ball on the spinner when I got home from practice, so now I have no read on how it will react next time I throw it.

League last night: Wasn't sure I was going to throw it in league, as I'm always hesitant to go with a new ball after only 6 games on it, especially after altering the surface the previous day. I was carrying with me a Roto-grip RS-1, Lane#1 Tsunami and a Storm Paradigm, so I had some rather attractive options to go to. But the strong hit I saw on Sunday, combined with the light polishing I gave the ball got the best of my curiousity. The ball was an absolute monster going down the lane for the down and in shot, crushing the rack with one of the most predicatable rolls I have ever seen (better than my Tsunami, which I love)! The first few shots, my teammates didn't think the ball was coming back to the pocket (I can hear them back there saying "hook, hook!"). After that, there was nothing for them to worry about. The great thing is that while other on my team had to move during the 3 games, I was able to play the same line all night long), and much like any ball that can retain energy, the drive through the pin deck was strong and continuous (including the two 9 pins I had, lol).

After league (which was 258-246-223-727), I threw a game from the inside line, and there was plenty of scoring to be done. Again a strong, predictable roll and great energy retention.

This ball can be best thought of as a bench mark ball for medium conditions. Drilling my ball label gives me the versatility I need to play in or out, thanks to the strong resin coverstock of this ball. Surface adjustments, although I haven't tried them yet, should allow you to stay in the game on oilier or drier conditions. This is a hard hitting ball! You may a a 9 pin every once in a while. This is one of those "first ball out of the bag" balls that many bowlers are looking for.

A word about the cleaner and polish that come with the ball. The odor is strong on the cleaner(which they do warn you about). They work very well, but if you can use them in a ventilated area, please do so.

This is my first Legends\LaneMaster purchase (thanks Iketown300). While I usually don't see enough oil for their stronger particle coverstocks, I hope to get my hands on more of their equipment in the future.

I am a tweener 320 rpm 17 mph I drilled this ball stacked leverage 1" hole on pap.
I have put over 100 games on this ball,no track,no change in ball reaction,no kidding!!
the ball works best for me on medium amounts of oil and clean to small amounts of carry down, the ball's reaction is very forgiving and smooth I like to call it a rolling ball that flips.
ball is very receptive to speed and release adjustments, but it never becomes over under or"touchy".
legends has created a sweet package with this ball, I give it a 10 out of 10

See my profile for my stats

The masterpiece happens to be a great ball when you are playing up the boards. It gets good length and has a nice smooth predictable arc(as all lane masters stuff does) off the breakpoint.

Drilled: Pin next to ring finger CG kicked on to my PAP w/ Big Hole on PAP for a little sooner reaction

Likes: On a sport condition where there is some oil on the outside this ball because a killer. It will generate some area for you even on a hard shot. It is very predictable and has excellent hit and carry.

Dislikes: Left of fifteen this ball just isn't the right choice. It loses the great reaction it has when you get inside and hits a little weak inside.

Thoughts about the ball: This ball is definitely a great ball to have in your bag. If you hit an outside shot it will kill it. I recommend drilling it weaker as I feel I drilled mine a little too strong. The people on my team with one who have it drilled weaker tend to like it a lot more. If you are a big cranker I would say stay away from this ball as Legends/Lanemasters has some other equipment that will match up much better for you. Players with less hand will probably love this ball. They will have a much better chance at keeping it outside all day and really see the true beauty of this ball.

--------------------
I feel that Legends/Lanemasters is really making the best equipment out there and especially if you are trying to find stuff for the tougher conditions.  There balls are predictable and keep the pins low creating excellent carry. Also there balls do not seem to ever lose there hit like some balls from bigger companies do after so many games.

If you have any questions about Legends/Lanemasters Equipment feel free to PM me

I had never tried a lane masters ball when I purchased this one for $159. I need a polished ball to get to a hard track just past the rangefinders at around the 6 board. Got it drilled with max backend, and I wasn't disappointed at all! I'm a 194 bowler, who doesn't adjust too well with my feet. Out of the box finish I shot 181, 187, 189 my first week with the Masterpiece. I tried not to get disheartened by this, so I figured out the small details. The next Thursday winter night I came out and shot 247, 257, 268 for my personal best 772! This ball hurts the the pins like a carpet bomb! Keep the polish heavy and this ball will never cease to amaze me. Let it go and you'll be staring down the ugliest splits imaginable!

                       Go Lane Masters!!!!

Got ball drilled on June 14, 2007 by Mike Miller at Ten Pins and More in Rio Rancho, NM. Before drilling ball was 15lbs. 2oz. with 2.75 oz of TW and a 3.125" Pin. Ball was drilled with the Pin above and right of the ring finger with the CG kicked out right with a weight hole utilizing a 4 1/2 x 4 lay-out. This ball is absolutely amazing, I didn't think it was going to be so aggressive on my typical house pattern(38" buffed to 45" synthetic using CONTROL oil)then I was expecting, it really digs in and transitions hard into the pocket. In it's current condition (OOB-Polished)it is currently about 5 boards stronger than my Storm Domination(which this ball was supposed to replace, but it's too strong).  I was able to play a very similar line compared to my Legends - Black Pearl(OOB-3.0" pin above and right of ring finger with a similar lay-out). It is currently about 3 boards less than my Big Band and about 5 boards less than my NS2.  After throwing 6 games with it last night on a fresh pattern , I was able to throw 6 more games on a pair that was used by league earlier and the balls reaction was very conducive on both patterns.  I got to throw 6 more games today on fresh oil from last night and the ball was absolutely amazing.  I don't know what else to say about the Legends/Lanemasters line of balls, other than the pin reaction is much livelier and messengers come from all over the place. There is nothing else out there that even compares to these balls.

Excellent ball from Legends/Lanemasters!
