10 Year Layoff
« on: June 03, 2018, 10:30:33 AM »
Happy Sunday Ballers!

Back to bowling after a 10 year layoff due to kids and military service, last 2 balls I purchased and used to successfully carrry a 192 average USBC was the Total NV, Scorching Inferno.   Need help don’t even know where to start for new equipment, high speed medium axis tilt medium revs prefer to play straighter but if need need can get deeper.  Loved the Total NV, been digging the Motiv look.

If your older equipment still fits, why don't you start out with those to regain your timing?  Later, you can talk to experienced bowlers in your center to find out what is working best there or you will figure out what you need to round out your arsenal based on your personal experiences.

There will always be someone around here or there that will be happy to recommend their own personal favorite balls.

I would ask around and try to find a good pro shop and get your grip and span checked.  After 10 years a lot could have changed.  As mentioned try your old stuff if you would like but get your grip checked by a professional.  Get it done the right way.  Then I would look into finding a coach to help you.  Often bowlers try to be helpful but really they are not.  And remember to have fun!!

Great suggestions so far here. There's a lot of good equipment on the market right now. Once you've had your fit checked, chat with a local PSO about how the local lanes play and how that correlates to your specific game, then grab a new shiny piece.

If your PSO doesn't watch you bowl and get you PAP before recommending equipment and wanting to put holes in something, go elsewhere. Disclaimer - do talk with them though if they are coming off that way as maybe your have a major fit change from your old stuff and it would due everyone best to get the measurements off a properly fitting ball. In that case a middle of the road piece to build out from. If you're interesed in Motiv, you won't find many who will shy you way from getting Venom Shock.

One more thing.  Do some investigating on what ball or ball company you might want. You might go to a Pro Shop who might try to cell you something that they have in stock and are trying to get rid of.  Depending on the area where you live some ball companies might not be popular.  for example I like Motiv stuff and in many areas they might not be in stock.   They can order what you want or what the pro shop might think best for you.  Have fun in getting back!!

+1 on the Venom Shock if go Motiv route.  Also unlike say 10 to 15 years ago all the major balls companies have good pieces these days and a true dud for everyone is rare.  Welcome back.
Here today.  Gone tomorrow.

That's not necessarily a bad thing as it could end up cheaper if they're really trying to get rid of some inventory.

Like some above have said, the biggest thing coming back is fit and timing. Balls from 10 years ago may not fit properly. It's even recommended by some to have your grip checked every couple of years

Keep it simple.  Most balls on the market are good on the typical house patterns.

Remember when the ball finds adequate friction it will travel in the direction of it's rotation. If you're not getting movement then play closer to the friction.  Have fun.
