anyone working out, lifting?

I've decided to change my life style and get back into shape and to return/train in Martial Arts again. But, I'm getting itchy for (heavy) weight lifting which I did decades ago. I'll be doing yoga as well..

How bad, or good, does weight lifting effect bowling physical game? Does anyone have experience to share?

(Lately, I'd rather go to the gym than to the bowling alley which is in the same parking lot.)

It is always a good idea to devote time to your health. This will improve your game, too, as if you suffer from fatigue at all during a long set of games, this will improve your conditioning and endurance for bowling.

I was getting winded bowling one night against vacant. We had 3 bowlers and the pace was fast and I lost my breath...that was one of the turning points....

I workout 6 or 7 days a week. A mix of Orange Theory (4x) and traditional meathead lifting (2-3x). Hasn't adversely affected my bowling, however I can't say there's a significant improvement either. What I can say is I feel things. That early turn, swing getting too far away from my body is much easier to feel now that I am more In tune with my body. I will say, your eating better be in check. That dogshit food served at bowling alleys? Definitely cut that out.

Well after three weeks of working out - cardo to heavy weights, I've dropped several sticks. My focus has improved, but I'm seeing many ringing tens and solid 9's. My speed is up, but I also find myself muscling some shots. I really have to focus on my breathing and getting to relax my bowling arm and resting the ball on my left non bowling hand when I'm on the approach.

I'm not stopping my visits to the gym that's for sure, even if my bowling game suffers a bit. I gain no benefits from bowling besides it's a hobby I enjoy.

I ended the winter season at 204, and before the summer league started I set a goal to be 220 for more than have the summer season. I did it, highest at 224. It wasn't the average that was important, it was the goal I set and reached.

And yes, the bowling alley food are slow killers.... except this one private house in downtown sac, they have a good menu hahahaha

I have been working out pretty much all my young adult life to the present time.  The endurance I have when working out and bowling is what I see for my game, being able to focus and playing a sport plays hand in hand in working out.  A couple things I use to help my bowling while working out.  I will pick a focal point when doing a set and try my best never to take my eyes off that focal point while breathing as normal as possible.  The other thing I work on is grip pressure on my fingers and keeping my thumb as flat as possible.  Doing this helps me grab with my fingers and not with my thumb.  Overall I think working out is great when participating in any physical sport.

At 70 with shot knees, I do a complete upper body workout twice a week. on bowling nights I use hi-end knee braces and take an anti-inflammatory with an analgesic.

I am pushing 70, too. I had to start using knee braces when I was in my late 50s.
I have worked out all my life, mostly weight lifting which I still do, but not nearly with the heavy weights I used to lift. Now, I focus more on light- to -moderate cardio and some weight lifting to stay in some semblance of shape, concentrating on the legs.
On bowling days, I do not work out at all. The only "exercise" I do on those days is
lifting my bags from the trunk and lugging them into the bowling center. I avoid doing any pre-bowling stretches, knee bends, or any other warm up exercises. I simply start by rolling the ball down the lane.  This is the routine that works best for me.

So far, working out hasn't have any negative effect with my bowling. Bowling the same which is a good sign.

It's good to see folks here on br of all ages working out. Working in the medical field and seeing many sick ppl in the hospital or in chronic settings like dialysis sucks. I don't wish these on anyone. Many of these patients have "regrets" or "I wish" factors. I don't feel sorry for them.....

I dont feel sorry people who make themselves sick, no matter if its cigarettes, the western diet (heavy fast food/sugary drinks) or the like. You reap what you sew.

This past winter, i wanted to get into better shape. I lost 40 lbs in the first 6-7 weeks. It affected my game tremendously. I was hurling the ball (unintentionally), my timing was off, and things were uncontrollable. I started league, having second high avg. of 203, and I ended at 178. Needless to say I've struggled. Since then, i've picked up some weights, and worked on my timing - I'm back up to 200. All that to say, like others mentioned - be conscious of your flexibility, but also keep an eye out for your timing.

https://stronglifts.com/  I am stronger now then I was in my 20's & 30's I am now 58

I squat 310# bench 225# and over head press 125#. I followed the app to the letter and built strength and muscle no bulk, this program is fast and fun each day, check out the app for your phone they have a free version  Between this and running I have lost 40+ lbs. the older you get it is hard to lose weight and build muscle. Helped my bowling a lot I never get tried have ton of energy now.

Check it out it is easy to follow and you never are sore if you follow the program.

I swear by it and many of my friends are now doing it

I do several programs to keep it "fresh". I do programs from Athlean-X, DDP yoga (Diamond Dallas Page yoga), HIIT workouts I customize w/ exercises I hate most, boxing, and kata's and kumite drills (no the the hopping like an idiot point sparring lol).

Also, I complete 122 push ups a day until Christmas. This is more of a mental, motivation drill for myself. See how far I will push myself.

Just like bowling, we need strong mental conditioning to do Nutrition and Training...plus, patience.
